emergency graft successful
    #3524044 - 12/20/04 01:59 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

A small tray of loph seedlings (only 4) were sitting under 2 20w flouros. They were accidentaly knocked off the shelf and onto the floor. Upon close inspection, it was evident that 3 of the 2 day old seedlings could be saved and placed back in the soil. The 4th seedling was severed from its base, and would surely not survive unless successfully grafted.
Luckily a small cluster of Opuntia, recently harvested from the wild in Texas, was sitting in a sunny window on the other side of the room. After sterilizing a seraded steak knife (no razor was available) with some rubbing alcohol, an approx. 2 inch x 2 inch pad was cut from the plant. With the steak knife, the new rootstock was cut and prepared for grafting, as was the little loph seedling. This was anything but delicate; a sawing motion had to be made with the dull steak knife. The scion and rootstock were pressed together and held steady for approx 10 minutes. The base of the opuntia was dusted with rooting hormone and placed in a clay pot filled with cactus soil. The soil was thoroughly moistened and the pot was placed inside a 1 gallon ziplock bag. The bag was then placed back under the flouros with the other loph seedlings.
Four weeks later, the graft has taken and growth is easily visible. All appears to be going great. The success was surprising for a first graft attempt which followed none of the rules of grafting.

Good job. Luckily you had the Opuntia pads. From the grafting I've done with Opuntia, I am going to be using it more and more as a grafting stock.
