yeah, they are fucking fascist unless you are part of the crowd. Hippies and Hipsters.

edit: well not old hippies, just the 'modern' ones.

Based on personal experience, I've always considered modern hipsters to:
1. Have a "better than you because I'm..." attitude about everything.
2. Be obsessed with anything on the left political spectrum.
3. Feel so concerned about individuality that they do pretty much anything to be different. Most noticably in the form of stereotypic hipster clothing.
4. Badmouth pretty much anyone in the vacinity and start bitching about "tolerence" when the target retaliates.

Hippies were before my time, so I can't really say anything about them, but I've lived near and gone to school with a lot of hipsters. I wouldn't say that they're the same thing, but similar in that they're both youth subcultures and that they share the first three letters.
My friend once said, "Hipsters were those annoying popular kids in high school that want to know what it's like to be unpopular, but are still obsessed with attention."

The hipsters and the hippies ware actually both quite rigidly conformist to their peer group aesthetic.  They are not really rebels.  The homogeneity within the group is far greater than one would normally find in a slice of American culture.

When you define the terms, and speak in vague generalities it seems like you can say whatever you want about people.

What are the essential qualities of each given group?  Nobody needs to answer that, but just realize that pretty much every person you ask is going to have a different response.  People can fall into one category, both, or neither to an infinite level of degrees.  The can be lead into these trends by any number of means, follow them for as long or short as they like, and make up their own rules.

One thing I know for certain is nobody sets out to be a hipster or hippie, outside of confused adolescents and fakers.  Most people have a sense of humor about the whole thing, but people who actually believe these stereotypes are significant when it comes to a person's identity or essential character tend to be insecure or just plain dense.

Outside of fakers?  Lots of people set out to be hippies and hipsters.  They want that credential.  New York City is infested with both.  Are you saying they are all phonies for wanting that?

No, to the practically accurate definition.

There is no practically accurate definition. Why are you the master of defining these words? Why do you get a say in what's the "real" and "accurate" of those words?

I'm trying to say that this is dumb because we're all arguing semantics.

Everyone's a wannabe until they are what they wannabe... like practicing a skill until you've perfected it; although, I still think the best route is always to be true to yourself.

Jack Kerouac believed that Hipsters would be an evolution of Hippies that were basically barefoot sadhus traveling across america on train lines to deliver the good news of everything's okay... guess that one didn't really work out, but I still think there are a lot of similarities.

That's why i voted yes... when I compare the ideals and the vibes i've gotten around certain people who wear the "hipster" fashion to the images, music and movies i've seen of the hippies, I find their approach to life very similar. Outdoors, exploration, freedom.

I'm saying thats not what they all want.  I don't think very many people who you'd identify as some hip breed set out to fit their or your definition of hipster/ie.

Maybe there is some people out there who want to be hip for the sake of being hip, but you'd have to ask them what that means to them to really get at their motivation.  They want to be part of a social scene that is amorphous, complex, and constantly changing.  Maybe it is about the drugs for them and the clothes are just a way to fit in, maybe it is the other way around.

When I say fakers I mean people wearing haloween costumes or undercover cops who dress all hippie in order to blend in at a concert.  People trying to dress up to play a part.

Oh I disagree.  They very much want the label.  They like it.  It's like Yuppy was back in the eighties.  They were proud of it.  Hippies and hipsters are proud to be hippies and hipsters.

Well both groups are probably equally as self-absorbed, and full of shit.  At least hippies are usually nice though, hipsters seem to be stuck up snotty pricks.  Hippie is kind of a blanket term for anyone in the jam band scene though, so it really depends on who you consider a hippie.

It's actually mainly people like you and others on this thread that label people based on the way they dress and the music they like. Aside from a few sorority girls in tie dye Joes Crab Shack shirts, I don't see too many people labeling themselves as "hippies". Everyone else sure is quick to though

Andy uck, I'm not trying to play high and mighty. I do it too. But I try to catch myself when I can
