una, hving lost the leaves, would it die? to be honest i dont care much about the leaves, im sure it speeds up the growth, but once its big enough, parhaps the removal of leaves and growth slowing would speed up alkaloid production, what you think? another thing might be just to graft it long enough to establish size, then cut about an inch down from the peyote and root it, bingo, a peyote with Pereskiopsis roots and growth parameters. at that point i reckon you could actually grow it hydroponically, cool beans!

without leaves it will not die, just grow a lot slower. The leaves with their large assimilation surface are responsible for the superfast growth.
Concerning alkaloid production i really don't know (i'm not really interested in this). Opinions on the subject are very far apart.
Here's a really good thread http://forums.spiritplants.com/index.php...779b810c474458c on SPiritplants in which MS Smith (cactus specialitst extra ordinaire) says (i quote):
Quote:
...... the answer is quite clearly no, there is no change in the chemical structure of one plant due to the grafting of it to another plant. It would appear that all a base plant does is increase the availability of water to the scion, allowing the scion to grow at a faster pace. The production of chemicals within a plant occurs within its own cellular material, something that is not transferred from one plant to the other......

I wonder if the peyote breakes/falls off the Periskiopses if it gets too big because the stem of the periskiopses isn't that thick...
Mitchnast, good Idea! But I don't know how soon a Periskiopses roots again?
Not in garden centers, hmm... well, I'll find myself an other way to obtain them

look what i found...it's a cactus on a stick LOL (not my pic btw)
Seriously the pereskiopsis would need some kind of support with the big scion on top.
Stefan if you shoot me a PM i think i can help you out

OK this is the BEST thread I have EVER SEEN HERE !!!!!!!!
3 months !!!!, now what this cactus newbie wants to know is this... (since he has pedro and peyote on the way...I live in canada its fully legit!)
........Peyote grafted to pedro grows faster, instead of 14 years of solo peyote grwoth , in 1 year you see the same results!!, (I am sweating right now thinking about what I am going to say next)
is that how big the peyote gets in one year on a pedro???, from what I saw in pics(I am a cactus newbie remember) I thought that the graft UNA did got FATER IN 3 MONTHS then a PEYOTE ON A PEDRO IN 1 YEAR!?!?!?!??!?!?!??????
WOW.......I am SO impressed !
this makes me think of growing a bunch inside and haveing a little peyote grafts with Pereskiopsis in a closet or something
UNA you are the coolest!

I've just seen a thread in which Una posted pics of his in vitro cactus tissue cultures, and seeing this thread too, I think I have more respect for Una than anyone else in the world right now! That is some truly amazing stuff. I planted some peyote seeds back in spring (some T. Peruvianus and T. Pachanoi too), they're looking pretty healthy, I think I might try to get hold of some Pereskiopsis (but which sp.?) and try this out!! I was originally going to graft onto a nice Peruvianus that I have, but I was reluctant to do so since it's such a nice specimen...

looks like your loph directly sprouted from each aureole!
I think the pereskiopsis under the stick-plant was completely covered with soil or gravel

Just have to try this..i got 20 Lopho-seedlings sprouting right now.. Very nice work indeed Una. Una: Which Pereskiopsis are suitible/most suitible as rootstocks? Or at least which are you using?
Pereskiopsis aquosa Pereskiopsis blakeana Pereskiopsis diguetii Pereskiopsis gatesii Pereskiopsis kellermanii Pereskiopsis porteri Pereskiopsis rotundifolia Pereskiopsis scandens
Thats what i found this far.. One thing for you guys looking for Pereskiopsis is that some call em Opuntia..
Peace..

THANK YOU for that info!!! I spent hours looking for Pereskiopsis sp. on the websites of every european cactus nursery I could find, and was having no luck! NOW I should be able to find some and get grafting :D:D.

It seems that grafting onto something else is just a waste of time if size and speedy growth is what you?re after.. The link above even suggest vertical grafting..

pretty cool, with that vertical grafting you could really make a 'peyote tree' it seems more difficult though...

Well, yep a "wee" bit harder.. But if one has a lot of seedligs it would be pretty cool to try.
Una: Do you know which Pereskiopsis you did use or would anyone be OK..?
Peace..

you can get them at sobeys, they usually have a cerus peruvians crest mutation grafted on top and no leaves, but then if you made a cutting and it pupped i recon youed get some leaves

I'm not even really sure which Pereskiopsis species i have :s I'm pretty sure all of them work since i haven;t read any specific recommendations.
Opuntia is NOT Pereskiopsis, the species really don;t look alike.
Vertical grafting (as posted by Stefan) is very hard. The tiny scions dry up very quickly, but you could do it in batches. Say, 3 in the morning, 3 in the evening, 3 the next mornings while keeping the graft in a high humifity environment.
The next time i do some grafts i might take some pics

The most famous Opuntia is that stupid 'Bunny Ears' cactus with those tiny irritating spines. Although I have seen Opuntia which do resemble the Pereskiopsis in the pics.

I didnt say that opuntia was the same thing as Pereskiopsis, what i meant was that some vendors do mix them up..They are two distinctivley diffrent speices.
re: vertical grafting: It seems a bit harder, but still achiveble if one put ones mind to it.. I just found the link and thougth it might be of interest for this forum.
This grafted on a opuntia..
