No way in hell.  They generally aren't doing much good for the world.

IMO it's more that hippies tend to be more likely to harbor under the self-serving illusion that they're helping the world even when they aren't. Most of the original hippies dropped the ideals as they got older, took straight jobs, and pursued consumerist lifestyles with everyone else.

Modern hipster narcissism is more focused on associating oneself with obscure music and fashions and so on. In a way maybe they're being more upfront about their navel-gazing.

I think a big issue there is the reasons they started in the first place. As with every subculture you have the few genuine ones who stand for something more than image, and then a slew of trendies who hop on and off the bus as they tour through different potential identities in their lives. So while a lot of "hippies" dropped the lifestyles as they got older, there are a lot of old fucks who never changed from their beer drinking, acid loving, environmental activist days. I'm sure some genuinely started a. Hippy and changed, but as with all scenes, the majority were just there for music and style from the beginning. Not long term commitment to that sort of lifestyle.

I feel this would probably apply to hipsters too at some level but I don't know for sure since I don't know much about the scene or why it started

There should be a hipster hunting season.

But we can only shoot them with muzzle-loaders, they'd like that.

Meh.  I like how there are so many posters who didn't live in those times but have vivid memories about the hippie movement and then compare it to these hipster people.

Hipsters are the turds in the punchbowl. All they're good for is judging other people to be inferior for their lack of vegetarianism or lack of some other thing they consider "better" and also they are good at betraying people and acting like cowards whenever they're confronted about their turd like behavior and then later talking behind people's backs.

I think it is easier to identify a hippie then a Hipster

I enjoy VERY uncommon and obscure shit.
I love German Bagpiping, marble machines, architecture, and other shit that I could talk at lengths about that not many people could or would. However, I am definitely not a Hipster. You could have three or four 'Hipsterish' things about about you and still not be one. I'm actually going to decide if they are a Hipster AFTER I get to know them

Hippies on the other hand,
if I see tye-dye shirts, weed, dreadlocks and they like organic shit, sorry, you are a hippie. Not that I don't like hippes, but yeah, it is easier to hit the Hippie nail on the head than the Hipster nail, imo.

Hipsters are just people trying to be cool by liking things that nobody else knows about. They think they're original, but they're not.

I voted no.  lol at the no to yes ratio.

They arent modern day hippies. Hipsters are that, hipsters. Hippies and hipsters are different things, hence the different names

What are you talking about 'you all'?  I already ranted about the insignificance of these terms as did others.

Also nobody identifies as a hipster unless they are a confused adolescent or something.

Labels on groups were really prevalent, well, forever.

My Dad told me about his 'groups' in the 50's and 60's... Nothing has changed, just the names and times. People are still being people.

Humans do what they can to attract a mate. Many of these "hipsters" I see are with women much more attractive then most of the women I've dated. Perhaps this is where some of the resentment comes from?

If you have to label a person who has dreads, smokes pot, is all about peace and love, has some reggae or marley related shit, likes fetivals, wears tye-dye---a hippie is the best description when you need to be brief, expressive or want to get your point across fast.

Hipster is more tough to define.
Hippie are pretty easily recognizable.

Well, IMHO...

hippies have been around since the 60's, they smoke weed, eat veggies and acid, and don't wash.

hipsters on the other hand are like hippies with too much money. they buy 20 year old clothes for big $$$, eat shit but pretend to be one with the earth. the first people to stand up whilst saving the whales, but still eat tuna. mobs of contradictions, more money than ethics.

No.  They are diametrically opposed.  Hippies denounced materialism and the hipsters are about nothing else.

Based on personal experience, I've always considered modern hipsters to:
1. Have a "better than you because I'm..." attitude about everything.
2. Be obsessed with anything on the left political spectrum.
3. Feel so concerned about individuality that they do pretty much anything to be different. Most noticably in the form of stereotypic hipster clothing.
4. Badmouth pretty much anyone in the vacinity and start bitching about "tolerence" when the target retaliates.

Hippies were before my time, so I can't really say anything about them, but I've lived near and gone to school with a lot of hipsters. I wouldn't say that they're the same thing, but similar in that they're both youth subcultures and that they share the first three letters.
My friend once said, "Hipsters were those annoying popular kids in high school that want to know what it's like to be unpopular, but are still obsessed with attention."

The hipsters and the hippies ware actually both quite rigidly conformist to their peer group aesthetic.  They are not really rebels.  The homogeneity within the group is far greater than one would normally find in a slice of American culture.
