getting loph base to pup after grafting
    #21001128 -

Can somrone offer their expertise here?
I have been wondering about those of you that take very young loph seedlings (like <1mo) and graft them....

My question specifically is this: how old would a loph have to be for the remaining root base from the scion donor plant have to be to survive and produce pups (if that is even possible)?  Seems like if you cut the head off of a cactus and leave the roots/base to grow, it might produce pups and continue living, while the grafted head/scion can go on with it's rapid, healthy growth...?

Is this possible, or a common practice that just goes without saying? Or just something that isnt done? Saving the rootstock of the donor cacti, that is. Seems like it would be a waste to just cut the base off and toss it if it was possible, and yet I havent read anything on this topic.

'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

This my theory. When you Graft at days old there isn't any areoles left to pup.  You could leave them to grow a year or more then more aeroles develop.

I personally throw away days old seedlings' roots. I don't expect anything to happen. That's just me.

Thanks ferrel.

Yeah, I kind of imagined that would be the case as far as super young sproutlings would be concerned.

I might have better asked my question if I didnt include the <1 mo seedling part...  it was just that young age being talked about before that sparked this question in my mind.

Assuming,  due to my lack of experience with lophs, that after being beheaded lophs will simply survive and pup when their head is cut off for grafting - how young is too young too expect the remaining base to do its pupping thing and survive?

And ferrel, would you say that in the long run it is just more efficient to just use super young sproutlings to graft and just count the base of em as a cost of having a head start? Or would having the extra pupping base be worth holding off to behead and graft??? I see you mentioned "a year or more", would you say that a year would be the youngest you could expect the base to pup out after surgery?
