I'm gonna be getting usb fans for my shoeboxes once fruiting beings
    #20586751 -

a few questions. Should I just put the fans inside with the air blowing the opposite direction of the cakes, so it doesn't dry them out but still have airflow

How many holes in the shoebox should I put on each side?

After I inoculate the jars. How long does it stay in my darkness bins before I have to begin terranium preparation?

thanks a bunch=

did you do any research first?
you should try a sgfc which means 1/4 inch holes spaced 2 inches apart on all six sides of a tote(not shoebox)with 4-5 inches of perlite elevated so air can pass through under and up, it never needs to stay inthe darkness, ambient light is perfectly fine just not direct/intense

Are you saying a plastic shoebox is not a good choice? If so are the fans neeeded?

The size really depends on how many cakes you will be fruiting. 66 Qts is a fairly common size. Even with a set up like a green house that can work well with fans I wouldn't suggest using USB fans. I tried them in my GH for a while. I burned out 2 of them in less than a month.

The fan investment is cheap,  but do I place it in the terranium facing the cakes or away?

the SGFC in my picture is a 27QT . and yes shoeboxes are a nono. how do u plan on putting 4-5 inches of perlite + cakes + have room for them to grow.

and shoeboxes are cardboard. what happens to cardboard when it gets wet? the humidity would in the end, destroy your shoebox

it will dry them out. you need a constant supply of fresh air but you want it to be passive. if you had a fan in a little box with a cake all day it would dry so fast. the box is to small to hold any real humidity while the fan is blowing. you need a decent sized fruiting chamber that can hold the proper amount of perlite for humidity while allowing fresh air in and space for the mushrooms to grow.

its really simple to grow mushrooms now with all the information available. i hate to be a cookie cutter advocate but just follow to PF tek with a SGFC for your first time and read alot during that grow until you understand whats going on
