Micropore tape lid filters 1

I hear alot of ppl saying micropore tape is a poor choice of filter material for grain jars and I would like to put that to rest.
The reason I started using mp tape was because I had sfds bite me in the ass pretty hard one time. At first I was getting a bad jar here n there and I was chalking it up to poor sterile practice but no matter how long I went over my process I couldn't see anything wrong. The problem of bad jars slowly got worse until one time I had 60 jars go bad on me, set me back a little bit to say the least.
So I decided to do a little test, I prepped some grain jars and just let them sit uninoculted. Sure shit, within a week I was seeing mold on the very top of the grains. I knew right then it was a lid filter issue.
So I decided to explore other options, what I really wanted was something readily available and cheap so I could use once, toss and replace with new. Micropore tape seemed like the best choice but I heard nothing but negative things about it. Well I'm a believe it when I see it type of person so I was going to try anyways.
Before I went balls to the walls with the tape I decided to prep some grain jars with mp tape filters and leave them uninoculated to see what happened. A week went by and no contams, I shook the jars like you would normally and let them sit for another week. Still clean, a month later still clean.
Well that was good enough results for me, it's been a year and a half now using tape and have had nothing but success with it. I use it on my grain jars, pasty plates and slants.
I place 3 pieces of tape over the hole before the pc cycle and then once they cool down, I remove the foil, wipe off any moisture on the lid with a paper towel and add a 4th piece. The reason I use the 4th piece after the pc cycle is just for precaution incase the tape degraded at all during the pc cycle. Here's some pics...

I'll give it a shot I too have also mostly seen negative things about micropore.
Do you know why your sfds failed ?
Do you ever have a problem with the tape becoming moist?

Kewl! Do you have an idea how many pc runs your sfd's lasted? I have a lot of sfd's that I ordered recently from the US but they're quite expensive to ship here, so if this works it's going to be sweet (and cheap).
Thanks for sharing

How were you securing your SFDs before you switched to micropore? Did you cut them yourself?

I ran with micropore for a while, but over time just ended up sticking SFDs on all my lids. No problem with either IME.
What kind/brand of micropore tape do you use? Looks like the "athletic tape" stuff? Whatever you do don't buy the "eyelash extension" micropore tape. It sticks super well and after a PC cycle can be impossible to remove all the leftover adhesive.
Also, I love your shelves man!

I'd be interested to see the results from a whole, uncut SFD used. Maybe a bad batch/supplier :\

Interesting. I used to use micropore for stuff back in the day. It's not without drawbacks but it doesn't deserve the bashing it gets either.

I just started using micropore and growth seems stronger compared to polyfill. It could be the switch from soft wheat to WBS, but so far so good, and way less of a hassle.

Are you talking about a whole uncut sfd secured with a ring and replacing the lid altogether? I'll give it a shot and see how it goes. Nothing to lose.
I'm making the transition from MP to SFDs right now. I used to wait for my jars in a SAB with three layers of MP. Only had one contam out of a few dozen jars but could very well have been my sterile technique
Obviously Pinpornproducer is using MP on a much larger scale and colonizes out in the open air. No contams? Dat shit cray

Hell yeah. I often wondered this but never knew why I didn't see more people just sticking a piece of tape on the lid and calling it a day. Preciate the post

I'm not sure how many cycles they lasted, I pc pretty often though. When your doing 50-60 jars at a time you can't just hope the filter discs are still good, and I don't have time to be wasting on testing them all the time.

I was using them whole under plastic lids.

Ive been experiencing contams in my spawn so thought maybe it was my technique, but somthing told me to hold up a strip of my MP tape to the light the other day only to find tiny holes allowing light through like swiss cheese. I mean I guess quality can vary roll to roll, but I personally am done with MP tape.. Converting over to SFDs.
Not saying MP tape doesn't work it's just not as promising IMO esp when wet.

How many layers do you use? This is kinda funny because that's how I felt about sfds

I used 2 layers. I should probably use 3-4 huh?
&& I thought SFDs don't get wet..

SFDs will get wet but they dry quickly and doesn't really matter if they're wet or not. .5 microns used to be the standard for sterilizing water back in the day before they switched to .22 microns which is the standard today I seriously doubt .3 microns would let much through The way PPP was using his SFDs is the reccomended way. But now I'm wondering if he may have had better luck fixing them under his lid with silicone?
I could very well be wrong though. Im just having trouble wrapping my head around this thread

I've been leaning against MP tape because of all the negativity, but it's soooo much cheaper for me. I think I'm going to follow your lead and leave some empty jars sit to confirm.
Btw, you setup looks very nice and neat.

The new sfds would work great for a while but woud eventually fail. Having 50-60 jars go bad out of nowhere is not something I want worry about. Fresh tape every cycle and I know I'm good.

When the MP gets wet i wipe it down with alcohol and it dries very quickly.

When MP gets wet I sketch out a bit and feel very uncomfortable about it for a little while. I may lose a little sleep here and there but I eventually forget about it before long

I'm sold.
Tagging this for the next grain run. I never tried either, was always scared from the horror stories.
Great post!
