- I use alcohol wipes for all my tools.
Quote:
how did you secure the scion to the base
- Rubber bands going over the top of the scion and under the pot, quite significant pressure is applied between scion and stock.
Quote:
how long was the scion secrued to the base
- This graft is about 14 months old, for ages I only saw swelling kinda like a bubble inflating. There was no noticable peyote tissue. The bubble was green translucent kinda like a scab healing over on human skin (but green)
Quote:
did you do anything to provide humidity
Nope, I don't find increased humidity necessary when using Myrt and fair sized scions.
Quote:
how did you overlap the growth rings, or other placement info
Dead centre.
Quote:
how old was the scion
A typical three year old peyote, 2.5cms (1 inch) diameter.
Quote:
how much of the root was grafted as the scion
All of it, imagine removing the button right down to the soils surface, what was left was grafted. After a full year the root was completely dried out - resembling cork. I then clipped it off as it was just in the way.

anything else you can think of that you may have done in the process
After the swelling burst I moved it to my growroom (400w Metal Halide) hoping that a few pups would appear but instead I got a cristate.
Quote:
The orientation of the root scion
Straight on, the root scion was basically turned upside down and brought into contact with the rootstock.
Quote:
If there was any of the green flesh left on the root part used as the scion.
Yes, but very little. I inferred that some would be required if pups were to be formed.

gr0wer said: I dont understand how you made this grat. Is this the root section grafted on? It looks like the whole graft was calus?? Was there a visible growth top when you grafted on?
Hopefully some of the above will answer your question, but rather than leave the root in the soil after removing the button, I pulled it out, turned it upside down and grafted it as if it were a button itself. It wasn't allowed to callus i.e. it was grafted immediately after the button was removed. -Jack

Isnt Cristate a genetic thing, so unless the cutting was Cristate too then this is just a squished button?

No-one knows what causes a cristate, but I found this Quote:
Dimmitt and other plant experts say possible causes of cresting include genetic quirks, frost damage or growth changes brought on by insects, lightning strikes or bacterial infections. "Anything that damages the growing tip might cause a crest to form," Dimmitt says. "But it's all speculation. This is one of those 'the truth is out there' stories. But we don't know what it is at this point."
from here. And there's also a thread at Overgrow here that demonstrates cristation (new word ) from regular growing scions.

So, did this grow out of an aureole like a normal pup? You said that "very little" green tissue was left, I'm just wondering if there was enough to have a healthy aureole left on...

It's difficult to say, it appears to have come from between the union of the stock and scion. It certainly did not come from any of the tissue around the circumference of the scion.

Jack,
Thanks for the in-depth reply. In addition to the methods you have described, I have heard that direct destruction of the apical meristem of a very young cacti with a needle, and mutagenic chemicals can cause cristae formation. Thanks for the insights in how yours developed.
Sincerely,
reite
