Go to a Dead show.
1-2 hours prior to the show injest 500-2000mcg. LSD :gd_icon:

If a Dead show isn't available go out and by one of the Dicks picks CD's)preferably a 70's show). Eat 500mcg. of LSD and lie on back and listen.
Folow every note and let go. You will realize the music is a guide. Its raw, new, and spontanous and will help sweep your ego off your feet and you will fall into a ocean of love were you float  gently down the stream as each note carry's you further.

The key to Dead music is their live music. A band being played by a higher energy and that energy pouring out from above into the crowd till we all dissolve into one ball of love that rolls into eternity. Its a mass religous experiance never seen on a scale like this anywere in human history.

Since Jerry Died the good shows are fewer and fewer. For a begining I would suggest the live experiance through the Dicks Picks series. There are 26 of these  and they each contain 3-4 cds of live concert music. I will add some suggested shows later as I hope others will to. Something old with a St. Stephen>eleven and Dark Star. Trust me take the LSD and listen to this music fir 3  or 4 hours in a safe enviroment and I asure you that you'll be left with your mouth on the floor in amazement.

There not the best at what they do, There the only ones that do what they do.-Bill Graham. :gd_icon:

Luv it

i don't get how mediocre songwriters need to get so much attention. what is so special about them then? anyone who is playing music live, better damn well put on a fluid set... otherwise what's the point?

again, i still don't get what makes them so high and mighty in this community... seems like slacking to me. find a band everyone likes, boom, you are most likely a deadhead now because who else do people here "bond over"? not much else, that's for sure.

but whatever, i just don't see the appeal. it's like if someone told me Rick Astley was just legit good music and hey i just need to be there. but i'm an asshole.

if you don't see the appeal that's fine, but get lost with the ridiculous claims of "it's nothing more than drugs". i think we've established you've never been to one of their shows at this point and so you really can't have any input on the matter of their live "scene". it's all about the atmosphere. similarly when i engage in an aya circle, it's not about "drugs". It's about everything. The people, the music, the drugs, the communion, the message, etc. And while some parts might not be much on their own (ie your feelings towards their music) the collective experience is the reason people enjoy it. i have the same feelings about drinking alone and being sober in huge groups of people as well as party music... Bring it all together it's a new atmosphere though. Now i do personally enjoy some dead songs on recording, but would put them nowhere near the pedestal as i would put my experience of a furthur show (which, in case you missed it twice, i was dead sober for).

you mentioned music ONCE in that whole diatribe.

once.

that isn't music to me... that's something entirely apart from music. it's a "scene", and that's all it is. that's why it doesn't appeal to me. No, i will not "get lost" because as it turns out... i'm closer then i thought, to being correct, it seems.

PS: Further; i don't know about that band.

I didn't say it had to appeal to you. I said it was a "scene" "atmosphere" "mini-culture" whatever you want to call it more times than i can count, so no you are not closer to being correct. You are criticizing it for not being what you want it to be (musical masturbation that appeals to some form of elitist audience), when that is not what it's all about.

Furthur = phil lesh/bob weir (dead guitarist and bassist) playing dead songs along with a couple really great covers. it's basically a way of continuing GD without Jerry Garcia.

Face it akira, you don't listen to the dead nor do you seem to have any interest in experiencing it for yourself... so why are you here telling us what they are/aren't? I'm not going to pretend it's for everyone. I don't care if you like them. But leave your outsider judgemental bs at the door if you have no interest in seeing what its about. Are you one of those people who thinks Burning Man is just about taking drugs too?

no. musical masturbation is what Grateful Dead does. see? we're clearly on opposite pages here. why an't you just accept what I AM saying? is it difficult for you for me to not think Grateful Dead is all that talented?

PS: no, i think Burning Man is about a bunch of people getting together to have a festival, to celebrate their reason to exist. which involves doing drugs; which i personally don't care for... i find it pandering; to the artists that vy to create, as opposed to celebrate. but other then that, why else get together and listen to music... to exist, and have a reason to exist. good.

Depth to who? Depth to you and me? Because the dead have got me hook line and anchored down with a bright silver chain! :laugh:They have hit me on notes that other bands didn't scrape down to quite closely enough.:peace: I love music:heart: and it is really nice to know the feeling when you find the band/music that you've been earning for, for what seems like your whole life, them it just envelopes you.

I found just what I was looking for... and I will never close my eyes on newer things ever, but I love this stuff.

i think if the drugs were "removed" then it wouldn't be "THE vibe" anymore. so hence, it's THEE drugs that provide the standard "Dead vibe". without them, you're just hearing people jamming. try it. you might be surprised how much drugs have to do with the vibe. the whole thing about a Dead show is going back to the days where everyone pretty much freely did Acid and swooned over bands because everyone was tripping.

whatever, maybe i'm wrong, but i don't see how. lots of people go to Dead shows JUST for the drugs. now you can say that they aren't going for the right reasons, but they DO IN FACT make up alot of the crowd... so how do you explain that? it's probably not important.

Having to be in a crowd to see a band seems like it just makes the band a source of ambient music for doing other stuff. It's like doing speed and going to a punk show and beating peoples' asses in the mosh pit. The music is no longer the centerpiece, but rather a contributing factor to something else.

I listen to the Dead, and other jam bands, without tripping or sober all the time. But I guess I'm into jamming... and jammin' high... heh...

i think they're a good band, i like em.

personally i try not to get too involved with any specific band, mostly because it's just music, sure sometimes it is amazingly awesome, but in the end it's just music.

with that said, i would have loved to do acid in a gd show.

ITT: People arguing about why their opinion is superior.

You can not like the Dead, that's all good, who gives a fuck. You're some guy on the internet, after all, pretty sure nobody in their right minds here gives a fuck. But if you think nobody in the Dead had any talent, try doing some of the things they've done. Really. Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean the people doing it aren't talented. It means you have disagreements in terms of taste. But fact is, Jerry actually WAS an amazing guitarist, and Phil Lesh actually was pretty damn good at bass, and all of them could feel eachother, which is what being in a band, and a jamband especially, is all about.

Acid Mothers Temple is the best jam band out there, but I think you have to be really weird to like them (sober at least).

nobodies opinion is superior.  that's why they are opinions. because they are faulty to a T.

just because i don't think GD is all that great, doesn't mean i think they have no talent. i just happen to think that say Acid Mothers Temple are better... and more interesting to me.
