Lil help with Pedro "grafting"
    #4558873 - 08/20/05 01:45 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Hello, folks.
Some of you might remember this guy that I posted about back in Feb of this year:

Well, he's taken off quite nicely, tripling in mass with 6months, as seen here:

What I want to do is cut out that thin, etiolated portion on the original stalk and put the top back on. Which is why I put grafting in quotes, I'm not attaching another species, i just want it to look better.
I understand all I need to do is sterilized a blade, cut the middle out and plop the top back on, aligning the ribs.
What I need help with is finding something good to secure the top on as it gets pretty windy here at times and sometimes that rolls into a big storm.
Secondly, do I have to worry about pups springing from where they will be joined? I don't want it getting top heavy and falling over.

if that was mine, i'd either cut the top off and root it or just leave it alone.

if you are set on grafting, you should make some kind of splint to keep the top of the cactus from sliding off the bottom. maybe dowels between the ribs would work well.

I'm going for looks, this is my baby, not my farm. So I want the top back on the bottom with the thin part gone. If I just chopped and rooted the top, I'd have a stump that'd pup.

Dowels might be the best way to go. I hadn't thought of that. Thank you.

I've done a fair bit of grafting before.
Use a sharp exacto knife blade that has been sterilized (alcohol is fine). Cut the part out that you don't want. Make a clean straight cut on the bottom section and on the top section and place them together. The middle core should automatically line up. Take a large square of nylon panty hose and pull it over the tip fairly tightly and tape it to the pot. Pulling the panty hose over the spines will help to partially secure it. Leave it for 3-4 days in a humid shaded location so it doesn't dry out at the cut line. Remove the stocking after 3-4 days and keep out of direct light for another week. Do not water for these couple of weeks. If you only apply the top few inches of the tip cutting you should be able to secure it without problems. If you want to graft a long piece the splint is a good idea. Just make sure the top section is very snuggly held to bottom section without actually "crushing" the 2 parts together.

Just regrafting the top back on won't make it look any better... It will scab up, probably won't fit together plumb, and will be alot more hassle than cutting the top off and rooting that. I suggest rooting the top, and using the base to graft another cacti

There's nothing wrong with that. It just adds some character.

I wonder if, in time, it will pup right below the constriction and branch there. I just noticed it's pupping at the base too. Damn nice plant man.

if your going to graft i sugest you graft an areole or 2 in a cleft style graft. rooting a cutting would be your best option with the original. if you get 2 areoles to graft properly it will make 2 new pedro babys on top that will fill in nicely and look very natural. good luck man
