Hey Violet! Loved the GT print, it has been almost a year, so I won't be insulted if you don't remember.
I really like the RGS method you've provided. I would impliment the tek as a part of my psychedelic nursery, but I simply don't have the funds to make the transition to a regiment with all different supplies. Not even two pennies to rub together these days.
My question is, since I use high spawn ratios (usually 1:1, 1:1.5), do you think I would see a benefit using your seed prep and switching to the RGS as spawn for my monotubs over the WBS I currently employ? I would just try it and see for myself, but I didn't want to spend the extra until I inquired.

No I don't think you'd see any benefit, especially with such high spawn ratio already.
I'll repeat here for everyone reading my answer to your question: I am not suggesting using grass seed as "spawn". Doing so doesn't take much advantage of the seed's traits and just costs more money for your nutritional core. If you continue just using grain as spawn for inoptimal use of that grain, just buy a cheap grain. Rather, I'm suggesting using grain as just substrate, nothing to spawn to!
Things I AM recommending grass seed for:- Master inoculant expansion source, regardless of chosen grain for using otherwise. To not do this is factually wasting energy money and time.
- Straight-fruiting, single substrate. It's perfect. Cubensis, Galindoi, Panaeolus, Mexicana and alike grass species love it.
- Agar nutrient source. Same reason.
Things I am NOT suggesting grass seeds for but that they certainly work for:- Lawn maintenance.
- Making a mess. Keep it tidy.
- Looking less suspicious to those with stigma. Face it, you're not feeding birds nor livestock, nor cooking lots of whole-grain bread.
- "Spawn", although hardly worth the cash by comparison

Just mark the goddam text with your mouse and you can read everything... (also desert theme)
-Violet you wrote this after someone asked about consolidation:
Quote:
You do not have to let them consolidate since they're not being "birthed" out. A waiting period before casing and fruiting is my recommendation though. It's my personal policy to wait 3-8 days before casing and putting into the chamber because they won't be ready to fruit so soon anyway.
? So you let them "sit/consolidate" for 3-8 days but is that really necessary before putting into casing+fruiting condition?

I definitely get looks at wally world when I pull up to the register with a shopping cart full of 40 or 50lb bags of WBS. The old greeter dude at the store calls me the bird man. When asked, I tell employees I donate the seed to a wildlife rescue, not that it's any of their damn business.
Bookmarking this one now that I can read it. Good stuff

Excellent write up Violet.
Have you used these methods with any other species besides besides Cubensis?

Ps. Galindoi! Works wonders! In fact it has inspired a coming "advanced truffle tek" to be seen 5-10 months from now… Featuring Ps. Galindoi, Ps. Mexicana "A", and Mexicana "Chicon Nindo"
Would be extremely interested in a spore trade for species that can purportedly fruit on straight-grain for this reason.
Although I will not be able to do this for 3-4 months, I intend to do Panaeolus experiments on straight fert grass seed with "incubated" casing layers. I suspect it will work. I hope someone beats me to it. Please, someone, bet me to that!

Yes well the fact that you say you have not read violets tek, yet felt compelled to read through the response posts and comment on them instead of actually contributing anything on topic makes your entire post seem to be bs.
Anyway I just made a few quart jars into blue oyster masters with rgs. I'm about to make a batch of agar, man the runoff is DARK. Anyway just confirming this is the only nutrition you use in your agar? I have some DME as well, any point in adding some of that, or will the runoff be enough?

I've never added anything to grainwater to make agar other than the agar-agar powder. If you don't like how dark it is so much, you can even dilute it some. Don't spread it too thin though.
Fruiting from agar doesn't count - I add a bit of BRF to the mix for those projects.
I threw my malt away. No use for it, and was problematic to store and keep dry.

I think I saw you post something about this, but I couldn't find it. You ever try timothy grass seed? Its $11 for 40lbs as opposed to $37 for 50lbs of rgs. Although the rgs bag is like double the size.

Testing rye grass seed soak water agar with plant food:
mother plates were PDA and sluggish as all fuck. Here we are 2 days post transfer to soak water agar with plant food:

Update: and 9 day post transfer, 5/3 --I'm sold!
And two more to show other progress--feeling real good about these methods, Violet!

What, this stuff?
 Nah.
Besides, I think you may be misunderstanding something on the price of that stuff… Everywhere I see it's more like $90-150 for 50lb of timothy hay seed

Hmmm, didnt look like that. Could have been the brand timothy, and just regular grass seed. I'll check it out next month when I need some more grain, i already have 100lbs on hand at the moment

I have DME and lme around for making beer so was just making sure before I made and poured a batch that it would be enough without either.
As far as the darkness I don't mind it, I was just surprised at it. I had the glass I was straining it into on the table and my beer on the other side and it was hard to tell the difference in color. (Was drinking some Lucky Bastard Ale]

? So you let them "sit/consolidate" for 3-8 days but is that really necessary before putting into casing+fruiting condition?
It's not necessary, no. Quite helpful tho, if you like the reasons for doing it.
PF Cakes have to be consolidated so that: 1. they are one solid block that won't easily break at removal, which has shrunk just enough to birth from the jar 2. the mycelium will be more prepared to fruit at fruiting time, leading to greater success chance and hopefully higher first-flush yield, since the later flushes have far less capacity
So of course both of those things do not apply to this technique. Consolidation with these cakes does not mean shrinkage, just several days to chew and ready before fruiting engagement.
However some side-benefits of consolidation with PF cakes do indeed apply here: 3. the mycelium is not ready to fruit anyway right at full-colonization, so setting into fruiting early will only engage moisture loss a bit more quickly than is necessary. 4. reduces the likelihood of weaker or 'bunk' product (though unlikely with this technique). A little extra time ensures the first flush to be as potent as it can and will.
Something which I believe may be an additional benefits with waiting to case these type cakes is that the mycelium has come to believe it's out of food "switched out of colonization mode", perhaps making it less likely to fully-colonize the casing layer while in fruiting condition. Many of my cultures fully-colonize the casing anyway before pinning despite being in the FC the whole time but it's not a problem, just a potential benefit pending several factors.
