Reinforcing casing for suspended 360 degree fruiting
    #21127743 -

Question -

Does internally reinforcing a casing and suspending it in a fruiting chamber have negative effects that I'm not thinking of?

What I've already searched -

Reinforcing casing
chicken wire casing
360 degree fruiting
fruiting all sides

The two things I did wrong in my process -

I used a clear plastic liner
After spawning I failed to remove the tape holding my liner to the inside of the tub

The result -

I jumped into mycology with both feet by going straight for Frank's 12 steps tek.  I boogered some stuff up which lead me to some ideas.  When I spawned to the coir/verm mix I had my plastic liner (clear) taped to the edges of the tub and I failed to remove the tape when done.  I even introduced the tub into fruiting conditions and didn't remove the tape.  Obviously this introduced fresh air and light to the sides and bottom of my casing.  I was blessed with a near even pinset all the way around the casing.  The top was a hair less than the sides and bottom but still better than most pics I've seen.  I propped the casing up on jars in my 66qt monotub so as to try and take full advantage of the pinset.  Flush after flush I've had outstanding yields, almost double what I've read is the normal amount per monotub.  The only downside is when I tried to get at the bottom on the third flush, the casing was getting weak and began crumbling.

What I'm thinking of trying next time -

I was considering following Frank's 12 steps again but layering 2-4 layers of stainless steel chicken wire when spawning the tub and integrating 4-6 eyelets into the chicken wire.  Yet again, using clear liner and keeping the sides secured to the box so air and light can get to the sides and the bottom.  Possibly wax paper on the top to try to even things out.  Once I have an even pinset again, I feel like I should be able to suspend the casing from the lid at the same height in a larger tub and fruit the entire casing, top to bottom, left to right.  Lifting the lid and casing together to a hanging position seems like it would be easier to tend the casing as well.

Has this been done before?  I couldn't find much information on it, nor could I find any reason not to try it.  I can't really see a reason why it would be a bad idea.

Any advice/information/links/ideas/criticisms/critiques would be appreciated.

What you're referring to is a bulk substrate, not a casing. A casing is an optional layer that is put over a substrate at 100% colonization.

Not untaping the liner isn't going to cause THAT many problems. I didn't untape this one!

And you can just stand the sub up on it's side and fruit it that way if you wanted. Don't use any wire for reinforcement inside your substrate....that's silly. :goodluck:
