auto-fanning idea.

lemme know if I'm outta my head to have this idea.... I need an automatic way to fan my terrarium for a weekend, so I've been considering what to do. I have an extra computer (it's been stripped of all vital components) and all I want to use the computer is to run just one case fan. this is how... I want to cut a hole in my terrarium cover it with vent-filters and mount the case fan in the hole and put the computer on a timer..... think this would work? I know it's jury-rigged, but... if it would work, how often do you think I would have to run the fan, and for how long? would it be worth it to have an in-take and out-take fan? thx, peace out! -protocoldroid

Ahh something i can help with....i dunno how good that would work but take the power supply out of the computer...not u have a 12 volt (and 5 volt) dc source...use that to power that fan(just is neater) i did this for the ozone generator i made to fan out the ozone...ps that fan ought to have a plug on it to go right in the power supply but if it has a two prong plug... cut of the plug...strip wires...put the black wire in the four prong male plug from the power supply(p/s) into the hole that is conected to the black wire..(i used the big plug you know for the hard drives u can use the little ones just harder or you can also cut off a plug on the power supply and wire either black to the black fan wire) then the red one(fan wire) goes to either red or yellow...you see one is 5 volts and one is 12 the black is just ground...if you hook it up to the yellow see how fast it runs...then hook it to the red one,use the fastest one(thats twelve) of course it wouldnt hurt to run it on 5 if you dont need it full blast...reply with any questions im sure i explained it very confusedly...

Interesting idea. When in doubt, hook up an air filter to your setup. You can get one at any pet/fish store. Hook it up to a timer, or, if you have a larger setup, run it 24/7. This is assuming you're using perlite. Another way to kill two birds with one stone is to use a cool-mist humidifier on a timer. Each time it turns on, it also produces an air exchange.

Have it run long enough to displace all there air in your terrarium. Just a simple calculation involving your fans cfm rate. Then just turn it on 3-5 times a day for that amount of time.

do you think you could post the formula, i'm definately not a math wizard -- but I know enough algebra to use a formula ;P anyways.... could I just make an approximation, it's a small terrarium (5 gallon, didn't want to cut up my big terrarium, plus I don't have much casing ready atm so consolidate it is, probably easier for the tiny fan too) and a 3.5" fan, would it be harmful to run it for too long/too often? I have a cool-mist humidifier on it, but... I don't trust it. I've left home with just that on (on a timer) and came back home to contaminated shrooms. maybe just coincidence, but... I've been a constant fanner ever since and have had good luck in my terrariums. thx for the help, peace out! -protocoldroid

Hey dude volume=length X width:):) that will tell you how many cubic feet of air you need to displace with the little fan.

Re: the fan question Has anyone ever used their cool mister/ultrasonic mister WITHOUT WATER to pump air? I have an old one I got in a garage sale that I'm not using.

Go to wal-mart buy a fish pump stick 1 end of the hose in threw the lid and let it pump. I run 1 24/7 w/ no problems (and there is no math involved)

kewl. fish pump sounds like a good idea, depending on the cost :P prolly cheap enough anyhow. I like the no-math thing too :) heheh. I just couldn't figure out how much air the fan moves / sec. ended up smoking too much too pot last night to trust myself to cut through thick plastic without mangling myself/my terrarium, so I decided to have my girlfriend fan the terrarium for me, hopefully she'll be a good replacement psuedo-mycologist :) thanks for the help though, I still would like to have the fanning process automated, it would be wikkid convenient. peace out! -protocoldroid
