The Amazing Inverse Exploding Cristate Peyote Graft ?
    #3147856 - 09/17/04 12:59 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

This is the result of an upside-down graft of a Lophophora williamsii var williamsii onto a Myrt stock.

For a long time I didn't think the graft took, as there was only swelling of the scion, with no obvious Loph growth or pups. Then one day the swelling burst and you can see what has happened.

I would like to get this cristate onto it's own roots but it'll probably be a bit of a messy job, particularly as the original tap-root has hardened into something like tough cork.

I'd wait until it grows some pups to do anything.

Wow, never saw anything like that. It's really cool how it opened up from inside. I would definately give it some more time before thinking about removing it from the host. I hope you keep us updated.

Good luck with your cristate!

Give it some time to grow and keep up informed.

I tried to edit the original post to make comparison easier, but there's gremlins preventing me editing it.

Here's an update, this is how it looks today - just nine days after the original pic. It's certainly expanding quickly:

Pain in the ass, three more cuttings and they all rotted from the callus up. Mushmush claim that they root readily, think we're just unlucky.

Intruder Alert!!!

Anyone recognise these? Didn't notice them at first. No-where to be seen on the rest of my collection. There's several of these on the graft, yellowish in colour, and about 2mm long!

Soak some cigarette butts, and spray him for a day or two.

I use a safety pin to spear them.

I would not use any pesticides! At worst, try a dilute alcohol solution.

First let me say, very nice!!!

Could you describe in as much detail as possible, how you made your graft. I understand grafting, I am just looking to try and duplicate your results of getting a crested cacti (lo. will. is illegal here, so I will have to try a legal cactus like aztikium) none the less I would love to hear how you made the graft. Like:

how did you sterilize your blade/razor to make the cut
how did you secure the scion to the base
how long was the scion secrued to the base
did you do anything to provide humidity
how did you overlap the growth rings, or other placement info
how old was the scion
how much of the root was grafted as the scion
anything else you can think of that you may have done in the process

You may have stumbled on to something repeatable here, and that would be great. Thanks for sharing your pictures and for any additional details you can provide.

I also thought of:

The orientation of the root scion
If there was any of the green flesh left on the root part used as the scion.

Perhaps you may think I am being picky, but just as in recalling dreams, the little details amount to everything. So many scientific discoveries have resulted from the scientist noting every little detail and then the experiment failing to produce the expected results. Then going over the minute details carefully and repeating them meticulously - the odd result is repeated and the crucial detail elicited. Thanks again.

I dont understand how you made this grat. Is this the root section grafted on? It looks like the whole graft was calus?? Was there a visible growth top when you grafted on?
