word... i thought i was gonna have to risk boiling my jars but i guess im straight.... With the pressure cooker deal how is it really done? its not a fancy one with the meter of the psi.
1.Do i just cover the top of my jars with tin foil put it in the pressure cooker and turn on the stove?
2. Do i add water?
3. The jar wont explode inside the pressure cooker or anything right?
any extra tips are very welcomed...thanks everyone
oh yeah and the cakes dont have to be exactly half a pit right? i can make them any size right? like a whole pint?

Here is some advice, since everyone wants to call you a kid and not give any to you. Are you sure what you have is a pressure cooker? What brand is it, if you know? I'm suprised that it doesn't have a gauge that would tell you the amount of pressure being built up... With any typical pressure cooker, you just put in about an inch of water and set the jars on a rack, PC at 15 PSI for 45 minutes and-- voila. If you can't figure out the pressure cooker you have, I reccomend just buying a new (big) one. I just got myself a great 23qt Presto, and it fucking kicks ass -- 24 jars in one cycle. Cover your jars with 8 layers of tinfoil for tops, that is 2 4 layer sections (fold once, fold again.... repeat with new piece and apply to the top of your jar). Feel free to check out the FAQ, as it should help you with all your problems that have probably already been asked before. Its a good way to keep the flames away
Anyway, good luck. Any other help, feel free to ask away (as long as you checked the search option/FAQ of course )

two things:
1. pressure cookers get up to about 250 degrees and twice normal atmospheric pressure. they are dangerous. make sure you know what you're doing.
2. if you're a new grower, read the FAQ. it is probably the mostly densely-packed collection of critical mushroom growing info to be found anywhere.

Very true. See if there is maybe a users guide for the pressure cooker you came across. Also, how many qts is it? You can also steam the jars in a big pot, although the time it takes is doubled (90 minutes). Always make sure to put a rack below the jars so they do not crack while being sterilized.

If you cook at 15 psi like everyone says, that's only 1.02 atmospheres, not 2. (1 atm = 14.7psi = 101.3 kPa)

what the "15 PSI" is referring to is the pressure above normal. if it was referring to the real pressure inside the cooker, that would mean that using one at 5 or 10 PSI would be a vacuum. the real pressure inside is almost 15 PSI (atmospheric pressure) before you even begin to heat it.

if you're a newbie grower, you should just do the PF tek, in which case you don't even need to fuss around with a pressure cooker.

uhh...14.7 psi + 15 psi= 29.7 psi 29.7 psi / 14.7 psi=2.02 atm Didn't like math in high school, right? Stay frosty. R.C.

mushmaster is right... Maybe you should just use a big pot to steam the jars for now instead of using that PC your parents have. Just make sure you have a rack inside the pot.

nah, he was just assuming that when we're all saying we're PC'ing stuff at 15 PSI, we mean that literally. the real pressure of course is closer to 30, because there's close to 15 PSI bearing down on stuff just from the atmosphere. no big deal. i bet alot of people get that mixed up.

how high should the rack be? about an inch above the bottom?

a half inch or so is plenty. even a quarter inch is probably enough. as long as they aren't touching the bottom, it's ok. for my very first grow, i had to cut a towel into a circle and use that.

LMAO, I did the towel thing once also. About the pressure cooker thing - I thought that was all understood and didn't really need to be said. Oh well, all understood. Now I'm back to watching COPS, baby.

my gekko is a newbie grower and used a PC its first time. nothing to it really, you just need to RTFM cover to cover and be safe. your goal is to grow mushrooms, not get shrapnel in the eye :P
