scion pup removal? (pics)

So I have several grafts going right now and my current biggest graft I believe is starting to pup at the very bottom. I don't particularly care for extra pups at the moment and I know they'll slow my scion down. I wanted to see what the communities opinion was before I hacked at my baby. Iv had bad experiences before cutting of pups toward the base trying to focus energy into the main column and had a boom of extra pups replace the one or two I removed. Look forward to hearing some feed back. Decided to through in some pics of the graft family right now. Sorry for quality they're just from my phone.

Cut them off. It will slow down the growth. Especially with that peres. as your root stock.

Ok thanks for the encouragement.  Now if I just cut deep enough to remove the whole areole will this ensure no further pups will come from the cut site? Iv taken some cuts from larger specimens towards the base were I cut as flush to the main column as I could but it still pupped from the cut. So I believe the complete removal of the areole is required.

Those pereskiopsis will throw pups quite often even with a scion. Just prune them as they come up. Usually, I have this problem when there's a bad connection or the scion didn't take, but those pereskiopsis will try to pup all the time. It's best just to nip them off to ensure all the plants energy is sent up to the scion.

The nice thing about pereskiopsis is they are extremely hardy and root quickly. I had one rot and re root  with no problems.

Removing the areole will stop any future pups emerging from that site.

I'd personally leave it alone but if I were to remove it, I'd just wait for it to emerge and then scrape the entire pup off with my fingernail. Using a razor that close to the graft union I never feel comfortable about. I've chopped the wrong part a few times.

You could also chop the top off that grafted Trichocereus and then graft that onto a Pachanoi or something. The emerging pup will take its place and you'll have Two plants.

Hmm I'm leaning towards just being more patient and scraping it off with my finger once it grows a little more.

I agree Karode I would like to put these on some better root stock ( probably pachanoi ). I unfortunately don't have any good rooted stock right now so I'll have to go take some cuttings. What's your thoughts on grafting to unrooted cuttings? Im probably just being impatient but some of the larger cuttings I take keep growing and take a little longer to root than normal.

Got some nice SS02 X ss01 and SS02 X serra blue grafts going. When I get the time I'll try to take some better pictures as they've progressed more.

When my peres with grafts shoot out new side branches, I've been letting them grow a few inches (2 or3") and then pinch the main growing tip off (but only if it's far enough below the top graft to not over take it with apical dominance).  This leads to more leaves that increase the ability of the plant to photosynthesize (and grow).  As long as none of the side branches grow taller than the graft, they'll still send their energy to the top of the plant.  If the side branches pop out new growth (which none have yet), I'll remove those.

You can definitely graft to unrooted stock. I've seen this with Pachanoi and Peruvianus. My personal experience says the fatter the base, the fatter the scion. It's incredible to see the difference between grafting to pereskiopsis and grafting to a big fat Trichocereus.

Iv seen a bit on grafting to unrooted cuttings I just don't see a whole lot on it so I wasn't sure if it wasn't all that good. One thing I've had a slight issue with in the past was I'd use plastic wrap to hold the scion down and maintain humidity but it'd keep it to moist and I'd see some rust colored spots. Never caused any problem just a worry to me about the possibility of my seedlings rotting. Never had any issues with peres probably cause I don't water them a few days before grafting. Only had that issue when I first started grafting with a few opuntia and trich cuttings. I like the ease of being able to graft to cuttings I think I'll just keep an extra close eye on my next few.

The plastic wrap grafting tek should only really be used for pereskiopsis grafts. Using it for grafting to species like Trichocereus will create the problem you report. It keeps the union too humid and creates an anaerobic environment because it doesn't allow for air movement. Perfect conditions for bacterial and fungal growth.

Just use electrical tape, elastic bands, stockings, something that can fix the scion securely in place while also allowing adequate air movement around the union. Fresh air is important for the graft to heal successfully.

And you can certainly graft to unrooted root stocks. Actively growing is best time, dormant can also be done but it works best in my experience when the root stock you're grafting to isn't dehydrated.

Awesome thanks for the info everyone and Karode you rule. I guess I was worried that if I had the graft in open air it would just dry up to much and it wouldn't take. I really like the stockings idea, I think I'll uses that or electrical tape. I still think the scions are to "wimpy" for rubber bands right now.
