Thought...
    #2105293 - 11/14/03 09:40 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

we use it all the time, but does anyone know what it is? If so can you show me some? No I don't mean a bunch of words or pictures I mean an actual thought.
Using the Swami method I will disprove you all exist except as delusions in MY mind and I in yours

I had a thought that this post about thoughts was really just thoughtless, but then I thought to myself about how sometimes irony can stem from such thoughts. I then thought about how, while I myself have all sorts of thoughts, that there is no way that I can think of that I could express my thoughts on here without a bunch of words or pictures.

What are your thoughts? I've expressed my thoughts. I thought that I didn't even know what this thought thread was about at first, but now I think that I have gotten my thoughts together and have thought of what this thought thread is actually all about.

THOUGHT THOUGHT THOUGHT! By the way, what kind of fucking word is thought?! T-H-O-U-G-H-T. I think that that string of letters is very bizzare to think about.
Peace.

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

If thoughts are things shouldn't we be able to demonstrate one in a pure form rather than as a metaphor? What we have is not much different than relating a dream or noting an electrical function in the brain. Can anyone explain what the thing called a thought is?
It seems to me if you're going to describe the universe you should understand the tools you are using, so if you think what is a thought?

Well, the only way we can even begin to try and explain a thought to another person is through one of the modes of communication we have. You said you didn't mean a bunch of words or pictures. That basically leaves musicial expression and body and facial expressions, but those are probably meant to not be used to, right?

What a thought is can't be expressed in a pure form because we have no way of communicating to others a thought in pure form. The moment it is converted to some mode of communication, bam! It is no longer a pure thought.

Not only that, I don't think any of us really know what a thought truly is. Is it some sort of impression made on our consciousness? Fuck, who knows..
Peace.

"If thoughts are things shouldn't we be able to demonstrate one in a pure form rather than as a metaphor?"

If a microchip is a thing, shouldn't you be able to describe to me exactly how one works, in detail? What, you tell me you don't fully understand how it works?

Well then, there's the obvious and likely possibility that microchips are part of some great mystical plan, and aren't really of this world, isn't there?

Just because we don't understand the mechanism of thought, doesn't mean it's magical.

I agree completely with what you are saying here. I mean, yes, we don't understand something, so it shouldn't be "magical". But certain things I like to think of I give the sort of "magical" feeling... not like "yes, some mystical force makes it happen!" or something, but it is just this pleasant, mystical feel... sort of spiritual, I guess.

I mean, that meaning is implied, but ALL meaning is implied. I like holding certain things with a meaning of spiritual awe...
Peace.

I do know how a microchip works as an array of microtransistors layered upon a doped silicon crystal to produce a series of on/off states which are converted to a simple language.Very mundane.
I do not remember claiming "mystical" origins for thought either just a simple query to demonstrate a thought by means other than the results of thought. If in fact a thought is a thing then this should be possible if not it brings to question if a thought is a real thing.
For example the origin of any physical event is able to be determined by cause and effect.Demonstrate the cause and effect of thought.
Mystical, no. Intangible yes.So is it "real"?

Well, an cheetah is a thing, but it is impossible to give an example of a cheetah without a string of words or a picture (either a real picture or an image collected by an eye).

I don't see how we can take a pure thing and express it without communication. This is what I am not understanding here.

Do you want me to somehow attach my brain to yours and share the thought I am experiencing? To send it over to your brain and have you experience the experience as well? That's the only way I can see it happening.

If something exists only subjectively, I don't see how it is possible to reproduce it objectively. We can string together words and images describing it, doing our best, but that feeling is still in our minds.
Peace.

I have seen and touched a cheetah and could produce one for you to do the same it is tangible and real.
If you cannot do the same with a thought can you say the same?
My point is while intangible a thought is real and sets a precedent of intangible reality.

A thought is more likely a series of events than a "thing".

"I have seen and touched a cheetah and could produce one for you to do the same it is tangible and real."

I have "felt" and experienced sadness, an emotion. I could "show" you sadness by presenting to you a common event which results in a human being sad, such as the death of a family member, etc. and say to you "this is sadness". Emotions, if not the same as, are just as intangible as thoughts. Because I was able to "show" you this emotion, according to you it is now considered real. Therefore, something intangible can also be considered "real".

Thoughts are made of memes, which are small pieces of ideas.

I can't "show" you an actual meme, rofl, and THAT'S THE PROBLEM! I think this is why Terence Mckenna always spoke of visual language, and attempting to take communication to a more definite meme-tranfer process on the most "objective" level possible

My two cents...
Thought is the effect of a cause. Thought in turn is also the cause of an effect.

Thought is an internal experiance derived from previous internal and external experiances. The utilization of symbols to connect, describe , make sense of, learn from, and extrapolate from, previous experiance.Process of understanding the past and anticipating the future.
