Cool link, I think its all about using fresh and clean substrate materials from where you are. For example Stamets uses alder wood chips, but there are other similar species (soft hardwoods) like aspen and birch that can be used.

More about Cattails:
Check out David Blume "Alcohol can be a Gas". He uses cattails growing on waste run off to make ethanol for gas.

This links to a study that confirms cattails bioaccumulate heavy metals including lead, nickel and cadmium. In this instance they are looking at preventing heavy metal runoff into waterways. Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal Waste
