Is it possible for mycelium to fight off the green mold?
    #1990934 - 10/08/03 06:04 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

I found a few jars with tiny patches of green in between the colonized parts. I seperated them, and now it appears that the white mycelium is growing over the green spots.

Is it possible for mycelium to fight off and then recover from the green mold? Would these cakes then be ok to fruit if that happens?

thanks

Cakes can recover and beat the green, but somtimes
the green can continue to grow inside the cake.
Best to cut your loses, rather than risk contaminating
other cakes.imo

True...it just looks so hopeful.

If you grow it, don't subject your friends to shrooms you aren't willing to eat.

Luckily, I don't trip with any friends aside from my boyfriend.   Yeah, the jars will probably end up in the trash...oh well.

You can cut the green part off with a sterile knife. Be sure to get it all.

You can let it colonize, cut it in half, and case. You'll get a better yield and you'll be able to check for green.

If the patches are tiny, you may be safe.

It depends on the size and kind of contaminant. You have to break the mycelium and see if anything is growing on the inside.

Yeah, I had some of the dreaded green growing on the bottom of one of my cakes when I was fruiting it. I cut the bad part off plus some of the good stuff just to be safe. I dabbed some H202 on it and it recovered nicely. However, the mold spores infected some of my other cakes that weren't doing so well. If your gonna do it, make sure you isolate it from the rest of your cakes.
