The Dead Summer Getaway 2003!

Let?s make this thread the official Dead summer tour thread. Here, fans of the band can add facts, rumours, dates, opinions, etc. relating to the summer 2003 Dead tour. And hopefully after these shows happen, people will post their personal experiences from shows they attended.
Today The Dead announced part of their summer tour. There are two legs to this tour and they announced dates for most of the 1st leg.
June 15th-- Bonnaroo Music Festival, Manchester, TN
June 17th-- TBA
June 18th-- TBA
June 20th-- Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY
June 21st-- The Meadows, Hartford, CT
June 22nd-- Tweeter Center @ Great Woods, Mansfield, MA
June 24th-- PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ
June 25th-- PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ
June 27th-- Tweeter Waterfront, Camden, NJ
June 28th-- Tweeter Waterfront, Camden, NJ
June 29th-- Vernon Downs Raceway Vernon, NY
July 1st-- Summerfest, Milwaukee, WI
July 2nd-- UMB Bank Pavilion, St. Louis, MO
July 4th-- Willie Nelson?s Picnic, Austin, TX
July 6th-- TBA
July 7th-- TBA
July 8th-- TBA
The second leg, July 29th-August 10th has yet to be announced.
Apparently Joan Osbourne is now in the band. Interesting.
I?m keeping my fingers crossed that they will play Alpine or Deer Creek. But I imagine they?ll be covering mostly the west coast for their second leg. Either way, The Dead is going to make this summer great for me. I?m sure many long, strange trips await me.

Yeah Bonnaroo is in the list I posted but I put in the wrong date. I put down June 25th when really it's June 15th. I edited my original post so now it's correct.

july 6th-8th must be deer creek. the dead and phish were both confirmed for seperate three day runs at deer creek about a month ago, and the 6th-8th was originally thought to be the phish dates... so it would only make sense...

I didn't know that. If they play three nights at Deer Creek, I will without a doubt go to all three shows. I love Deer Creek.

Call me crazy, but when you lose your lead singer, you should stop playing music. I cant stand Journeys new front man, who do they have singing for the dead?

You think just because Jerry died, all the other band members should stop playing music? The remaining members are all very talented and have an incredible passion for the music they play. There is also a large following that has a great passion for the music they play. Why should they stop? Jerry was great but the Grateful Dead phenomenon was not just about him. The band is happy. The fans are happy. Why not keep playing? And to answer your question, most of the band members sing. Lesh sings way more than he did with Grateful Dead. The new lead guitarist, Jimmy Herring sings. The keyboardist Rob Barraco sings. Even Hart sings a little.

Steve Winwood will open seven dates on the first leg of the tour, beginning on June 17 (location TBA). In the summer of 1994, Winwood opened ten shows for the Grateful Dead when an incarnation of Traffic briefly reunited (the line-up also featured original member Jim Capaldi). Willie Nelson will perform at six Getaway shows, with moe. making an additional appearance at the June 29th gig at Vernon Downs Raceway in Vernon, NY.

Although it's much further from me than Deer Creek, three nights at Red Rocks would be awesome. I've never been to Red Rocks so this might be the summer to do so.

Yes, the sad truth is that Deer Creek is now called The Verizon Wireless Music Center. It's up to us heads to keep the original name alive.
So is anyone here going to Bonnaroo? I wish I was but I don't have a ticket and I'm taking summer school so I can graduate. I'll go to the Summerfest show for sure since it's so close to home. I'd drop out of school to see them play three nights at Red Rocks, lol.

Excuse my ignorance but what exactly does TBA mean? It'd be awesome if they played Red Rocks, the acoustics there are amazing and the right bands with the right lights can put an amazing light show on on those cliffs.

To Be Announced=TBA
Red Rocks is my favorite venue probably. They had alot of problems with us and thats why the Band didn't play there during the 90's
Hopefully these problem are resolved ,but I doubt it.

Road trip time, wow it's been a long time!
I'll be going to the two shows in Camden and NJ at least!
No NYC dates as of yet, maybe Madison Square Garden or Jones Beach will be added, I hope!
I have spent my life seeking all that's still unsung. Bent my ear to hear the tune, and closed my eyes to see. When there was no strings to play, you played to me.

I just opened this week's Onion and saw a huge steal your face logo (advertising the Summerfest show) that covered half the page staring back at me. It made me smile seeing that. But do they really need to spend that much on advertising for this show? I would guess it's gonna sell out either way. Marcus Ampitheatre isn't that big. But anyways I'll be going to that show for sure. And I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that July 6-8 is either Deer Creek or Red Rocks!
And I heard from a reliable source that they will hit up Alpine for their second leg after playing the Northeast Bonnaroo in NY.

Well they just announced more dates. Here they are:
June 18th-- Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD July 30th-- St. Pete Times Forum, Tampa, FL Aug. 2nd-- Route 66 Raceway, Joliet, IL (Chicago) Aug. 3rd-- Float Rite Amphitheater, Somerset,WI Aug. 5th-- Deer Creek, Indianapolis, IN Aug. 6th-- Polaris Amphitheater, Columbus, OH Aug. 8th-- Darien Lakes PAC, Darien Center, NY
June 17th, July 6th-8th, July 29th, July 31st and Aug. 9th-10th are TBA
This is looking pretty good to me. I'll probably go to Route 66 in IL, Float Rite Ampitheater in WI and Deer Creek in IN because they are all close to home. What a great summer this will be.

Someone said, and I cant find the post, that Milwaukee would be swimming at the show. Do you really think so? I cant stand the Summerfest "Police" always being like...Nazis...And stuff. I would imagine they'd clamp down so hard on The Dead show since SummerFest is all "family oriented". But I dunno, I just moved down here. Heh, I was just at last years for a bit....

rosewoodpete, great link! That looks promising. I wonder why the Dead haven't added those dates to their official tour announcement.
Madtowntripper: Expect a mixed audience at the Summerfest Dead show. Also expect a lot of drunks. I'm sure Milwaukee will be swimming, but swimming in a sea of drunkeness. It'll be a good show but the audience might not be as deadicated as the audience for the Somerset, WI show for example. I'm basing this on when I saw Phil & Friends last year at Summerfest. Sure there were a lot of heads but there were also a lot of people that couldn't care less about the band and were just there to drink.

Festivals are fun but they are nothing like seeing a band in a down sized, historic, breath takingly bueatiful site like the Red Rocks. One night in a hay field or 3 in the star lit sky's of the rocky mountains? hmmmm...
I'll be at both myself but it's a no brainer if you only want to see the Dead.

Easier said than done man. Tickets have been sold out for a while and I'd much rather see three shows at Red Rocks than see them once at a huge festival.
Update: They just announced another date in their tour--
June 17th-- Verizon Wireless Amp. Virginia Beach, VA

I should sell my bonnaroo ticket, I have to see if I score these tickets and my Phish tickets, if I get lucky and get them all, I'll probably bail on travelling out east this summer.

Adom are you gonna try for the mail order or are you gonna go through Dead ticketing when they go on sale on 4/28? I'm gonna have to do the latter because they accept credit cards unlike with the mail order option. I hope I get these tickets!

I want to mail order because I have a slow connection which is no good for a hot ticket like these, I was going to send off for mail order today but I only have enough for one seat(each night). I don't know what I'm doing for sure yet, if I can gather the cash for two seats each night before mail order is ended I will be doing that. I guess I'll have to see how things go and let them fall in place.

I sent off for my tix for 7/7 and 7/8 yesterday to GDTSTOO. I like using GDTSTOO because if gives me a much better chance and i don't have to dick with a clogged internet site. i couold only afford two days so I'll miss the first of the three nights.

Did you send out for a total of three tickets or six tickets? I'd maybe be interested in buying three pairs from you at face value if I don't get them through Dead ticketing tomorrow.

Just one seat for each night. And of course it would be face value, but I would probably hold onto them untill June incase I found away to make it.

Here's another update to the Dead's touring schedule:
Aug. 9th-10th-- Bonnaroo NE, Riverhead, NY
I don't think I'll be able to make it to this one but that show is looking pretty great. I can't believe the lineup. Looks like they won't be making it to Alpine this summer. But I'm going to Red Rocks so I can't complain.

Nice Adom! Aside from July 7 and 8 I might also try to go to Somerset on Aug 3. We'll have to meet up for sure at Red Rocks. I haven't decided who I'm taking with me yet since I got two pairs of tickets. Do you know where you're gonna camp at all? I have to start looking into that.
I CAN'T WAIT FOR RED ROCKS!!!!

Us old farts like to camp at the Marriot West. After a night at Red Rocks my spine needs a bed.
In 87 they let us camp in the lot. It was great. I can guarentee that they won't be allowing that this time around. They didn't let the Dead come back because of that. The had never had a concert before were it was over and the fans didn't leave. Other bands they would play and then it would be over and people would finally leave after awhile. It didn't dawn on them that with the Dead playing 3 nights we would make there parking lot are home.

I wish we could camp in the lot. That would be perfect. I'm sure I can find a place to camp nearby if I do a little research. Anyways, they just announced their last two dates for the summer tour. This should make people in the southeast happy:
July 29th-- Office Depot Center, Sunrise (Ft Laud), FL July 31st-- Hi Fi Buys Amphitheater, Atlanta, GA

Yep!!! About 3 miles from my house is the Office depot Arena in beautiful Sunrise Florida. The Dead, Bob Dylan and His Band and special guest star, Robert Hunter!!! How much luckier can a man get that has never seen the Dead, Grateful or any other, plus Dylan> With Robert Hunter to boot. I'm psyched.
7/29 at 6 PM, tickets go on sale tomorrow morning at 10AM. Bet ya there'll be a line! At least I don't have to deal with Ticketmaster.

Wow! Ive never been to a concert before, but Im already going to get tickets for Phish and The Dead coming to GA.
Can anyone tell me what to expect? I mainly wanna go for the good vibes , the thought of a bunch of people sharing similiar feelings all together and listening to music just puts a smile on my face!
I'm also curious as to what to expect as far as the Age group, the type of people that generaly go, the experience, etc.
Is it something cool for all ages really?

You're in store for a really good time. Overall, expect good vibes at both shows, especially the Dead. You'll find that there are a lot more younger people at the Phish show. I'd say the average age is somewhere in the early 20s. Of course there are alwaysmuch older people that attend Phish shows but they are few and far between. As for the Dead, expect more of a mixed age group. There'll be lots of people new to the scene and lots of elders that have been there since the beginning. Get to both shows early because the parking lot will be booming with people socializing, selling stuff and just hanging out. I hope your first concert experience is a good one. Be sure to post about your first Dead experience in this thread! I'll be interested in hearing about it.

Ticketbastard sells tickets in sections of the venue or alotments of general admission in attempt to reduce scalpers and scamers. It is a good idea to check every day untill the show if you really want to go, that is how I scored Phish tickets this past Febuary for the show in Denver 4 days before showtime.

I'm definitly camping unless I can't find a spot. I still don't know who is going with me and I didn't expect this problem, I need the $$ for the ticket so I can get my camping space, or I have to wait for next weekend and risk them selling out.

Adom, I'm in the same exact position as you. I want to reserve a space at Chief Hosa but I don't know who I'm going with yet. And I need to get money for the tickets, from whoever decides to go with me, so that I have money to reserve a space to camp. I hope camping spots don't fill up too quickly.

wow, i just spotted this thread. i will be at all 3 red rocks shows. a group of us from another similar web board are meeting to party those days away. we will be "camping" at a friend's mountain house near red rocks. i would love to meet any of you in the lot and/or before/after shows. we always try to get in the upper lot, from the entrance to red rocks just west of morrison.
you can NOT camp in red rocks lot. they start booting people shortly after the show and they aren't real nice about it. chief hosa will fill to overflowing if it's not already completely reserved. your best bet for -comfort- is non-hosa or a hotel. if you want to party the days and nights away, chief hosa may be the place for you. hope to see some of you at the shows!!!

Nice 5 nites at Red Rocks with a day off in the middle. It just keeps getting sweeter. Glad I don't work or I'd have to quit. Anybody wanting these shows get em while there available. This is going to be the best concert series since Jerry died.

Im going the milwaukee show.. (July 1st)
I'll prolly get there by bus, because it's not THAT far away from where I live. Should I buy tickets in advance ? The lawn seats are like 20 bucks.
I'm gonna try to see Phish at Alpine Valley on the 19th of july, but Im going on vacation to the canadian boundry waters from the 12th to 19th so I might be late and too tired to go... a friend is working there and said he could let me in free, so i guess i'll see whats all happening then.

You havn't been to Red Rocks have you? Just wait you'll see what i'm talking about, you'll like it a lot. At least it's not a 12 night run at Madison Square garden in Manhatten that we had to endure in the earlly 90's.

No, I've been to RR before....I know from reading your posts that your life style has slowed down...but mine definitely hasn't. three nights at RR will be hard enough on ole pete's body and brain, a week just might put me back several grade levels. i didn't mean it wouldn't be fun. i just don't have the self control i need and i would go wild.

At the time it seemed like it. I was staying in the luxerious parking garage across the street. It was interesting but very draining. 13 days in a parking garage in NY is roughing it. Of course I would be willing to go to Bagdad for a show if Jerry was playing. Especially now.
Ripple- not to worry keeper of the flame, my love is still true. I was refering to staying in one venue for awhile.

I plan on going to the show at the PNC bank arts center in NJ. The show seems to be starting fairly late, 5pm?? whats a good time to show up, what time is good, i dont want to get there too late. I want to be able to show up and socialize before the show, but not too early that theres no one there. That would be bad

Ripple-I tripped on shrooms (4 grams) during the Dead and they rocked. The setlist was:
Set 1: Touch of Grey > Jam > Fire on the Mountain > Sugaree > Friend of the Devil > Alabama Getaway > Viola Lee Blues
Set 2: Box of Rain > Black Muddy River > Sugar Magnolia > Sunshine Day Dream > Unbroken Chain > Space > Drums > Dark Star > China Doll > Dark Star > St. Stephen > High Green > The Eleven > I Know You Rider, E: Attics of My Life
They absolutely rocked. The crowd went nuts for Touch of Grey with an incomparable energy. Space blew a whole lot of minds, mine included. What can I say?-every song was amazing.
Nearly every song had personal significance:
Touch of Grey was my first favorite Dead song.
Friend of the Devil is my best friend's favorite Dead song
Alabama Getaway-I was watching a video of it every day for the previous 2 weeks.
Viola Lee Blues was the first song that a friend from school introduced me to.
Box of Rain is one of my top 3 favs, and I told a friend before the show that I really wanted to see that.
Black Muddy River-one of my favs
Sugar Magnolia-A girl who I met and hung out with there told me earlier that this was her fav Dead song.
Dark Star-I also said I NEEDED to see this.
...and the rest are just songs that I really like.
There were such good vibes the whole time, and it seemed like the band was really motivated. Phil was great-you could see his bravery (taking over the role as leader, it seemed), especially as he sang "Unbroken Chain" (you see the significance). Jerry's presence was felt, of course, but the band used that to their advantage. It was so positive!! I need a recording!
It was the best trip of my life-everything came together. I thought so clearly and saw the face of god:) !!!!

I wish I would of saved my Trip for the Dead but I ate boomers for the Allman Brothers and tripped right into thru Panic, I have along summer ahead of me I have to keep my head on. I wanted to eat some of those Fractals that are everywhere but I will save them for a later date. Anyways I finally got that trip at a show I've been waiting for, I'll never look at live music the same, the things they do with the stage/audience... I dunno but WOW! ...Fucking Beautiful
I see now why people rage so much for the Dead, I've seen alot of wanna be's and imitators in the last 4-5 years and now I am finally starting to relise the signifcant impact these guys have made on this planet. I could just look up on stage at Phil, Bob, Mickey or Bill and imagine those wonderful people playing to a crowd of acid crazed heads with Jerry and Pig back on the Haight or the Fillmore or what ever, They really transcend Something. I look forward to seeing them again with more focus. It was a long festival and I was very drained by the time the Dead came on despite that they kept me very entertained and perked up but I really just need to see more shows.
Mickey sings Fire on the Mountain
Joan sings Sugeree

Adom - Sounds good. I'll know as early as tomorrow but maybe not for 2 or 3 days whether I'll have those extras. I could give them to you in person at Red Rocks, or I could mail them, but I think the former might be easier if we exchange cell phone numbers beforehand. I'll let you know.

Thinking about skipping it. Just head to St.Louis>Red Rocks>Oregon Country Fair. Then pick up on the second leg in the midwest and ride it up to NY.
Whats the scene like at Summerfest? I'm going to assume that there's a shitload of cops since there's so much else going on besides the Dead. Got any details KC?

Hope you guys had better luck than me. Got bunked, kept the guy in site, (big guy with a goatee and bonaroo shirt up by the railing at the top of the lawn) went after him to at least get my $$ back, ended up getting escorted out. Got to see a bit of Willie though but not The Dead. I was a bit upset, it was my first dead concert. I guess Im still a virgin... Hopefully karma will take up the slack.

Well I'm back from the Summerfest show and I had an amazing time. I had no trouble whatsoever finding acid. They were called fractals and they were of kinda low in strength but I took at least six hits so I still tripped pretty hard. I had great seats, row N right in the center. I nearly flipped when they started the show with Cassidy. She Said, She Said was trippy as hell and Hell in a Bucket was a great rocking song to finish the first set. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Foolish Heart in the second set. I think Joan did a really good job singing that one. I really liked how Cassidy and Dark Star served as bookends to the show. Also the drums and space was really intense. I could have gone without Joan's chanting however. I was a little dissapointed with the sound quality. I couldn't hear Phil's bass very well and the keyboards sounded muddy. I thought the sound quality was much better at the Terrapin shows last summer and I was pretty much the same distance and angle from the stage. They are two different venues but they share many similarities. Overall, I think they played really well and I can't wait to see them in Colorado. The energy in the audience was a little weak but I have a feeling it won't be like that at Red Rocks.

I met Phil at the blood drive he did on Wed. I got my pic taken with him, got a poster and a Woodstock shirt signed, and talked to him for a minute. It was amazing.
The Red Rocks shows were tremendous-just look at the pics and setlists on dead.net. I saw about every song I wanted to see. I missed Sunday's show, though. It was great.

I also ordered the Red Rocks shows (the set of the 5 shows). Thursday's show had a very spacy first set - lots of jams and the first verse of Dark Star. Stella Blue (Fri encore) was perhaps the best song I've seen live, and I was very happy to see Brokedown Palace (Tues I believe) and Ripple (Fri).

I've been back from Colorado for several days now and I finally sat down to write about my experiences. So here they are in case anyone is curious. Sorry that it's so lengthy.
Well where to begin about my Red Rocks experience. I went by myself, driving 15 hours each way. When I arrived at Chief Hosa I knew it was gonna be one hell of a week. Chief Hosa is a 24 hours a day Shakedown Street. I set up camp at the top of the hill and went exploring. Almost immediately I found acid to buy, fractals of course. I bought a 10 strip for $40 (a rip off IMHO) and figured what the hell so I took a couple hits then and there. The people at Hosa were mostly very nice. I just went from person to person and mingled.
The next day was the first of their five shows. I didn't have a ticket but I heard you could hear the music really well if you just climed the hill in the back. I did this and I heard the show note for note. They sounded amazing beneath the huge sky and between the ancient, mamouth rocks. There were other people chilling up on the hill too. The set list for this night was off the wall. I was ecstatic when they began the show with Scarlet Begonias and everyone around me, including myslef, wondered if it would melt into Fire. And sure enough, it did. That's when I really wished I was inside. I always loved Queen Jane and I think Bob did a wonderful job singing it. Then when they started playing Weather Report, I really really wished I was inside because that is one of my favorite songs of all time. I'm glad I at least got to hear it. Second set was great as well. St. Stephen, Birdsong and Music Never Stopped were my favs. The encore of Saturday Night tease into Samson was completely off the hook. This show was just an incredible burst of energy to kick off the four shows that layed ahead.
I had a ticket for the second night. I sold my extra for face value, walked around the parking lot for several blissful hours, sometimes chilling at my car, and then I headed in. I was amazed at the place from the inside. The way the venue is nestled between the enormous rocks is intense, with or without psychedelics. The lights of Denver were visible from the top. They had Billy's art on display on the visitors center, along with free cheese. How classy. I had no idea Billy was such a a great artist. His paintings were extremely psychedelic. A guy I met said many of the pieces reminded him exactly of what it's like to smoke pure DMT crystal. The show that night was wonderful. I took one hit of fractals shortly before entering the venue. I knew it wouldn't do much but I just wanted that extra little something. In reality, I felt like I was tripping purely as a result of my surroundings. I got teary-eyed when they played Baby Blue in the first set. In the second set, Till the Morning Comes was a pleasant surprise and the Candyman was so chill and sweet-sounding. The Sugar Magnolia at the end of the second set rocked the whole place as Bob's voice ripped through the atmosphere. I went back to the campground that night a happy camper.
Things back at the campground got progressively more interesting. On one of the days, I came across a group of people who I started talking to near their picnic table. This guy had THE BEST opium I ever smoked in my life. He had stuff that wasn't even dry yet and was the consistency of molasses. It wasn't like a ball of tar. It smelled like sweet flowers. I was tripping a little on acid (so it must have been that first day I arrived at the campground) so when he offered me a hit of opium, it really put me in a different perspective. I ended up buying just ten dollars worth of the dried stuff. It looked like waxy latex or something and was light brown in color, not completely opaque. He was trying to push a $100 container of the non-dried stuff but I didn't have that kind of cash. A few minutes later, I was zoning out on their picnic table and they had left. Suddenly I heard voices calling for me and I looked up in my opium-afflicted psychedelic haze to see the same group of people in a nearby bus passing a joint around. They were inviting me to smoke with them. After walking over to the bus, I was told by the same guy that had the opium that the joint being smoked had DMT in it. "This'll give you a new perspective on things," he said. I took a few hits and, by God, he was right. He told me he had a gram of pure DMT crystal that was synthesized at Berkley. He said it was for sale but sadly I was very short on funds. I eventually left their little abode in Chief Hosa, glad that I decided to stop and talk to these people and curious about how I was drawn to them initially like something metaphysical guided me there. That's what it felt like, anyhow. Elsewhere in the camp, there was an abundance of nitrous. I witnessed people doing balloons, one after the other, for days on end. Incredible. There were a lot of mushrooms also and someone tried to sell me 2CB. There were good vibes all aound at Chief Hosa. People wre kind and curtious. Everything you needed was in this little village.
The third show, which I had a ticket for, was my favorite. I went with the people that camped next to me who were from Portland. We waited in line for four hours just so we could get a good seat. We were quite close to the stage when we got in so it was worth the wait. I was in kinda of a bad mood because my glass piece was confiscated at the entrance. This bastard kid felt it in my pocket and I had no choice. It was so beautiful too. I should have been more careful though. As soon as the music started, I forgot all about it. I took the rest of my acid that night, about 6 or 7 hits. It was a pretty mild trip. The first set was very upbeat and fun to dance to. New Speedway and Deep Elem were smoking. Looks Like Rain with Bob on acoustic literally made me ball my eyes out as I thought about how it felt when I lost my first and only love. And Bob sang it with so much feeling I though he was gonna burst. They way he kept repeating over and over "Can't stand the rain" in the end gave me chills down my spine. The Shakedown Street in the second set was, IMHO, THE most electrified, high-energy song that they played in the 5 days there. When I danced I felt like my feat were gonna leave the ground and I'd shoot up into space. The Truckin' was great too because it invoked a nostalgia for being on the road and it made me think "Wow, here I am far from home in a place that seems like another world and I'm having the time of my life."
On wednesday, the day off, I cruised up to Boulder just to check it out. It seemed like a cool town, not really a place I'd want to live, but cool. Aside from my brief trip to Boulder, I just relaxed that day and basked in the sun, drank a little beer and smoked a little pot.
I didn't have tickets for the last two shows but of course I sat on the hill and listened. On thursday I really liked how they started the show with Help > Slip and then they didn't play Frank until the end of the second set. I like when they bookend shows like that. I got much higher than I expected on the night of the last show after eating two pot cookies that I bought in the lot. I was so high that I couldn't even climb the back hill as high as I usually climbed. Also, I was tired after almost a week's worth of climbing up mountains and hills. I still heard the show well where I ended up. I knew they would play China > Rider and they did.
"I wish I was a headlight on a north bound train I's shine my light through the cool Colorado rain"
I left Hosa at 6 AM the next morning after about four hours of sleep. People were still up partying and I felt kinda sad that I had to leave. I had a 15 hour drive ahead of me. Since the Dead weren't playing for a few weeks, people needed a band to follow so the word on the street was that everybody was headed to The Gorge in Washington to catch Phish. I wanted to go but I was poor, had nothing to sell and I had a summer school class starting in a couple days. I bid Colorado a sweet goodbye and I trucked on out of there with a head full of both priceless memories a little psilocybin to make the drive just a little more colorful. I left that morning with an intensified desire to ramain on the road and to see many more Dead shows in the near future.

Oh how I Would love to find some acid. I hope that florida gets flooded with it for once. We havent seen any in waaaay too long of a time, and Florida REALLY needs it. Especially south florida. I hope I have some luck. Would love to help spread the love around. I'm going to the two shows in florida, sunrise at the Office Depot Center, and the Tampa show at the St. Pete Times forum.

Smoker For Peace, I was up on the hill the first night and the last two nights. All three nights I was about where you describe, about halfway up on some rocks. You could hear surprisingly well. Maybe you saw me there. I was the one with long hair and a tie-dye shirt.

I will be camping at the Float-Rite Park in Somerset, I'm going up Saturday to chill for an afternoon on the river.
They are super hard core about no bottles in this venue with the River so close and everything, so hide your beer very well or bring cans, my friend had to either dump a 12 pack in a jug or toss it to be let in at a Ben Harper show earlier this summer, they searched his coolers.

Hey man we have the same day planned !!!
I think they bottle policy is for everywhere, I believe one main gate takes you to both places... could be wrong here I'm not sure.
I have an extra for the show also, I'm probably going to go hand a hit of acid and the ticket to some poor tour kid and tell him to have a nice day, unless I am dire need of money.. we will see.. planning is still going on.

What's that you say Adom? Acid? Maybe you could hold on to one of those and we could make some sort of trade. Also, it's cool if you give your extra ticket to some poor kid but I don't have a ticket yet and I'd pay you face value. I could just buy a ticket from the box office though. But then you'd have the money to go on to Deer Creek! See you Sunday!

Yeah, i was there, it was weird; zero acid for me...and i spent 2 1/2 days poking around!~
The music in the show was great though!~
Dylan sort of disappeared early-on, but he was the highlight for me!

Anyone have problems with Dead ticketing this tour?
They are fucking me right now, I ordered 4 from them for August 3rd and haven't recieved anything. They said they would be here today and now the only help they offer is telling me to look under my fucking door mat, fucking swine, I'm going to gut them all.

Question regarding summer touring.
Who here has toured all summer with the dead, phish, etc. I would really love to do what Kosmic_charlie is doing for a summer, it's one of my dreams. Do you just get ur tickets and go wherever the wind takes you or does it require a tad bit more planning than that?
Stories on it would be great and or advice because I plan on doing it sometime in the next few years.

Early this year I ordered tickets for Bonnaroo, Phish at Alpine, the Dead at Red Rocks and Somerset, WI. I didn't really plan any more than that, figuring out where to stay when I get there. Sometimes I would camp at campgrounds around the venue, sometimes I would camp at the venue but that cost alot of money for a poor kid like me, I slept at a lot of rest areas this summer, the best times are when you meet cool people on the road like Kosmic Charlie who let you stay with them when you are on their home stomping ground.
I buy all my food, beer and all the party favors I can before the show so I don't have to buy expensive lot supplys. Sometimes I will spend 50$ in the lot, I'll walk around finding good people I care to support, sometimes tho I end up buying on impulses.
I ended up going to Kansas the day before tha Alpine Phish shows to see them, hitching with a friend, saving gas money. I went with out a ticket and walked around and found one in the lot. Tickets for all kinds of shows on tour where available making easy to go where ever the wind takes you. You could easily change your plans and make your way to a completely different part of the country.
I had something going on atleast every other weekend this summer coming back to the center of the midwest to get a alittle work in to support my travels, I don't usually like working the lots unless I'm on a hell of a road trip, it's usually all fun for me, I don't like being a salesman of any kind. Sometimes you get in a jam and need money though, being stuck is no fun and your money chances will disappear if you don't think quickly and act while all the tour kids and locals are still in the lots/venue. There is endless ways to make money.
Bottle water for instance is like $3.00 for a 12 pack and you could sell them 2 for 1$ or even for a dollar a piece.
7$ dollar six packs of dank beers go for 2/$5 1/3$.
A loaf of bread and a pack of cheese and you can make 1$ grilled cheese's.
Or you could bring along a pack of T-Shirts to sell when cash is low, tye dyes, band t's, personal art work sells best here.
You could also walk around and ask people if they have any work and sell drugs for them, this is gutter punk work most of the time tho and not recommended, it's not cool to me unless you know what you are doing and who your working for, I've never done anything like this myself but seen it work for people before.
Lots of ways to make money, be creative.

I pretty much toured all summer (got back home today). I hit Bonnaroo, went home, then went to the last 4 of Red Rocks (the Dead), then home, then Phish at Alpine Valley (2 nights), Deer Creek (3 nights), Burgettstown, PA, and Camden (2 nights), and the Dead at Joliet, Somerset, Deer Creek, Columbus, Darien Lakes, and Jones Beach (those were the last 7 shows of the tour). It was absolutely great and I highly recommend it.
That said, it requires some planning, and a good bit of money-so you need either savings or a way to make money on the road (sell water, beer, $1 grilled cheese, other food, hemp necklaces, etc before the shows). You need the money for camping, food, drugs, tickets, and gas. My advice would be to plan ahead early, save money, and buy your tickets for the shows that will be hard to get tickets for (ie Red Rocks, the Dead at Jones Beach this year). Otherwise, you can probably get a miracle (free ticket) or buy the tickets at the venue. Also, you should print out directions for the whole trip beforehand and maybe check out places to camp (though this isn't really necessary). On the whole, you can do it with little planning, but it's a lot easier and more fun if you plan ahead. Good luck to anyone to goes on tour!! It's great!

The first night at Jones Beach was very very good and I went home thinking what could they possibly do to top that .....
Well they opened the first of three sets with Uncle John's Band into Mountains of the Moon!
I knew right then it was going to be a very special night and I was right!
