Mitt Romney's Solyndra(s)...
    #16327381 -

So with presidential hopeful Mitt Romney visiting Solyndra to give a surprise press conference about Obama's failure as president, he seems to forget his time in the state house, where he doled out a little cash of his own taxpayers to "pick winners and losers" as he blames Obama for doing.

Quote:
While running the state Romney threw $1.5 million behind Konarka, a firm that filed for bankruptcy only a short time later. Romney then gave $2.5 million to Evergreen Solar which also filed for bankruptcy in 2011. If that wasn’t enough Mitt Romney also poured $2.5 million in taxpayer dollars into biotech firm Spherics Inc. which closed its doors three years later.

Is this why Mitt doesn't want to talk about his governorship?  Would he seem too... I don't know, sensible, for the far Right?

This story involves two things I don't like, government subsidies to private corporations and Mitt Romney but this is just pathetic.

First, $1.5 million is just a little less than $500+ million.

Second, unlike Obama and Solyndra, there's no accusation that Romney steered the money to donors.

Most importantly, the Romney administration gave the money NINE years ago. The company survived nearly a DECADE after getting the state subsidy.

Solyndra on the other hand went under less than 2 years after getting Obama's largess.

In fact, Obama was shoveling money to Solyndra as fast as possible even as auditors were saying the company was failing.

So yeah, other than being different in every way, they are exactly the same.

Read the whole thing.  There are tons of links.

Solyndra?  I think not.

Acusphere, a biotechnology firm headed by a Romney campaign donor, got $2 million in 2004 that it was supposed to put toward a $20 million manufacturing facility in Tewksbury, which never became fully operational. Calls to Acusphere’s headquarters in Lexington were not returned.

...

Acusphere defaulted on the loan after a “nearly complete shutdown” in 2008.

You're right, the 1.5 million dollar loan to one company may not add up, but what about the rest?  Or is the Boston Herald making it all up?  Is four years in "business" really that much better than two?

Quote:
The two companies — Acusphere and Spherics Inc. — stiffed the state on nearly $2.1 million in loans provided through the state’s Emerging Technology Fund, a $25 million investment program created while Romney was governor in 2003 that benefitted 13 local firms.

Well it looks like about 10% of the program didn't pan out.

Also from your link:

Quote:
She said the company defaulted on the remainder of the loan after the Food and Drug Administration rejected approval of the firm’s top product, a heart medication.

Hmm.  A pharmaceutical company.  You do know that they are highy speculative, right.  Still, people were employed for years.  Oh well, death happens.

And Solyndra was what, 1%?

Which parts did he veto?  Where the loans weren't going to his donors?  Why would he only veto half?

I should hope that $500M was more than 1%.  Solyndra isn't only the one to fail, either.  What is particularly galling about Solyndra is that they were still giving them money long after it was clear they were fucked.  The Romney co?  They operated for 9 years, employing people and paying taxes.  Solyndra?  Not so much.

The parts involving state venture capital activities.

Do you mean the combined $7,000 donors?

Depends on what was in the other half.  Could have been anything.  Doesn't much matter, though, since they over-rode his veto.  How he can get tagged for funding he vetoed is a bit of a mystery.

Interesting Solyndra timeline here
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/322334.php

Bush shelved it and Obama resurrected it immediately and announced a $535M loan on March 29.  Why?  Because George Kaiser made 4 trips to the White House March 12-13 2009.  Who is George Kaiser?  He personally donated  $53,500 to Obama in 2008.  He is also a huge investor in Solyndra.  Or should I say was a huge investor.  I wonder if he got his money out.

This is a good read about Solyndra that specifically mentions George Kaiser and does a pretty good job explaining the whole situation.

Quote:
It's important to note here that Kaiser was never in a position to profit from Solyndra — his contributions to his foundation are "irretractable."

"He could not withdraw money from the foundation for his private use," said C. Renzi Stone, a spokesman for the foundation. "So that money is there forever. ... The investment in Solyndra would not have benefited Mr. Kaiser personally in any way."

So what?  It's his foundation, it has his name on it and I still wonder if he or his foundation got their money out of Solyndra.

At any rate, the point is that a big money donor lobbied for Solyndra and they got a $500M loan.  I really don't care if it was to line his personal pockets or not.  All that matters is that a giant donor asked for and got a huge loan for a company that was dubious at best and had already been rejected by the people who spent the most time checking into it.  In two months time the geniuses at Obama Inc. were able to decide that "well, no this company doesn't suck, by golly, and we're going to send a whole fuckton of other people's money on down there 'cause George Kaiser says its a good thing?"

Spare me.  This wasn't a business decision.  It was a political decision and several thousand poor children are going to starve because the Obama administration gave their lunch money away to the Jetsons.  The prick.

I don't disagree that it was a completely political decision. Obama's camp was very excited to make this company their poster child, and they did, just not how they expected. It was terrible business sense and the loan shouldn't have been given out. Though, as PolitiFact noted, many private investors were also surprised at how quickly the company tanked.

 Yes, that decision definitely caused thousands of children to starve.

Much bigger pricks did way more damage before Obama. How many children would 2.3 trillion feed? Or how much more has simply dissapeared during the bush admin. I  give a little credit for the mess were in to Osama bin Ladin. If it wasn't for his bullshit Bush may have spent his entire presidency cutting brush on his ranch. Obama killed that fucker.

Who's to Blame for High Gas Prices?

Share Post PrintJune 6, 2008 Posted by John at 4:43 PM
For several decades, the Democratic Party has pursued policies designed to drive up the cost of petroleum, and therefore gas at the pump. Remarkably, the Democrats don't seem to have taken much of a political hit from the current spike in gas prices. Probably that's because most people don't realize how different the two parties' energy policies have been.

Congressman Roy Blunt put together these data to highlight the differences between House Republicans and House Democrats on energy policy:

ANWR Exploration House Republicans: 91% Supported House Democrats: 86% Opposed

Coal-to-Liquid
House Republicans: 97% Supported
House Democrats: 78% Opposed

Oil Shale Exploration
House Republicans: 90% Supported
House Democrats: 86% Opposed

Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Exploration
House Republicans: 81% Supported
House Democrats: 83% Opposed

Refinery Increased Capacity
House Republicans: 97% Supported
House Democrats: 96% Opposed

SUMMARY

91% of House Republicans have historically voted to increase the production of American-made oil and gas.

86% of House Democrats have historically voted against increasing the production of American-made oil and gas.

PAUL adds: It's useful to keep this sort of thing in mind when we hear (on something like a daily basis these days) that the Republicans have run out of ideas or that Republican ideas didn't work. The truth is that most major Republican ideas weren't tried because the Democrats blocked them. Increasing the domestic production of oil and gas (a move so obvious it barely meets the standard for being an idea) is hardly the only example. Social security reform and school choice also come quickly to mind. Republican-backed policies for increasing the number of Americans with health insurance were also blocked by Democrats. And so forth.

We're producing more oil than we have in a decade, and fuel exports are at an all-time high.

Next?

Fuel exports.  We are importing crude and refining it and exporting some of the refined product.  We import almost twice as much crude as we produce domestically.
