Hendrix Is Overrated
    #20289521 -

Or should I say, the most overrated guitarist of all time (maybe Clapton is more overrated though).  Don't get me wrong, he was/is awesome and the best of his time, bar none.  However, probably most, if not all famous/popular guitarists since the 80s can play shit that would have Hendrix shitting himself.  Yes, he laid the foundation for all future guitarists, but the apprentice has surpassed the teacher.

Examples:

The list goes on... Malmsteen, Blackmore, Randy Rhoads, EVH, SRV....

Hendrix was in a league of his own with his brilliant chord voicings and psychedelic rhythms. Plus he had such an awesome way of transposing songs into his own style on top of that he also could get tons of different tones out of his guitar with the limited equipment they had back then. However at the same time he'd probably would agree with you about being overrated. You can't really compare who is better than who though, way too subjective.

But if you really want to get into the whole who is the most badass player, I'd say Django Reinhardt. That man could play amazing rhythms with just two fingers and that was way before 50s rock n roll. Or Nick MacCabe, his soundscapes that he made early on with The Verve is just pure magic.

And then there's Rory Gallagher who had a brilliant sense of rhythm and Steve Marriott who is always over looked.

If you're only concerned with who has the fastest fingers, I agree there're are better players.  But if you're talking about creativity, beauty, and groundbreaking guitar music and technique, you couldn't be more wrong.

I've loved Hendrix music since about 3rd grade,  but over the last 5 years I've been learning to play some  Hendrix songs, and I have to say learning his songs has left me more impressed than ever with the things he was doing, whether that be the use of grace notes, his chord progressions, or the way he would mix styles of music.  Think of Manic Depression, for example.  That song is a blues song but it's also a waltz.  And it works so well.

There is so much more going on in his music than hundreds of hammer on pull offs.

I say Hendrix was a pioneer for some of the things he did, but I don't think he's the greatest guitarist ever. His style is unique and all, but there are tons of people out there that could have Hendrix "shitting himself". They all probably learned how to play from his music tho..

I feel Hendrix was appreciated for HOW he played, not so much WHAT he played. Like he only has a handful of good songs (imo). He's a very influential guitarist rightfully so, but he is also over rated.

And agreed, Django Reinhardt was so much better he could have taught Hendrix a bunch of a new tricks. Once you start dabbling with jazz, you're in a whole other league of music.

Much better than Hendrix, and from the same time period, John McLaughlin was also a BEAST on guitar, and much more diverse than Hendrix, yet much more under rated in the opinion of "the masses". The musician or guitarist circles would agree McLaughlin was much more accomplished, though. For example, McLaughlin mastered various worldly genres of guitar. Classical Indian, Jazz, Spanish/Flamenco, Prog. and so on. He's the worlds greatest living guitartist, in my opinion. He was so fucking good and inspirational in Classical Indian music, that Lakashimi Shankar tributed one of his albums to McLaughlin. That's pretty cool.

Mahavishnu Orchestra

Shakti

John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia

Basically, Hendrix is a "listeners-guitarist". And Reinhardt, McLaughlin and other technical guitarists are more of the "musicians/guitarists-guitarist". In my opinion..

agreed, above poster.

plus, Jimi always established that he wasn't by far the best guitarist, or anything, and that he was just trying something new, and that says something.

people will usually say "omg, but Jimi."

no. Jimi even knew something himself that most people don't get. he's a musician and a genius one at that (though no needs to keep jabbering about him years after his death, when there is SOO MUCH music out there, but the public only selects a sum few to pump out constant with platitudes "so and so are the best". no one is "the best" and Jimi knew that.)
Jimi was most importantly a revolutionary, which still somehow artificially satisfies people to preen about him all the time well others are actually exploring music of the same (or mayhaps different) influence, and seeing through the germ of popularity that is the "mainstream" artists that we all know and preen about all the time.

Jimi also knew though that while he was a great musician, he also wasn't as great a guitarist, not that great. (not the best)

there is so many levels to musical endevor that i think most people will never fully understand the scope of how much genius is spread among the ranks, ALL ranks. that's what Jimi saw. everyone's different and something new... most people forget this.

The concept of "best guitar player" is dumb.
Jimi was a pioneer, artist, and in my opinion a musical genius.
Who gives a flying fuck about technical ability?
the sound that reaches my ears is what matters
and Jimis sound is not overrated

"Best Guitarist" is very vague. Being more specific like "most accomplished", "most influential" etc.. is another story and worthy of a fun, educational debate.

Jimi's music is cool and he did some wild things. But the blues rock genre had been played to hell already, so "musical genius", I have to disagree and say this is an example of Jimi being considered overrated.

Who gives a fuck about technicality? Musicians trying to expand boundaries. Who doesn't? Non musicians who just want to passively listen to music. There are many music genres out there where the music is considered more than just simple, passive entertainment. Jimi Hendrix is not one of those genres.

And of course, if you focus ONLY on technically, you're just going to get a head ache. Thats why bands like DragonForce suck cack.

To each their own though

ya it is. it's overrated because it's old and square and it's only cause it fits neatly in your holes that you and everyone worship the dude. he'd probably say "now whoa man, there's a lot of great music out there, don't just listen to me and Pink Floyd and The Who, man"; and now even more then Jimi's time, it's even more relevant because of just how much good there is (after so much time, trends, have come and gone and anti-trend, and "the new" sounds and the "old sounds" that have been incorporated into the general repertoire of musician's understanding, and the "retro" sounds, and the  "ancient" sounds and the "cultural" sounds that come back from whence they came into the cultural sphere of music.)

but so many people limit themselves to listening to to few music that already, every one knows... it's a waste for the people who actually have interests beyond what is the "props" or (as you call them) "geniuses", as it were, for all the rest of the greats that come after them, that most you people say "oh well, it's not as good as" then go onto say how "it just doesn't have that 'sound'" that old sound, or that certain sound, that we all fuckin' know already.

i agree and jimi is probably the most influential guitarist to guitarist today at least IMO

Honestly how can you say a guitarist who most other guitarist will say they admired, were influenced by, or at the very least respected is overrated? thats just doesnt make sense to me. i believe jimi earned every last bit of recognition he gets. Not just his guitar playing is beautiful, but also his lyrics are pretty damn choice. Hes a whole package musician that i do say was a "musical genius"

Technical ability IS overrated, i complete disagree with that statement that only "Non musicians who just want to passively listen to music" dont care about technical ability. Not that i dont enjoy a more technical inclined genre of music, i just like groove and feel over technically ability. Like reggae for example, they can take 2 chords and make a song that is pleasing to listen to. that in my mind is something to be noted. Listen to "crazy baldheads" and "running away". its the same two chords for each song and each one has a completely different vibe

and FWIW i think Dragonforce's studio work is actually not bad. the fact that they cant play their music live however does make them suck cack.

Don't get me wrong, I still listen to some Hendrix every now and then. I just take "Hendrix was a musical genius" as complete hyperbole. He was great, just not genius level. He was a huge acid head so of course he had some interesting thoughts, but that doesnt make him a genius in music.

Technical ability is actually underrated. Look at your television/radio.. The most praised "artists" are the most mediocre. Numbers don't mean shit these days.

That's why I can "say a guitarist who most other guitarist will say they admired, were influenced by, or at the very least respected is overrated".

And what I mean about passively listening is, the musician is typically the one that will actively listen to a song note to note, measure to measure, beginning to end, focusing on the technicality. The song in it's entirety. Not just "oh here comes the chorus... then the verse, oh and then "Excuse me, while I kiss the sky".."

I appreciate a musician/band by albums, not individual songs. Jimi has a lot of hit or miss songs that sound that same. His voice is very one dimensional to me by the end of his albums.

But of course he influenced a lot of people, like I said before  "rightfully so", but my point is musical genius is a bit much. He was good though, obviously.

Oh and DragonForce, in the studio, record at half tempo so everything is super tight. Fuckin lame ass band. THAT is focusing on just technicality. "We need to record the album at half speed, because it's so 'hard', and we need to get it right!".... Laaame.

I respect yall enjoy some Hendrix though! He's dope. I think my point has been made..  :icouldjusteatyou:

If Hendrix comes on the radio I'll listen to it.  Some of it is pretty good.  If I seek to be blown away by guitar I will go to Roy Buchanan first.  Al D and Paco?  Hell fuck yeah.  We lost a great one the other day
