alright then deadheads....
    #2310473 - 02/07/04 02:17 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

make me like the dead

I don't know.. I just can't get into them for some reason. Maybe I never will.

However, oddly enough, I've seen Darkstar Orchestra live and I loved it. Granted, I was on acid, and in the mountains of west virginia.

But Spiffy likes them a lot, I just think they are mediocre. Nothing THAT special.

but I'm open.. I'm not close minded.

change my mind please, if you can.. or want to.

See my post in the other thread. It's about much more than just the music. It's about continuity and community. The dead experience is a river flowing through time and connecting people to a shared experience...

And, they are a great "jam band" -- there aren't that many...

this could sound like a challenge :P
but i applaud your openness and willingness to like something

you shouldn't force yourself to like something if you can't get into it though, it's probably just not your thing

pap is right though, its not so much about the music

people around here might look at me wierd if they heard me playing the dead.. maybe thats common for everyone, but basically i think its addictive and fun--i am partially biased though because i grew up around it, i like it for many sentimental reasons heh

sadly i haven't seen them live(i was there at jones beach and talked to a few cool ppl there though.. hearing it from outside isnt the same though) but i would think it holds true that seeing them live makes all the difference

then again i wouldn't consider myself a huge deadhead, especially compared to everyone here :P

i just wanted to post to make a quick comment about how it's cool you have an open minded desire to like it, but i've said way too much now..

Well... I know all about the community aspect of it. Or enough, I should say. I've known quite a few deadheads and been to quite a few places where deadheads congregate. Though I've never actually been to a dead show.

God knows I've listened to people go on and on about them in this forum.
So it's more "the experience" then the music is it?

I've had some good times at this farm up in the mountains of west virginia, you camp out and jam bands play in a barn all night long. Darkstar Orchestra and Fat Apple have played there numerous times, but my favorite thus far has been Leftover Salmon. Those guys ruled... especially the banjo player.

Go to a Dead show.
1-2 hours prior to the show injest 500-2000mcg. LSD :gd_icon:

If a Dead show isn't available go out and by one of the Dicks picks CD's)preferably a 70's show). Eat 500mcg. of LSD and lie on back and listen.
Folow every note and let go. You will realize the music is a guide. Its raw, new, and spontanous and will help sweep your ego off your feet and you will fall into a ocean of love were you float  gently down the stream as each note carry's you further.

The key to Dead music is their live music. A band being played by a higher energy and that energy pouring out from above into the crowd till we all dissolve into one ball of love that rolls into eternity. Its a mass religous experiance never seen on a scale like this anywere in human history.

Since Jerry Died the good shows are fewer and fewer. For a begining I would suggest the live experiance through the Dicks Picks series. There are 26 of these  and they each contain 3-4 cds of live concert music. I will add some suggested shows later as I hope others will to. Something old with a St. Stephen>eleven and Dark Star. Trust me take the LSD and listen to this music fir 3  or 4 hours in a safe enviroment and I asure you that you'll be left with your mouth on the floor in amazement.

There not the best at what they do, There the only ones that do what they do.-Bill Graham. :gd_icon:

Yeah, it took me a little while to warm up to the Dead when I first started hearing them. Now, I can't hardly imagine not being crazy about them. That's cool that you liked Leftover Salmon though. They're a good band. I think they're playing here in Portland tonight. I'm not gonna be able to make it though. Like Chinacat said though, take a hefty dose of LSD, put on a show from the 70's and enjoy. I once turned on a hardcore deathmetal fan to the Dead this way, so maybe it will work for you. I can't see how it couldn't be a good time  :gd_icon: :nut: :gd_icon:

Another suggestion - download disc 2 of 11/11/73 from GDLive.com (it's Dark Star>Eyes of the World>China Doll, and you have to convert from shn to wav format), eat a bunch of acid, and throw on headphones. Either lay down, or take a walk. Enjoy! You will be astounded!!!

Get in a time machine and go back 30+ years and go to a live show. Thats the only way to really get it. Listening to a live show or going to a The Dead show is just not the same at all. Great live music is meant to be experienced live, it is an experience.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
