That's pretty good - hadn't heard it before.

For some serious guitar wankery, check out:

Buckethead on Praxis : Warszawa : Saturn (3rd track)

Meshuggah (not sure of the guitarists name) : i
This is a 20 min. song (ep), the good guitar solos are around 5:30 (fucking insane) and 12:30.

There's plenty more, but those are two that immediately stick out in my mind.

Other talented guitarists (warning, serious cheese ahead):

Micheal Angelo
Fool from Dragonforce
Yngwie Malmsteen

Playing real fast scales isn't that impressive.

Talented, best, whatever. You can't honestly say that Alexi is more talented then a guitarist like Chuck Schuldiner or John Petrucci, let alone a number of guitarist outside of the genre. I know it's all a matter of opinion, but still. You also speak of Fredrik Thordendal as if he has nothing on Alexi. Have you actually heard him play before? That guy can fucking shred.

I second Big Dave Gilmour.

I would take the following 3 over any of those shred wankers:
Neil Young
Jerry Garcia
Duane Allman

I suppose they can't play 30 notes per second, but they make for much more enjoyable listening. Those other guys really know their fretboards though, that's for sure.

john petrucci is the man

alexi is good like yngwie is good... they're good for playing a couple scales and arpeggios in a couple different patterns at blazing speeds.. but they limit themselves to one 'sound' and don't get as creative as guys like vai, petrucci, or satriani.. etc.. etc.. etc.. but they are all good at what they do.

Rhoads was obviously one of the best. brother..

Dimebag..

not for everybody's taste i suppose, but he's got more soul than any of those fretboard ejaculation wankers people always boast about.

Mike McCready from Pearl Jam
Jimi Hendrix of course

NO...its very impressive and its hard to do
they are so fast on the fret board
not to many can go as fast during a solo as Alexi
and if people cant do it
then its hard
and you must be talented to do it
and when a talented person is freakin out, going fast on their axe..
im impressed

alex laiho is really good in my opinion, not only in the fast playing stuff, i like his style. The best? Haha, there's no such thing like a ''best guitarist''.

I can play real fast/clear/shred stuff myself so i dont listen for this in a guitarist. I like fast/shred stuff with style, emotions anf feelings, alex laiho defitivly have this.

I like guitarists that you can identify only with a couple of notes, like zakk wild, he's not a great virtuoso but he got musical identity. And, it's all a question of taste, if you like a musisian identity or not. So ''whos the best'' is highly subjective.

Marty friedman, both is solo records (dragons kiss , HELL YEAH!!) and megadeth ones really blow me away, then again, i can play everything he do note for note, but damn, this guy is beyond good.

Same goes for the edge (U2). EVERYBODY, even my little sister can play his stuff, but hehe, this guy has contributed to the modern guitar sound without doing any solo and we can say ''ahhh this guy sounds like u2, lots of delay you know''

By the way, other shreding machines :  the guys from : sonata arctica, angra, symphony x, stratovarius.. well there's alot ! look for the band Dream Evil, the first two album, the guitarist on there is really cool, Shred passage and 1980 metal feelings hehe yeah!

Othere less shred guitarists i admire : the edge, jimmy page, the guy from the tea party, green day(yes) , genesis.. the list goes on and on.. the dudes from Iron maiden.. kirk hammet from metallica! Not because it's easy to play that it's bad.. Rock music isnt all about solos and techninche, well not any kind of music is all about that

Anyone who likes buckethead shopuld check out his live album with Jonas Helborg 'Octave of The Holy Innocents'

As for the most talented guitarists
in random order

Brett Garsed
Shawn Lane
Mattias IA Eklundh
Alejandro Silva
Gon?alo Pereira
Michael Lee Firkins

I'm a blues/rock guy, so I'll name a couple of my favorites (all amazing guitarists):

Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Duane Allman
and of course, Jimi

But, to name the most skilled, here's a couple of guys that probably in the Top 5 for best guitarists in the world:

John McLaughlin
Paco de Lucia

Some of them. You heard Roy? You've clearly heard Frank. I got a 3 album vinyl set that is just his solos called "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar" He can rip with the best of them. He also transcends the "mechanical" nature of most speed merchants. As does Mr. Buchanan. That's my idea of talent, not just how many notes you can cram into a measure.

john frusciante has more soul than any of the guitarists you guys have mentioned.

primarily in regards to his records as a solo artist (not as chili pepper). He can molest the fretboard, but his true soulfulness and emotion is transcended through his incredibly unique and distinct chord progressions.

and speaking of zappa, john frusciante was actually a HUGE zappa freak as a teen, and was offered a spot in Zappa's band...but of course he met Flea right around that time, started jamming with the peppers and the rest is history. i honestly think Flea and John are just about the most unique, soulful, and melodic bass/lead combo out there.

now if they could just feed anthony keidis enough acid for him to have an extraordinary ego loss  :smirk:

I've listened to john fruscianate's solo albums.

I like them, but have to be in the right mood. I usually prefer many of the other gutarists mentioned, and there are definately better technical guitarists.

But, as has been mentioned many times - just having the ability to play guitar like the devil doesn't mean you'll make good records.

yeah i know what you mean about needing "to be in the right mood" to enjoy his music. alot of people won't even give his rougher albums a chance (Niandra Lades and Smile From The Streets You Hold) because some of those songs were recorded during his times of heroin addiction, and usually features john screaming. painful stuff. to quote a reviewer from Pitchfork, listening to 'Smile' is like "staring into a man's soul without sunglasses on. hard shit."

everyone comes from a different place in life and thus has their own unique tastes and preference. i personally love john frusciante's music because it simply affects and communicates with a very raw emotional and spiritual part of my being.

I think jazz guitarists are probably the most talented. They know theory up the ass and shred like beasts.
my list:
Joe Pass
Kurt Rosenwinkel
Django Reinhardt
Kenny Burrell
Wes Montgomery
Grant Green

Django for fuckin sure.

There's a reason Metal guitarists tries to imitate the big 3:

Hendrix
Page (feel free to interchange Beck or Clapton here)
Gilmour

because their playing and musicianship defined the Hard Rock and Progressive Rock Genres. Which pretty much are the roots of the modern rock.

It's been a looooooong time since anybody with that level musical talent has made it big.

definitely agree with all the aforementioned artists. Some current guitarists that I think are worth mentioning are Paul Waggoner and Dustie Warring of Between the Buried and Me. Also to switch it up Nick Drake was amazing. He may not have been a crazy shredder but he was an extremely talented player.

I prefer guitarists who can write good riffs/arrangements as opposed to just pure shred/technique. I could list a bunch... but here's a lesser known guy with a lot of shit up on youtube, really good mix of black metal/technique.

If the discussion was about style I would say Jack White. No matter how much he hides his messy playing in distortion, misses notes and plays barre chords, he's still got more style than 99% of those shredders who just play really fast scales.

Playing fast does not make you a great.

His soloing work with The Raconteurs is amazing. Check out the live version of "Blue Veins".

I'm a big fan of barre chords and two finger voicings in general. Lot's of standard jazz voicings sound like shit anyways, so it's often refreshing to hear somebody play a clean two finger voicing.

Django Reinhardt's entire career was built around two finger jazz voicings (because he only had two working fingers on his left hand due to a fire related injury), and he's considered by all guitar enthusiasts to be one of the masters of jazz guitar.

WOW.

Well, like everyone in this thread has been saying, technical ability doesn't really equate to talent, nor musicianship.

Frankly, the Paganini inspired guitarists out there seem to be the most boring to listen to.

I want to hear a guitarist who was inspired by the late works of Beethoven, or by Franz Liszt.

While I generally have to conclude the Malmsteens' work is often too technical for it's own good, his earlier stuff (much of which is built around themes and variations of Bach) is musically quiet good. I only wish guitarists of his calibre could get out of baroque-era composing.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the really fast scales and arpegios metal thingy, though i do like metal, and kinda like alexi laiho. Though grew bored of bodom somewhat.

Btw i hate the notion metalheads often have of metal being "the fastest and hardest" is plain BS - Jazz, Flamenco, Classical, even Rock all have their Tech and Speed demons - if you don't believe me then i believe you don't have a large repetoire of aural stimulation. so much of it is just repetition, too all guitarists, you'll be surprised what you can do by just doing it slow, building up, and practising one solo set of notes over and over.

You may even be able to shred them within a day or two with never shredding before - its just motor-function-memory, and finger exercising (ok not everyone has the fleet-fingers for it, but its how alot of guitarist get by). Its not great for off the cuff, its means your limited to just that solo or two - but it can be impressive nonetheless. Keep doing that, and keep up your knowledge of the modes and patterns that work for you and there, you're a shredder - I'm not trying to downplay it, because to a certain degree that is a bit of dedication. I used to be into that trying to be like alexi and yngwie, but now i'm more into feel..

As for some of my favs. Check out als fancy work around 2:40 - thats on acoustic, fuck! And Paco on the classical not long after.. and johns... omg. Fuck they're amazing. And they're still able to put some feeling into it.

^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Al Di Meola
Paco De Lucia
John McLaughlin
--------------

I also love the feel that John Frusciante (earlier stuff more preferable) has.
Buckethead is a shred demon.
Muhammed Suiçmez - necrophagist (what the fuck is he up to? - sounds weird, but i like it)
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
to name a few

Jimi Hendrix.

you guys should check out his live performances from late 1970. really indescribable, and strangely under appreciated. like Jimi was getting into advanced Jazz and Flamenco. Classical music such as Bach was even influencing him at that point, his sound was just alien but so earthy and natural.
when people think Hendrix they rarely look past the studio singles or him burning his guitar, unfortunately.

live at LA Forum is incredible. you guys should check out youtube videos of him playing at Berkeley (Johnny B Goode!) as well as Rainbow Bridge (New Rising Sun is a must see). like I really don't think anybody's touched him since he left us, but I've heard a ton of stuff most haven't.

Keith Richards
John Frusciante
Tom Morello
Eddie Van Halen
Shawn Lane
Randy Rhoads

Michelangelo Batio
Yngwie Malmsteen
Theodore Ziras

So fucking many...

Alexi Laiho is definitely not even close to the best guitarist ever or most talented, either way you spin it.

First off, to be the best guitarist ever, you must be able to shred, and your music must be amazing to the general population.

Alexi can indeed shred peoples faces off, but his music isn't amazing to the general population. Alexi isn't even big in the entirety of the metal scene. Everyone respects him because he rips, but he's a douche. Besides, from what I hear, he is sloppy live and one dimensional anyways. However the one dimensional aspect is hard to believe seeing as he plays metal which is a fusion between hard rock, classic rock, classical, jazz, and even blues.

Based on the above reasons, I definitely would not give him a 10/10 rating, a.k.a. the best. I feel inclined to give him a 9/10, mainly because his songs aren't catchy enough and are mainly composed of guitar masturbation. Not to mention CoB's lead vocals sound like a fucking weirdo. But back to Alexi... Sure he can shred. He can shred way harder than Jimi Hendrix could ever even shred. However, Jimi Hendrix is overall better because his songs sound much, much, better and Jimi invented techniques. What did Alexi invent besides a signature guitar and some mediocre, slightly above average at best songs.

Anyways I am done with my Alexi bashing, although I truely do respect Alexi as a musician and don't mind listening to his music in short periods of time. There's way too much better metal out in the sea. There are bands that I listen to and enjoy more that don't even normally solo. (Ex. Stick To Your Guns)

But one thing is for sure he should ditch the faggot black finger paint.

I have to give a nod to Davey Graham though, his style is probably one of the most purely musical styles caught on recording.

Ok...?

I guess I don't get how you can compare Davey Graham and Joe Pass. The styles are completely different.

Or were you talking about Sentient6's video?

No I meant your video.  Davey Graham played a jazz standard on solo guitar.  Joe Pass also plays jazz standards on solo guitar, including that song.  Except Joe Pass can keep multiple melodies going at one time so he doesn't have to cut out the bass notes to have some silly little solo then return to playing chords.  He does them all at one time.  Thus I thought the guy you posted was not noteworthy  Granted I base this only off that one video, so he might be better than I think I am just saying that video was unimpressive at best.

The styles are completely different. And I'm still really confused as to why you would try and compare the two.

It's kind of like comparing Apples and Oranges by the common denominator that they are both fruit.

Different strokes fer different folks I suppose.

Jari maenpaa From Wintersun is one of the best guitarists out there in my opinion but Valfar from Windir is the best musician! He was a genius.. R.I.P. Valfar!
