Re: Why do all my homegrown mushrooms suck... [Re: PrimalSoup]

^^ so I have 4 quarts of PE that are growing myc nice, fast, and healthy. If I break up the myc and spawn to bulk, then fruit and take the usual good care like I do, then I SHOULD have decent potency PE, right?

if these PE come out weak like the others...im done with cubes and MS.

Awww Bill, you didn't get the message?  It takes three full eights to really trip on shrooms. Even if your friend has to shove them down your throat while you are puking... you won't break through with only one or two eights, you need that third one. Its a well known fact.

Seriously though, you are basically using a grow kit if you don't make your sub or cook your grains. If you have a pressure cooker and an oven, do it yourself. It would help, as others have said, to learn agar too...its not that hard.

I'm pretty sure there are no mushroom superlabs that "dealer mushrooms" come from or anything...they are homegrown to someone, somewhere, who did their homework.

Your psychedelic superiority complex might also contribute, the volume is a little loud at times.

Whatever it is... I hope you figure it out soon and grow some extra potent mushrooms, and extract some amazing D, and have some great epiphanies about life. We can always use more of those.

Some ppl like to eat a few, wait and eat some more and wait. You can't do that, they need to be eaten within 15-20 min all one shot

He has said he powders then caps them, so i would assume he takes them all at once.

Seriously Bill, do agar. Agar is your friend. Agar for experts. Agar gooooood. :yesnod::thumbup:

I find it surprising, and doubtful, that RR would claim it's just one factor. Please find his quote on the matter ASAP. Thanks.

This subject has been written on extensively. The search feature here is your friend. Potency is genetic. Build your substrates with the food fungi needs, and leave the potency to the mycelium.

Agreed. Like many growers, at one time I set out in the search of the perfect substrate. The tryptamine/phan threads have been around for a long time, so of course I also included a few substrate materials high in those, such as seaweed. Then, N became the all important nutrient. I tried horse manure, chicken manure, cow manure, worm castings, etc., and the results were always the same. Extremely potent mushrooms came from good isolates whether it was on plain straw, or horse manure or compost. It didn't matter if coffee was added, or worm castings, anything. At the same time, performance from multispore inoculations were all over the scale every grow.

I've honestly never found a substrate additive that increases potency. If one is out there, it's yet to be found.
RR

...and one more...

RogerRabbit said:
The most important factor for potency is genetics. With multi-spore inoculation, it's a roll of the dice. BRF cakes are more nutritious than any other method, by the way. If anyone doubts that, try making a 1/2 pint horse manure cake and see what happens.

Substrates such as horse/cow manure, and coir, worm castings, straw, etc., are bulk substates, which means they need to be used in large amounts to be of much benefit. They can greatly expand the size of your crop when you spawn brf cakes or grains into ten to twenty times as much straw, but they don't impact potency. If there was a single substrate that would make your mushies more potent, don't you think the experienced growers would be pointing you to it?

We recommend horse manure because it has a good texture and can be used by itself with excellent results. The same holds true for straw. Coir and worm castings benefit from the addition of a bit of vermiculite to break them up and coffee grinds of course will help any substrate to perform better. However, they affect the size of the fruits and total yield, not potency.

If you want consistant potency, you'll want to learn strain isolation on agar so you can capture the specific genetics you want, and grow it time and time again, rather than depending on the roll of the dice with multispore inoculation.
RR

Someone already did the work for me, just passing it along.

I had 2 stages of growing. once was a couple years ago I grew like 4 or 5 batches and I tried some and they were weak. others did and they were weak.

fast forward to this stage. 3 or 4 batches deep and I have not yet tried any. I have given some away to my mom and her brother and they both ate an 8th and thought I tricked them into eating fake mushrooms. then there was this last kid who I gave like4-4.5 grams he said they were weak and it felt like they were from a kit or something.

Looking at your previous posted trays there does seem to be room for improvement, whether it will increase your potency I'm not sure.

First the trays themselves look pretty thin, I've experimented with different substrate depths and while you can totally do something crazy like 1/2in substrate, a good 4" substrate seems to produce much better (even compared to the ratio of material).
They are low and pointing in multiple directions.  This is a sign of one or two things, not enough directional light or the humidity above them isn't high enough and they are laying towards the humid air.

You can do whatever you want, but if I was about to break up 4 quarts I would put them in a deep tray or tub with enough bulk to give them 4".
Let colonize.
Then I would tent plastic wrap over the tray with a wire, so there's air flow but humidity traps.
Add 1 or 2 6500K CFLs as near the plastic as you feel comfortable.

im sure any mushrooms you see, theres going to be room for improvement. im not saying that because im not good at taking healthy criticism, but I feel like I could have posted a picture of absolutely 100% pefect mushrooms and you would still find some fault with them.

I could be wrong, though.

thanks for the feedback

Indeed and they don't look horrible, just that you clearly think you have a problem and there's only so many angles you have any control over.

To continue what I would do (especially with PE) I would take one of the first good looking fruits and take it to agar.
If it looked clear I would take a chunk of that agar to a spawn jar.
