Cattails ***updated w/pics***

I'm thinking about experimenting with bulk sub of cattails and cpoo. Cattails are eaten by people and are said to have a zucchini taste they are high in fiber and what is harvested is the bottom portion of the plant  (white part 1-12 inches from the bottom not counting the roots)

If hay,straw,newspaper,cardboard can be used I know this can work or should!
These 2 things are readily available to me so I'd like to try spawning some grain to cattails/cpoo anyone think it will work? With straw the stalk is used so would one use only the middle part of the stalk with cattails? I assume the top would not be good although I know nothing about the life cycle of cattails ... anyway this should be fun lol

I chopped a bunch down last year in an effort to reclaim my bait pond from  the damn things while it was dried out from a drought... I'm just going to chp the dryed ones up and use as a straw substitute... I think you could use the whole plant aside from the top b/c you wouldn't want baby cat tail growing out of your sub... if this is even possible if not then you could use the whole thing. dry it out and  chop it up or just layer it in between colonized grain or brf cakes broken up. I got this idea from one of RRs vids ... someone did this with PE in a laundry basket... anyway I plan on tryin both cattais alone and with cpoo

I guess if you split/shredded the stocks it would act a lot like straw.

The tops, on the other hand, would most likely get all 'matted down' and may not work too well but you never know.

Give it a try and let us know how you make out!

They work better then straw when dried and shredded. Down here we can not get straw, so over the years I'v tried many things. The best by far is Banana trash (trunks,leaves,ect), second is corn stalks.
Just cut of the heads , and dry the stalk out and shred them like you would for straw.

update


I spawned 3 cakes 2 of w/I had spawned to WBS ... all these after the first flush and no signs of a good second flush

So I did 2 subs of cow poo and cattails

one with the cattails in long sections and the other with them chopped up... after 2/3 days they are showing great signs and the one with the long strips seems to liking the cattails more. I also used the rest of the pasteurized sub to put my contaminated cakes/seed in potting soil and cpoo with cattails on top. There are signs of mold but with the cold coming up I think the myc will win the battle. It's looking pretty good after only a few days.

Ya the long stripped one looks too crazy to add a casing layer. I'd be very interested in just fruiting it because the long strips are actually another layer. Underneath it is just like the other. Think I'll add a verm/coffee grounds/worm poo layer or something to the smaller one cuz that's pretty much all I got. Maybe some potting soil mixed in. I dunno after reading many say uncased poo wobt fruit evenly and may get dryed out

I wonder If I should let the myc scale all the cattails or just fruit? or do some clipping lol

Also could I run some of this rizo myc out on some cat2cat transfers? lol that'd be sweet to try
