these don't appear to be good very long-term use for syringes. I am in need of self-sealing ports that can withstand a whole bunch of punctures. The ports on micronmagick's myco-starters are a good example. they withstand ~50-60 punctures before I don't trust them anymore. myco starters run about 5 bux a pop too. I've had success using RTV silicone sealant but that is really only good for about 5 or six sticks. these that you guys are linking to don't seem to have a "long" enough chunk of rubber to push the needle through before it comes out the underside. correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to find a good solution.

those ones i linked are MADE for syringes. When you get a shot, for innoculation at the doctor, he draws a little bit of the serum out of this vial, with that rubber seal on top. Then, puts it back in the storage area (most times a fridge) for use on another patient. They routinely do this, because one vial can innoculate like 10 people. SO its self healing, and its made for a decent amount of punctures. This seal is DESIGNED for multiple punctures with a syringe needle.

Even if you puncture it 100 times, its still gonna seal air tight!, no germs are gonna get through that barrier. They're more likely to come from the polyfil seal.

Just get like 100 of them (~$8) and replace them every 10 batches. Thats more than enough maintenance. Its cheap, and easier than puncturing through a lid, or leaving the hole on the metal lids open to contams after innoculation. By far the best idea i've seen yet. I'm working on a more dependable idea for the filter on the lid, looking at vendors for certain parts that can be used with a filter disk type of setup.

The ports are designed for "serum" vials or bottles, under strict FDA guidlines & rules. Consiquently, you cannot get a better product, for the purpose. As serum ports are made to withstand repeated syringe needle punctures.

I have no idea of the spec's of MM's ports. Certainly, some are better than -- others. The bigger & better they are, the more money they cost. Some are rubber, ptfe/rubbe, rubber/silicone & some have a teflon lining.

I have differing kinds. As an example, here is a lid I made:


With a port similar to these: CLICK HERE

They work GREAT & will will withstand as many needle punctures, as any -- out there.

If you want to go past 50 or 60 injections, simply pop the port out & replace it with another. Simple as that & MUCH cheaper than buying another lid w/port already installed.

Certainly, any fiber filter can absorb a liquid solution from the container it is protecting. But, the bulk of the ones I designed are used for innoc of a WBS spawn jar. There is very little possibility of the filter wicking moisture from that, through it to open air. In fact, much less than using a normal filter type disk.

As for liquid culture solutions, as in MM style lid. It will not leak, but -- one cannot provide gas exchange through it. Unless you pierce it with a needle & actually inject air. Excepting, there is no outlet & pressure can build, inside the container.

To resolve that issue, I designed this little puppy:


Which has a 3 way valve ... 1 closed, 2; open to hepa grade filter & 3; open to injection or withdrawal via a syringe.

A tight fitting rubber grommet is placed into a hole drilled in the lid. Then this valve w/filter is inserted tightly in into the grommet. Resulting in an air/liquid tight lid, you can provide gas exchange to, close & agitated without getting the filter wet, and inject or withdraw from, controlled by the valve stem position.

There are still a few changes that can be made. One can simply cut tyvek into a small circle (about nickle coin sized), then place it over a rubber grommet, then force the groommet through a tight hole on the lid, from underneath. The grommet holds the tyvek in place on top, perminantly (or until you want to replace it).

what about this sixtango

If you took a 1 inch grommet, and a 1 inch tube, and cut the tube like 1/2 inch, and got a 1.5 inch piece of filter disk, and put it over the end of the tube, and forced it through the grommet, to create a removable, serviceable filter.
