Anyone's mycobag experiences would be wonderful to hear about, I know no one who has done this before and don't know what to expect.

Nooooo noo nooo.... That's not what I meant; Maybe I need to reiterate my question. I am more interested in the product itself and its inherent possibilities, NOT "Mycobag" the company. Sorry for the confusion..

my experience w/mycobags tested my patience badly, took over a month to fully colonize, then i cased the mycelium in the bags, seemed like it took forever to get mycelium showing thru on the casings. One bag is still colonizing and its been almost two months!!! I like them because they are presterilized and premixed and stealth mode, but i think im gonna stick with jars and pf tek from now on

My experience with mycobags led me to try the WBS tek and then casing. REALLY tries your patience, especially when you get a shit-bag. Must have been a bad bag cuz it got contams.

Mycobags and religion are for weak minded individuals. Make your own shit. It's better to be self sufficient. Safer tambien!

MycoBags have always been offered as an introduction to fungal culturing. Some people have found them to be such to their liking that they continue to use them, even after gaining the initial experience in cultivation of fungi. There are many many people out there that would never have attempted any type of fungal culturing if it wasn't for the apparent ease of the pre-sterilized MycoBag design.

On top of that, they make WONDERFUL small edible, gourmet and medicinal mushroom kits. Working from culture is the way to go with bags!

There are some tips you can take heed of to enhance your MycoBag experience. This includes:

1. Watch your incubation temps. There is much more substrate mass and nutrient in your typical MycoBag than in your WBS or BFR jars. If your incubation temps aren't close to being spot on, then your growth will slow or stall.

2. Break up the substrate material so it is no longer a solid "block." Many bags will arrive broken up after shipping, which is good, however sometimes they come just like they did from the factory, rock solid and hard. Break those up a bit and your mycelium will have a much easier time expanding.

3. Use more innoculum. Sometimes you just need a little more juicy juice to get things going. Remember there is a lot more substrate in these bags than you think, and while you might be able to get away with 1cc per BFR jar, there is more than 5x the nutrient value and 3x volume of material in the bags, so adjust accordingly with your incolum.

I know this really isn't a "sharing experience." But to share a little, we CONSTANTLY have MycoBags going in our Office producing a wide variety of edibles and medicinals. Right now we have Black Poplar and Reishi Mushrooms in our chamber! They are great for the "set it and forget it" crowd. I give these away to family and friends and they love it, sort of like your first Chia Pet.

Lol! True -- mycobags are good for people who don't want to take the time and effort to make their own substrate. This is fine -- not everyone in the world will want to when you can just order a presterilized bag and shoot it up.

Making substrate isn't difficult, though. 2 lbs. of brown rice is like 79 c and this will get you one to two pounds of dry mushrooms. That's like over a year's supply.

The bags people sell are too tiny, too. I mean jesus -- I can fit like 3 lbs. of dry rice in each bag after it's been cooked. This is like 4 quarts of substrate in each bag....

Again, bags are good for someone who just wants mushrooms and isn't interested in the hobby, but if you're interested in it, especially if you're growing gormets, too (like me,) it's a lot better to save the money and grow your own stuff.

I found the MMGG to be so easy, why bother with these bags? I never had one so I wouldn't know, but I know that i succeeded with a minimal amount of knowledge and effort, just following the MMGG.

What some people people forget to realize:

1. Bags are floppy, plastic jars.
2. Pressure cookers are expensive too.
3. Bags come sterile.
4. Bags stay sterile so you can look at 'em more as they grow than most jars.
5. You can fill your own bags. If you have an (expensive) PC.
6. There ARE large bags.
7. Bags take a long time to colonize because they have a lb of substrate.
8. Since you can crush your substrate through the bag, spreading the mycelia, some mycobags will colonize faster than brf cakes.
9. Mycobags can be used as their own terrarium.
10. Mycobag substrate is more potent than brf.

Mycobags are great. They will test your patience, however they sure work pretty damn well if you ask me. Here are some pics of my first one. I am currently hoping for a 4th flush and it looks pretty good. I see pins starting to grow.

If you risk contaminating your jars by looking at them you are doing something wrong.

I DON'T contaminate my jars by looking at them...

because

I can handle my bags all I want, and leave them in the open air.

No contaminations yet.
