Don't take this personally but the book you got your information from "Living with the Dead" by Rock Sckully is trash. It's full of lie's including the bit about the pill press.
Sorry,it was the only dead book my crappy library had (I'm lucky I found that one).I'll try to pick up that Long Strange Trip one,I haven't been into the Dead for all that long.My point is,everything came together in the psychedelic movement in the late sixties,it seemed like everybody knew everybody. And I just wanted to point out the Dead's involvment with Owsley.

No need to apoligize my friend it's Rocks fault not your's. I too got the book when it first came out. And yes Owsley was very, very closer to the band. You could say he was part of the band since he helped design the early sound system and gave them so much financial support. Even after he became a artist he was still part of the scene. He would set up at the Greenpiece table at each show and sell his jewelry and belt buckles. I got to talk to him several time and he is very eccentric, but the guy is a legend and it was a privalage to be in his company. I feel honored to own one of his buckles.
Some of the stuff in Rocks book is true like them all living together and living on steak and owsley's acid. But ya get Mcknally's book it's the real deal.

What I meant was that alot of what goes on in the lot is absolute bullshit. There are alot of people there ready to rip you off. Not everyone of course, but alot of the kids that walk around and whisper shit as you pass are either feds or someone selling bullshit.

That was 70's and 80's. The US sends about 16 Billion to Columbia every year to eradicate cocoa plants. The US also sends billions to Afganistan to eradicate poppy fields.

Is there anything near the equivalent now? EDM doesnt really seem to have much of a message, but it would be nice if someone could harness those 100k crowds with edm that had more meaning behind the music

Did you actually just revive a 15 year old thread (that hasn't had a post in 12+ years) just to make a shitpost about Rick James?
Welcome to The Shroomery. You'll fit right in here.

Not AFAIK. Jam bands still exist, and some have a psychedelic following. But not quite like the dead did. Likewise, there are a number of popular modern groups that have a pretty big following among psychonauts, but I really don't think we've had anything quite like the dead...
