Yes, you can become a multi-millionaire working a dead-end minimum wage job as a janitor.

Perhaps the only clue that Ronald Read, a Vermont gas station attendant and janitor who died last year at age 92, had been quietly amassing an $8 million fortune was his habit of reading the Wall Street Journal, his friends and family say.

It was not until last week that the residents of Brattleboro would discover Read's little secret. That's when the local library and hospital received the bulk of his estate, built up over the years with savvy stock picks."Investing and cutting wood, he was good at both of them," his lawyer Laurie Rowell said on Wednesday, noting that he read the Journal every day.

That couldn't happen today, that's the residue of the old America.

Sorry - but that's rather ignorant.

You could've easily accumulated millions trading any number of commodities or stocks at any point in the last 20 years.

Speculating in financial markets isn't the method of how this guy accumulated his wealth, he saved most of his disposable income and invested with a buy and hold mentality.

"You could've easily accumulated millions trading"

Same with going to a casino, most go home losers.

I have in laws who immigrated to this country, worked shitty jobs for years and are homeowners. One still works at fast food and owns 3 houses.

I dunno what the big deal is, the guy played the stock investment game. Anyone can play that and get rich if the invest properly. I thought the story was going to be about some janitor that saved every penny he earned and lived in a cardboard box to reduce expenses

He likely did save every penny he earned and lived below his means no one gets rich just saving though you need to put your money to work in the market.

When I read it in the paper one of his friends or whatever said the he was the type of guy who would park further away from his job so he didn't have to put change in the parking meter. If anything he was a cheap old bastard, but he worked hard so he definitely deserves respect.

Whats the point in saving all that money if you live just a standard get-by life style?

Okay so you have millions but youre still living in a shack and working as a janitor?  I dont get it

I understand the still working part, some people love to work.  But I wouldnt be living a life style as if I was poor anymore.

No point in working hard if you have nothing to show for it. Some people might say, "What do you mean, he didn't spend any of it!" Well, there are a lot of things that the term old school might make you think of, but a man born in the worst possible recent era would know how to live in his means.

I agree completely. I don't want money for money's sake. Money is so I can enjoy life. If I wasn't going to spend any of it, I might as well work far less.

I think that lump of money was his magnum opus. He probably left it to his family too. I wouldn't sit on something like that, especially without bonds and such, but he was probably pretty proud of himself. And I think a lot of people are for him, too.

They need to re-title this to:

"If you get lucky in the stock market, you'll be filthy rich"

The fact he was a janitor doesn't mean much other than he had a really weird hobby.

By the very nature of our economic system some of the people must be poor. Our system promotes the opposite of equality. It promotes the idea that some people should live excessively and gluttonously while 5 miles down the road, others  struggle to find their next meal.

I agree that the stock market and banks are fucked up, I get that. but when I see people who are struggling to find their next meal its ususally because they have an issue with motivation and getting their ass in gear to provide for themselves. you cant hardly blame all of econnomic hardship of people on our system. there is a point where personal responsiblity comes into play. and so many people are not willing to take the blame on to themselves. now I get there are exceptions like single moms whos husbands/babys daddys who are dead beats, some elderly, and special needs individuals. but any able body male should be able to figure something out. I went out one day in the winter cause I was bored and asked to shovel peoples roofs off and made several hunderd bucks. very hard work but thats a perfect example of what you can do.

Me personally? Or do you mean in general?

Because if you mean me, what I said previously doesn't determine my chance at being a millionaire.

Actually it does.

What I heard is if you had money you will spend it as soon as you get it.

Unless you're counting on winning the lottery or a rich dead aunt or uncle I don't see it happening.

People gotta learn to save their money

    #21259152 -

Well, you heard wrong.

What I said was

"Whats the point in saving all that money if you live just a standard get-by life style?"

Meaning why live just to ends meet when you can live at least a middle class life?

"Okay so you have millions but youre still living in a shack and working as a janitor?  I dont get it "

Meaning, why would you live in a shack if you dont have to?

"I understand the still working part, some people love to work.  But I wouldnt be living a life style as if I was poor anymore."

Meaning, why live poor if you arent.

It sounds to me like you're cheap.  I dont have to spend ALL of my money to live happily.  Can easily have an average job and not live poor.  To have a nice home and car does not mean I spend my money as soon as I get it.

I am cheap but I credit that to why I'm worth 6 figures in my mid twenties.

Wish I could be like that guy though I'd probably be worth twice as much.

I can't do it though I gotta party and blow money sometimes it's too much fun.

Being a hermit would suck

He was 92 years old, you just need to invest $300 every month during 65 years at an average return per year of 8.25% which is easily doable with dividend paying mutual funds and you will make exactly $8,120,286.73 !!!! The key is to start early, compound interest "works" with time

No luck in here... just consistency, frugality, etc...
