Battle of the Green Mold
    #536031 - 01/30/02 02:31 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Well, SWIM has a jar with some green mold developing. There are two points the size of a pinhead, and one the size of a pencil eraser. The pinhead-sized points were a tad bit larger, but the mycelium hit them and they seem to be shrinking. The mycelium has yet to hit the larger mold patch. SWIM was wondering if anyone else has seen/experienced this...

mycelium can overtake mold, however it is impossible to tell the extent of the infection inside the cakes. Even if the mycelium completely smothers the mold i recommend chopping the cake and casing so you can be sure that the mold hasnt partially consumed the inner parts of the cake.

The mold has made a resurgance and I tossed the jar. Over one day the mold went from almost nonexistant to like 60% of the jar. I suspect it was contam inside the cake.

Ive never seen mycelia overrun the green - once i thought it had, but the green was everywhere inside the cake

I think that Mycelium can overrun mold in some cases, but usually the case will play out like this:

when the jar is 50-75% colonized a small bit of green is noticed on uncolonized portion, but is soon overtaken by rhizomorphic mycelium. Mycelium overtakes and for the rest of the colonization no more is seen.

Mold on cakes that were just innoculated is a very bad sign, as the mold will almost certainly have a foothold on the inner pars of your cake.

one time (and only once) i have had a spot of green mold that never got more than the size of a pencil eraser get taken over by mycelium. yes i am sure it was trich and yes i am sure it was overtaken but i have had it plenty of times without such luck..

Really?? Id believe it with other contams. but not the green. As Stamets says - well in similar words - if the green appears your fucked.
I cant see why a nearly colonised cake couldnt overrun it though - but it spreads like wildfire

Actually blue meanie, someone posted a case not too long ago where the extremely rhizomorphic myc. totally overran a spot of green. He had the same veiwpoint as you until he saw it for his own eyes.

Its gotta be rare though, and even if that appears to have happened, it is a neccessity to cut your cakes up and case.

My 2 cents: If you got green mold dump the cakes and improve your technique.

So what it the collective wisdom on the "green death"... is it more typically caused by

A) Poor sterilization of the jars or
2) Poorly prepared syringes?

After a run of good luck in thbeginning of my career, I've been cursed lately.

Elmore

I think the green i had actually came from air exchange - ive read that this is impossible but i narrowed it down to that - tested by syringes - no prob, tested my substrates no problem, tested my innoculation then retaped the jars no problem, tested my innoculation with substituted filters and i got the green when it either dripped in or through basic air exchange.

elmore, id bet that green mold is mostly due to poor sterilization. The oven tek can really cut down on the green though ive noticed.

I'll check the archives for an "oven tek"...One of the things I have been doing lately is letting my jars sit 24 to 48 hours after filling with substrate prior to pressure cooker sterilization. I had read somewhere this was a good idea, letting contaminants "bloom" a little before killing them with the idea being that its easier to kill them after they bloom rather than when they exist in an airborne spore-like state.

Thoughts?

I think I'll sterilize my next batch of jars immediately after assembly and see if I have the same problem.

I appreciate all the feedback folks!

Peace & Out,

Elmore
