So who do you think is the most amazing guitarist ever?
I mean amazing in general.

Hows bout this guy?

I just wonder what you people think about this.
The idea that this guy actually may be the greatest guitarist ever for those who appreciate pure skill.

Just wanted people who have not seen him to check it out, and also wanted your opinions, videos etc.

Don't like him.

He's got loads of technical skills but i just think he's so boring, it just sounds like noodling nonsense; it sounds like loads of technique and theory.

fair to say i don't "get it"

Sounds boring to me also. Where is the rhythm and the soul?

He's still around?  I had a few albums with him on them, Bill Bruford solos.  I was not exactly blown away.  My vote still goes to Roy Buchanan.  Zappa could play as could Al Dimeola, Steve Hackett, Steve Howe, Robin Trower, Leo Kottke.

My dad let me borrow a Chad Wackerman & Allen Holdsworth album a few weeks ago called Forty Reasons. It's really great stuff, if you are into fusion at all. I can respect it and do enjoy it because of his virtuosity, but it is strange stuff no doubt.

My dad saw him play at a little jazz/fusion club in Hollywood called The Baked Potato a few weeks ago, he said it was amazing. the lineup was:
ALLAN HOLDSWORTH on GUITAR
JIMMY JOHNSON on BASS
CHAD WAKERMAN on DRUMS

Can you really beat a show like that? Steve Lukathur and Danny Carey were in the audience as well . This was in a club that holds no more than 50 people, such a great place.

I don't like it at all.

It's too chaotic, I can't feel any emotion from it, and I can't connect with it whatsoever.

He is extremely skilled, I am not doubting that, but yes, it seems like he is lacking in soul. All technique and no feeling it seems

Some people find this to be Very trippy and visual/colorful to say the least.
#1.  you kind of have to really like jazz to even understand it.
#2. not everyone likes such intense artwork.  This is serious shit and its not something to "chill out" to.
#3. Its the trippiest fucking thing I have ever heard.  Its all about musical space and the possible shapes contained within, which definitely lends its self to musicians more than anyone else.
#4 It resembles visuals.  It is very visual.  But not all people can really see that space or the organism that is music.
#5  Its all math and how math converts into emotion.  In this case the emotion is hardly human and difficult to recognize.
Its more mystical, universal and alien.
#6 where is the soul?  Its everywhere, and this is an expression of how art doesnt have to be straight forward in order for some people to appreciate it.  This is some very "out there" shit, and it means something to me.  It does sound like a shitload of notes to the untrained ear.  Yes, to the untrained ear/mind.
It also sounds like multicolored alien structures.  Like musical architecture that not everyone can hear.
#7  Its as alien as it gets.  This guy is not going to bother playing my guitar gently weeps.  Thats just not what he gets off on or else he would be doing that(very well), so that he can prove that he has soul too.........lol
#8  He is sort of proving the point that all music is math and all bands exude emotion through the same routers.
His routers are less commonly used.  Nobody cares about the pure math anymore.
#9  Some people think john coltrane (acid head), was all about just fucked up collections of notes.  Its sad to say, thats just not true, and the same goes for allen.
#10  NOBODY who understands and "sees" this stuff expects everyone to like it.
It is however sad to see that such a beautiful mind goes unseen, just because he is this weird.

He is all about shape and space, not gut wrenching yet common human emotions, and its all very psychedelic to me.
Next time you are trying to understand a wood grain or something, listen to him and his musical words create the shapes and structures of the reality we live in, and weaves in and out of every node of reality.

Its More real than anything.

DOnt give up on this strange shit.  It has plenty of emotion, Just a different kind.

For those of you who "dont like it at all".
Perhaps it is you that lacks the type of soul that finds his music to be amazing and gutwrenching.
He is coltrane on guitar.
Its the most psychedelic thing I have ever seen.
Van halen's Fav.  Frank zappa's fav.
And most people just think its all skill and no soul?  No recognizable soul to be found?

So what do you people think of ravi shankar.
Wheres the soul in his music?

Just my observations.  Im not telling anyone they are stupid if they dont find this music to be attractive.

Being a huge fan of Bruford, I discovered Alan from his appearances on his solo work and love what he did. I hear a lot of feeling in his playing. A lot of his work was from a time when technology was the avenue to explore and he tried a lot of new techniques including the synthaxe. I'll have to find the track, but he goes crazy and changes sounds throughout the solo. It's like pre-buckethead jazz.

This is what hurt Alan in my opinion. "Simple music" was becoming a lot more popular in his days and that's what some could say hurt him. He required a technical rhythm section and I feel Bruford offered him the best, but the Holdsworth albums are all still amazing.

I hate that I live so far from that place. I would go to every show there. My friend went to one of the Volto shows and said it was insane to sit only a few feet away from Carey. And the jam sessions they have, oh man.

Yeah the 'greatest guitarist ever' is pushing it with Holdy.

I'm going to try and not get off-topic but,

I think it's almost impossible for me to feel 'soul' from a solo musician. Since the idea of a soul relies on the body it's very necessary to assume a body is required to feel the soul in one's playing.

In this case the rhythm section.

I can listen to those YouTube videos and recognize talent, but the soul isn't  there TO ME because of the playing-over-a-jam-track-in-the-studio.

To each their own right?

Watching those guys play I just wish they would stop and sustain a note for a few measures.

Arguing jazz is like arguing religion. I consider myself a fan of jazz, but it would be hell to listen to some styles. I'm also a fan of rock, but I don't listen to a lot of rock bands.

What other guitarists top your list?
