Further still tours and while it's not jerry garcia, they're going strong.

Anyways, i can understand why people don't like the dead. They're not THAT good to just throw on to some speakers... But the community and the live performance (this is where they really shine) is really great. Also, one thing i've been noticing more recently is that their lyrics are brilliant. You wouldn't think so at first glance. I've listened to some songs over 30 times before a line would catch my attention and reveal the message to the entire song.

i was volunteering at a local road race a few days ago and they were playing all this goofy classic rock which i like but w/e, but then the studio version of 'Truckin' came on, i was sitting there clicking people's times off as they crossed the finish line, the whole vibes of the place just instantly became friendlier and easier to manage

I don't know.. I just can't get into them for some reason. Maybe I never will.

However, oddly enough, I've seen Darkstar Orchestra live and I loved it. Granted, I was on acid, and in the mountains of west virginia.

But Spiffy likes them a lot, I just think they are mediocre. Nothing THAT special.

but I'm open.. I'm not close minded.

change my mind please, if you can.. or want to.

The Dead can't scratch the surface of the Floyd multiverse. Quintessential experimentation and psychedelia. I can listen to Floyd albums on a loop for days. I can give the Dead about half an hour.

Totalllly different vibes. Now i will be the first to admit that Pink Floyd is one of, if not my top, favorite band of all time. But there is just no comparing the two bands. If i was at a pink floyd concert i'd probably be stoned off my ass in deep thoughts contemplating my place in society. The dead is all about liveliness and celebration of life imo. Would be a much more dance oriented vibe

Oh, well that has just been recently then. I saw them two years in a row before last summer.

so basically the sound of their music isn't important really... just the druggie atmosphere. hmmm, sorta like most EDM. funny that.

no, not what i said. atmosphere period. drugs are involved, yes, but it's not all about that. and again, the live performance is fantastic. you have to think about the dead as more of a subcultural experience than a musical group. while music is part of it, it's only a very small slice of the pie

it's not really something you can just explain to someone in words. it's just one of those things that you vibe with or you don't

anyone can go to a show and vibe. it's no different for any other band, in my opinion. the Dead just HAPPEN to have a reputation. because of drugs

to me, i need the music to be front and center to call a band "genius". like Soft Machine... or Amon Duul...
Grateful Dead is a hyped up studio band turned reputable by simple song structure and lots of acid.

have you been to a dead show? or a furthur show? i'm telling you, it's practically it's own counterculture and probably much more so back in the day. it's not about A vibe it's about THE vibe. THE dead vibe. yeah, every show has it's own vibe and the deads is particularly unique. not better, not worse, just it's own thing. either you like it or you don't but i promise you it's not just about "drugs". that's certainly part of it but not all of it.

to make a point i went to two Furthur shows dead sober and had a blast.

i think if the drugs were "removed" then it wouldn't be "THE vibe" anymore. so hence, it's THEE drugs that provide the standard "Dead vibe". without them, you're just hearing people jamming. try it. you might be surprised how much drugs have to do with the vibe. the whole thing about a Dead show is going back to the days where everyone pretty much freely did Acid and swooned over bands because everyone was tripping.

whatever, maybe i'm wrong, but i don't see how. lots of people go to Dead shows JUST for the drugs. now you can say that they aren't going for the right reasons, but they DO IN FACT make up alot of the crowd... so how do you explain that? it's probably not important.

i've never heard of anyone refer to the dead as "genius". i'm pretty sure a lot of people consider them pretty mediocre songwriters, but their live jam is very fluid.

i just said i've never taken drugs at one of their shows. in fact, i'm not even sure i've ever listened to them on drugs to be honest. mainly while driving which i do sober. i think you're right when you say "maybe i'm wrong"

i'm not going to deny that drugs have a large reputation in the "Dead scene". and i'm sure there are a lot of people rocking their shirts just to hang out with people who do drugs. you find that kind of shit everywhere. that doesn't mean that's what it's all about. that's like saying hardcore punk is all about drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon. there's much more too it but like nearly every culture in the history of man kind, yes there is a substance or two that facilitates bonding amongst it's people.

i don't get how mediocre songwriters need to get so much attention. what is so special about them then? anyone who is playing music live, better damn well put on a fluid set... otherwise what's the point?

again, i still don't get what makes them so high and mighty in this community... seems like slacking to me. find a band everyone likes, boom, you are most likely a deadhead now because who else do people here "bond over"? not much else, that's for sure.

but whatever, i just don't see the appeal. it's like if someone told me Rick Astley was just legit good music and hey i just need to be there. but i'm an asshole.

If you liked Darkstar, you basically like the Dead already... they really don't add much new to their music at all. I mean, they jam, and their jams might happen a little differently, but ultimately everythings *basically* the same.

What makes the Dead so amazing, is their live jamming. Their records can be good, too, but they're more so hit-and-miss than their live jams.

There's tons of great collections of their stuff though! Here, I'll post a few...

Youtube channel 2- not as good?
Youtube channel 3- seems legit

Having to be in a crowd to see a band seems like it just makes the band a source of ambient music for doing other stuff. It's like doing speed and going to a punk show and beating peoples' asses in the mosh pit. The music is no longer the centerpiece, but rather a contributing factor to something else.

I know a lot of people who heard the dead and it changed their lives in a positive way, They were the originators of psychadelic music and they did it with traditional songs, they just did it "their way", For me hearing the dead for the first time years ago, it changed my musical perspective and helped me get past what I felt were my " musical boundaries" at the time, I remember the first time I went and saw the dead and it was the most magical time of my life, it was amazing how kind everyone was and that for me did it.

if you don't see the appeal that's fine, but get lost with the ridiculous claims of "it's nothing more than drugs". i think we've established you've never been to one of their shows at this point and so you really can't have any input on the matter of their live "scene". it's all about the atmosphere. similarly when i engage in an aya circle, it's not about "drugs". It's about everything. The people, the music, the drugs, the communion, the message, etc. And while some parts might not be much on their own (ie your feelings towards their music) the collective experience is the reason people enjoy it. i have the same feelings about drinking alone and being sober in huge groups of people as well as party music... Bring it all together it's a new atmosphere though. Now i do personally enjoy some dead songs on recording, but would put them nowhere near the pedestal as i would put my experience of a furthur show (which, in case you missed it twice, i was dead sober for).
