I'm not saying that humans alone are all that God cares about. But if we are created in his image, the implication is that we are the beings most similar to him, and therefore most beloved by him.

The Bible supports this idea, by the way.

This is nothing but pre-modern anthropocentrism, which is the corollary to a Terracentrism, or the pre-Copernican view that the Earth is at the center of the universe. In fact, Earth is located towards the outer spiral of the Milky Way Galaxy, and it revolves around one of the galaxy's medium sized yellow-white stars. There are some 100 billion stars in our galaxy alone, and an estimated 100 billion galaxies expanding ever more rapidly from the epicenter of the Big Bang. Astronomers have discovered Earth-like planets around distant stars in our galaxy. Instead of being informed by feelings of insignificance, a cosmic perspective groks that the evolutionary process of life has created a 'node' (you) where the very universe has become aware of itself (your self-conscious, reflective awareness). The 'node' of a single human being IS insignificant, but the consciousness (spirit, taken archaically) that we ourselves are Cosmic Consciousness. Essentially we ARE the universe. Our skin does not separate us from the fabric of space-time. Don't let your individual body and mind get in the way of Realization. BTW, God is spirit (consciousness, in modern terms), and if there is an 'image and likeness,' it is going to be ALL forms that the universe has, which is near-infinite in its ever-created varieties. This is what the Vision of the Universal Form was for Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, for example. The Bible has no monopoly on Ultimate Reality. All major religions have something to say about Ultimate Reality, yet words cannot convey the whole-at-once.

My goodness, but don't you love long posts and using as many words as possible to make your arguments. I'm sure that tactic is great for keeping people from adequately responding. Why do't you actually prove to me that the Bible is wrong, not that is has implications which you find to be unpleasant?

Because I ASSURE you there is less than no proof for your lofty ideas about universal spiritual consciousness or whatever idea you happen to be teaching at any given moment. There is a reason why almost no serious religious thinkers are gnostics. There is simply no foundation for the ideas you hold.

I assure you Mark is immersed in foundation, he is practically as buried in foundation as any person could ever become without a full sarcophagus.

your thin bible references pale in comparison like those of a newly reborn midwest revivalist preacher.

this is just about the worst forum for thumping bibles; may as well smack bongo drums.

A foundation of what? Human reason crumbles and falls down on its own. It cannot stand because it is a construction of the fragile, corruptible mind. The Lord declares "I frustrate the intelligence of the intelligent and the wisdom of the wise" for this exact reason.

You can challenge me on any element of my faith, and I will stand firm and offer a defense: a defense that comes not from fallible human thinking, but from a power that is greater. You may say that this is not a religious forum, but I contend that philosophy and religion go hand-in-hand. Call me Aristotle if you will.

Western thought thinks itself to be enlightened just as the Roman Empire and the Greeks before them thought themselves invincible supermen, the rest of the world being populated by backwards savages. But it was those same "barbarians" who overthrew the orderly empires in their attempts to live freely. Be advised not to treat Christianity like a tribe of Visigoths.

so you think the "lord" is speaking through you, and that therefore, what you speak is based upon faith  and not thought - upon faith which is different than thought and better than thought?

I say that faith is just one of the many varieties of mental formations, not more nor less valid than any other variety of thought or sensation.

There are however, drastic difficulties when conversing with someone rationally and they happen to trip out on some tangent that is faith based and therefore "fundamentally unquestionable" - and probably made of straw to have such defense around it.

One wonders - do we call a spade a spade, or shall we pretend to be very British about it and keep decorum around the table - but we are now being taken hostage by a person of faith, and that wont fly anymore.

For you to throw down a gauntlet like you have done in this way is in my eyes very primitive. The term visigoth comes to mind only as you mention it.

Faith is not superior to thought; faith complements, refines, purifies, and uplifts thought. It is a lens through which human reason can be seen in a new light, one which is uncorrupted and has a real connection to ethics and virtue.

For you to deny the spirituality that has been a part of human nature of thousands of years, even in primitive forms, is to contend that you know better than the >99% of people who have lived before you. I am saying little that Lewis and St. Paul and Peter and Aristotle would find objectionable. It is your philosophy that tries to set itself above others in a dangerous way. I come with a foundation of spirituality that dates back to Judaism and tribal religion alike. What do you have? Kant? He's dead and so will you be one day. Then what will your contribution have been? Cynicism? Lovely.

ok, so you have withdrawn your gauntlet and called me a cynic, but you still think that faith is other than thought, and I maintain it is equal and just as fallible.

it has a place in life, past and future for when it does not serve to question:
Faith's unique value is to act as if a thing unquestioned were true.

Spirituality, is not the same as faith, though the idea of it is also thought:
It is thought that has the purpose of understanding the human spirit, and that involves much questioning.

My contributions will stand on their own when they are good, I have no vested interest to be part of a thing that has to be recognized. Some will know and others will not know.

In the meantime you are wrong because you do not question when you should, and you are wrong because you become defensive of something that needs no defense.
& You must make distinctions between things that are wrongly grouped - like faith and spirituality, like us and them.

This response is more of an emotional response to an intellectual writer than anything else. Moreover, there is no proof of the rightness or wrongness of biblical writ, it is a matter of understanding the mentality of the eras in which it was written and finally compiled as a canon. Your statement, "There is a reason why almost no serious religious thinkers are gnostics" is preposterous because you obviously have no idea what the intention of gnostic religion is if you are wed to dogma and doctrine. I may call myself a Gnostic or a Gnostic Christian but that is only my attempt to be as Paul wrote, "all things to all men." It is also my attempt to say that I am NOT a Christian in ANY sense of the term as used in this, our era. The Bible-thumping anti-intellectual parroting of scripture is a burlesque of anything that may actually have arisen in 1st century Judea. I don't want anyone to see me as a proponent of that shallow and stupid set of beliefs that pass for Christianity today. The early Christians were spiritual explorers on the vessel of the Christian mythos, not puerile believers in myth as if it were history. The Ante-Nicean 'fathers' were still exploring the Christian mythos before the "brain police" laid down doctrines that would be maintained by torture and terror. I reject dogma utterly. Theological formulae are all contrivances and belief qua belief is merely programming - the diametrical opposite of any "serious religious thinkers."

The Perennial Philosophy is a philosophy of universal salvation, of the righteous people that the biblical Y'shua is said to have recognized before the machinations of Christian theology created the game rules for salvation and damnation. These opposites were more metaphor than metaphysics among the Jews of Y'shua's day (assuming he was an actual historical person). This statement is your unfounded opinion: "There is simply no foundation for the ideas you hold." I have explored the Bible from the inside out, having assumed the faith stance of orthodoxy, and from the outside in, having assumed a heterodox perspective. You seem to be trapped in the former, without realizing it is a trap. You are still in the dogmatic "Matrix" as it were, and have yet to deconstruct and demythologize your automatic and thus unconscious assumptions about religious myth. Read these two books if you dare. They are both like taking the "Red Pill," but most 'Christians' I've met are still too afraid to challenge their own religious assumptions. These two books can break down the rigidity of indoctrination and allow an understanding of the construction of scriptures on a 'quantum' level. But, unfortunately, you are probably not ready to have your comforting illusions of religion shattered, given the defensive tone of your response. As a believer in dogmas and doctrines as an epistemological way of knowing, you are not in a position to criticize a gnostic way of Knowing. Nevertheless, if you wish to undo the threads of your religious cocoon and fly (think critically), read these books. Otherwise the Orwellian notion, "Freedom is slavery" applies to the unquestioning adherence to dogma. Belief is not faith. Beliefs are a prison, whose bricks are false ideas. Faith opens out to spiritual freedom, it is expansive, formless, open to Ultimate Reality, not shut in by the false ideas of long-dead men.

You know something? I'm beginning to think you aren't worth arguing with. You like to use as many words as possible to discourage anyone from actually taking the time to respond to your arguments. You're the sort of person who would stand before God himself and attempt to argue your way into heaven. If you had even a fraction of an idea about what my faith actually means beyond your close-minded textbook definitions, if you had even the slightest notions about my motives for using psychedelics or the things I have seen and learned, then you would see that you are slowly but surely digging yourself a very neat, very pretty, well-worded intellectual grave.

Because if men were justified by their knowledge or by their words, then congratulations, because you will be all alone in whatever heaven you are imagining. The God I believe in justifies us by faith and by the sacrifice of his son, who took the sins of the world upon him. I will not for a moment say that Peter or Paul, Samuel or Elijah or Joshua were some sort of scholastic holy men who met God because they had some sort of secret wisdom that gnosticism would have us believe. The Bible is a religious text that reveals itself in many layers and shapes, from the literal to the poetic. You can tell me all you want about your academia, but I know you speak falsely, because Paul condemned anyone who taught a "gospel" contrary to the one he taught. Anyone who tried to corrupt Christianity by twisting its meaning was guilty of the worst crime: trying to pass off as true a slander.

The fruits of the Spirit of God are Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. Go and live out those things before you talk of your wisdom.

I can see from reading that that I should actually be speaking with Paul, he has a lot of explaining to do.
you on the other hand, got me wrong 100% about 3 things:
  • Nothing I do is text book.
  • I am already in heaven &
  • half the time it sucks.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

I was actually arguing with Markos, not with you, so disregard my post as it may relate to you.

You are easier to talk with. You at least keep things concise. I have a certain respect for you because you're very down-to-earth. Still, I'm not sure that your philosophy offers real satisfaction in a tangible way. Say what you will about my beliefs; I'm probably happier than anyone else who spends as much time thinking as I do. :tongue2:

I've seen the darkness and I came out smiling because God came with me.

What about Paul? That man did nothing but good for everyone he could. He was a pharisee turned prisoner in chains for Christ, in quite a literal way at that.

His letters have some of the most practical wisdom and compelling arguments for modern Christians. It is Paul who explains why we don't need to be circumcised. It's his arguments that I would cite to defend drug use. He promotes tolerance and virtue. If Acts is to be believed, God specifically chose him because he had such a love of wisdom as a pharisee, and that made him a really effective messenger. On top of everything else, the fact that he became a Christian after persecuting, oppressing, imprisoning, and murdering people is a testament to the fact that anyone can change and do good.

the problem with prisoners and chains is...

well, a fisherman is a much better template

and a farmer or gardener is even better because they take care of nature for a living. (used to anyway)

Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime! "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men."
As for the gardener...the workers were few, and God called for laborers to reap the harvest.

gardeners are not reapers,
they are cultivators

both of those manipulative quotations promise escalations of rank and easy bounty,
on the other hand,
a gardener takes care of the land and the plants... this is much more about wisdom and cultivation of sustainable habits.
