Solyndra, Crony Capitalism, and how the DOE loan program shows that government investment works.
    #20857693 -

http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/can-we-finally-put-solyndra-to-bed-20141117

So let us all take a trip to a few years back, when the likes of every Conservative pundit, and the pundits of Shroomery (such as Zappa, did you know he reads the NYT every day?) and all that could be talked about was the big fat failure of Solyndra, and how the OBAMA socialist, communist government was not actually either of those things, but a crony capitalist government picking winners and losers in the green energy field.

I mean it wasn't like an actual communist country, let's say China, was throwing way more money at solar tech because you know, they actually pick winners and losers.  But don't forget, OBAMA

But, remember, Solyndra was huge, around $550m-$650m!  A whole 1.3% of the DOE loan portfolio.  Even though the 2005 congress (remember, Obama was president then too) that authorized the program assumed it was going to lose $10bn.

So with all the loans that are outstanding or have been lost due to bankruptcy, we must be half way there, right, having lost around $5bn by now?  Remember, Obama.

But that doesn't seem to be the case... Communism... with $780mn of losses, and $810mn in interest collected... the communist socialist Federal government is $30mn in the black.  Because of communism.  And Obama. And Kenya.

I think the best two paragraphs of the article are as follows:

Quote:
Yet Mitt Romney, an unusually financially sophisticated candidate, made the demise of Solyndra a central theme of his presidential campaign in 2012. Visiting the solar manufacturer's shuttered headquarters in California, he attacked the president on jobs, estimating "about half" the businesses the loan guarantee program had invested in had gone under.

The true number of failures at the time was only three out of several dozen—it has since crept up to four. As recently as Tuesday, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, the vice chair of the House Energy Committee's oversight panel, was still declaring "most of these companies are bankrupt and are no longer in existence, and the taxpayer is left holding the bag."

I guess since retards like this can be in line to take of science committees, retards like Blackburn who can't do simple math can be vice chairs of other scientific committees.

Oh, did I mention, that the final estimate for profit by the communist socialist Feds for the DOE loan program is now at ~$5bn?

How long before the Right starts trying to claim this as a victory?

It's proven time and time again that public investment works.

We wouldn't even be communicating through this medium if it wasn't for our tax dollars funding research and development.

Our tax dollars, kemosabe?  You got a 50 year old mouse who has actually paid them in your pocket?  If you don't think this medium would have evolved without tax money you're crazy.

We would've figured out a lot of things eventually.

Nope. Not even close:

Quote:
The Department of Energy, which gave us debacles like the Solyndra and Abound Solar bankruptcies, has put out a report claiming that its green-energy loan programs are turning a profit for taxpayers — a $5 billion profit, in fact. This claim was credulously reported by Bloomberg Businessweek, but don’t pop the champagne yet: Tax Policy Center president and former acting CBO director Donald Marron takes apart this claim. The government’s “profit” calculations don’t even take into account the major expenses:

Quote:
DOE’s report does not address this issue, except in a footnote in a table (cut and pasted above) revealing that its $810 million of “interest earned” was “calculated without respect to Treasury’s borrowing cost.” In other words, DOE reports gross interest received, not the net interest taxpayers have earned after subtracting Treasury borrowing costs. The incomplete figures in the table seem to suggest that DOE has eked out a $30 million profit on its lending ($810 million in interest less $780 million in loan losses). But when we account for Treasury borrowing costs, taxpayers are actually well behind.

The report does not allow us to say just how far behind. We do know, however, that DOE loans are typically made at small, sometimes zero, spreads above Treasury rates. So a large portion of DOE’s “interest earned” must have been offset by borrowing costs. That puts taxpayer losses in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The same concern applies to DOE’s statement that interest payments on these loans will eventually top $5 billion.

Taxpayers aren’t making money off these government loan guarantees, period.

And that’s even before we consider that a lot of projected government “profits” are often the result of an accounting illusion. As I mentioned before, unlike private companies, the government ignores the market risks of loans, making it look as if the agency is turning a profit when, in fact, it isn’t. The CBO issued a report on this issue here, I wrote about it here, and Marron has a paper on this here.

As always, more at the link. Go there now.

Borrowing costs?  :wtf:

Since when do we add "borrowing costs" to any Government project?  If we buy a $350 million F-22 fighter jet, do we add "borrowing costs"???

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

There are no costs at all to the government.  It isn't their money that they are spending. :smirk:

Why would we need moderators to do that when there is a plethora of moonbat members ready, willing and able to provide that service?

It is no secret that the National Review has a conservative viewpoint.  Which is fine.  What the NY Times pretends to be is fraud.

You set the bar pretty low for plethora.

I can think of 3 people who typically post with a liberal slant, 4 if you wanna include me.

but rarely do I see any of them posting an opinion piece from theteapartysucks.com or some other obviously astroturfed media outlet.

I'm not sure how many times I have to repeat this to you...

Fiscal conservative, social liberal, constitutionalist.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers
