rolling stone top 100 guitarists

http://www.rollingstone.com/features/coverstory/featuregen.asp?pid=1917

ive barely heard the allman brothers mentioned before, where do i start if i want to check out some guitar work?

looks like a good, rather unusual list, but it has gilmour all the way down at 82, whatashame.

and are there any other recommendations off that list? my fav. guitar tunes are p.funk's maggot brain, the dead's dark star, floyd's shine on and comfortably numb, maiden's afraid to shoot strangers and hallowed be thy name, and barret's baby lemonade.
ooh, and actually anything by jay j, if anyone here is into deephouse.

Try "Eat a Peach" by the Allman Brothers or live at the Fillmore East!

Jerry Garcia is ranked #13 behind Keith Richards LOL how funny! I like Keith but he can't hold a candle to Jerry.
God Dickie Betts is number 58 too low!
John Cipollina is way down at 32!

I really don't agree with the order but oh well!

Man, every list I see he's in the top quarter. SO over-rated. He did spawn an entire style and grunge culture, but his solo on Teen Spirit is NOT special.

NO FUCKING WAY. I HATE that guy's music, HE is also terribly overrated. HOW? how can he be up that high? OH, cuz he's popular....
fuckin terrible....

And where the hell is Steve Vai and Joe Satriani??

I can't belive frank zappa is so low on the list. The order of this list was clearly not made by lovers of music.

actually i hated jack white's music alot at first.. right now i really like it- imo its not just baseless popularity

cobain was able to mesh his guitaring into a v interesting sound, not many good guitarists are able to come close to that

vai and satriani, i believe, are very good heavy metal guitarists..

why do you people bother critiqueing rolling stone lists , or even lists of anything thats the "best"

I agree, the list is bunk!

Some of these guys are not even lead guitar players.

I think that list is pretty decent.I think they suceeded in meshing technical profiency with "style" and inventiveness pretty well, they just got the order all wrong.

I'm glad they got Eddy Hazel from Funkadelic.IMHO is underrated as hell. I'm also glad they got Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth.

Kurt Cobain,Jack White, and Johnny Remone should have been lower and Frank Zappa,David Gilmour, and Robert Fripp should have been higher.
They totally left out Curt from the Meatpuppets and Joe Satriani.

If you want to hear some of the most incredible guitar harmonies ever recorded, listen to In Memory Of Elibeth Reed.

BTW,I think my favorite solo of all time is George Harrison's on Taxman. That shit makes me cream my pants.

Does anyone else find it hilarous that magazines come up with "greatest of ALL TIME" and then 2 weeks later while make another list, same topic, different order/people and proclaim THAT "OF ALL TIME". What the hell is up with "OF ALL TIME"? Did they travel in the future and listen to every album that ever came out?

I love Nirvana, and I think the White Stripes are pretty good, but there is no way those bands are known for their guitar work.

I think Mike McCready from Pearl Jam is an under-rated guitarist. He's not the most inovative guitarist, but his live work is just incrediable. Listen to the solo on the version of Black on "Live On Two Legs", or when Pearl Jam covered "Little Wing". Amazing stuff.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

they seem it to me anyway
i dont care about his technical proficiency- thats crap to me
his use of guitar, however, was something else

It was Paul McCartney who played and wrote the solo on Taxman. He did loads of great lead guitar work, like on Good Morning, Strawberry Fields etc.

They're taking the piss with Jack White. What has he contributed to guitar playing? And The Fucking Edge at 24? Stop wearing those stupid hats, you bald tit.

I reckon Zappa, Jeff Beck, Page, Fripp, Gilmour and TOWNSHEND should be higher.

Hendrix is always gonna win these things. And what about Noel Gallagher??!

Does anyone think that Robbie Robertson should be on the list? I would easily take him over some of the wankers that are on it.

Fuck Rolling Stone, that list is shit. John McLaughlin 49, Steve Howe 69, David Gilmour 82, and no Alex Lifeson anywhere. Thats why I haven't bought their magazine in 10 years, because it's nothing but garbage. The day they go out of business I'm throwing a party.

I think Ben Lacy belongs on that list, but few have heard his work. You can check out some of his music at http://www.benlacy.com but there are only a few short clips, not quite like seeing him live.
