Re: A life of sensory deprivation [Re: exoskeletal]

i've done quite a bit of dark retreat meditation which is basically to sit in a totally dark room

it's sensory deprivation, at least for seeing, and sometimes i use appropriate sounds or just enjoy the relative silence

and from my experiences i found that the same stages happen as john c lily noted on his tank experiences

anyway, i feel that these experiences sort of re-wired my brain in a way, they were very powerful compared to ordinary meditation or even drugs

in tibet and elsewhere monks go in for good until they have some sort of realization, could be months or years

i just do it during night time

the effect it had on my mind was one of losing interest in most of what has arisen out of human thought, if you can believe this

in the darkness there was nothing for my mind to grasp on to except what was in it already or could be created and projected into the darkness

so i would think of something, like an idea, and it would just arise and disappear back into space

none of them had any meaning, they were like mirages

and it really did a weird number on my ego, i feel more like an animal without a developed human personality most of the time

in the sense that, if someone by way of conversation said "so what do you do?" it hits me the same way it would hit a deer, i.e., nothing comes up

well i forage through the forest, run from scary sounds, roam around...

in other words, no answer comes into my mind to say "oh i do this and that, i just LOVE doing this but i don't like doing that..."

my mind became more like a vacuum or space or the void, i had that kind of realization through it, but it left me functioning for a while like a sort of autistic saint
