Soviet Union/Downfall of Communism/Actions in the Middle Eas

Hi, I'm not too knowledgeable about the Soviet Union and the reason they were involved in the Middle East before the downfall of communism. I was hoping someone here could fill me on the nature of those incursions and why the Soviet Union was involved in them. Conspiracy theories are fine, but I would rather hear more accepted reasons as I might use some of this for a school project. Was the Soviet Union trying to secure energy resources with its incursions into Middle Eastern countries in the latter half of the 20th century? If so, did this lead to the downfall of communism when the United States foiled, or rather kept pace, with many of their attempts to take over middle eastern countries and hold deals with leaders, and did this eventually force (or contribute to forcing) the Soviet Union to drop communism in order for improved trade relations and resources? Or am I completely off here, which I probably am? I thought that the Soviet Union was forced to drop communism because they were so poor and needed money and U.S. help, can someone explain to me if this is right or if there were more facets involved in the fall?

is this for school or just out of curiosity?
either way, a little google searching is going to give you much more accurate answers than the sort of biased information people are going to be spilling over this question at this board.

More so for a school project, but I would like to know different theories for my own personal knowledge as well. I should probably research it, but I wanted to find out if there was any specific link between foiled Soviet actions in the Middle East and their eventual collapse. I'm not well versed in this area so I'm trying to gage if I'm way off base before I delve into the plethora of information an internet search would provide.

I think the purpose of the cold war was for the ruling political/military/corporate elite of both the US and USSR to carve up the resources of the third world between them. The "fight against communism" or "fight against capitalism" was just the propaganda. We can see the cold war being replayed now with the war on terror - the propaganda story is we're fighting terror just like we were fighting "communism", the reality is we're carving up the third world ready for exploitation. Looking back on history usually gives you pretty accurate insights into what's going on now. Nothing much changes.

Although Alex gave the common 'conspiracy' (if you even want to call it that) theory, the historical answer would be Leninism, in which the the Soviet Union made it their goal to spread Communism to the entire world for it is only then (it is theorized) that Communism can really succeed. Search 'Leninism' on google for a better description of the whole theory/history.

their meddlings in afghanistan were much more devastating to them then their meddlings in the middle east. i don't really know much about soviet history. i'm surprised they held together as long as they did.

No conspiracy about it. I'm just old enough to remember exactly the same speeches being made about the "war on communism" as I hear being made today about the "war on terror".
the historical answer would be Leninism, in which the the Soviet Union made it their goal to spread Communism to the entire world for it is only then (it is theorized) that Communism can really succeed.
Leninism was abandoned around 1924. Certainly the idea was long dead before Stalin emerged as leader.

Soviet Union had enough of its own oil resources, but converting middle east countries to communism would harm capitalist part of the world. Afghans were just one of the many victims of the cold war.
