Is this a bad idea?...
    #1935248 -

I've got this 200Gb Maxtor External USB2.0 hard drive. It's housed in a tight fitting aluminum enclosure with no fans or heat sink fins. The enclosure gets "uncomfortable-to-touch" hot any time the drive is powered on. Heat is a hard drive killer.
I've investigated installing little fans into the enclosure but the fans that this would require (small yet high CFM at 5-12VDC) run around $30-$40 and I would need two of them. It would be quite the bitch to install as well (without looking atrocius).
When you open the enclosure you discover it is just an ATA-100 IDE drive attached to a USB2.0 interface with an onboard power supply fed by a wall-wart (12vdc, of course). So here's the proposal:

Forget the enclosure but install the drive inside my roomy case? Running the USB2.0 cable into the case would be no problem but I'm a bit uneasy about piping in a relatively unshielded alternating DC wire pair. I suppose I could power the device with the computer's internal power supply but am uneasy with that considering it's a 250W PS that's already Pushing a HDD, a DVD drive and soon, a Radeon card (Yeah, they require additional power input from the PS!). This means an upgraded PS that would have to fit in my Proprietary case (Dell, hey, buying employer replaced computers at auction and installing Linux makes the submission to Dell seem less ingratiating). Neither solution seems promising... Any input from the peanut gallery?

Okay.... it just occured to me that if I'm gonna stick it in my case it would seem somewhat ridiculous to keep it on the USBus when there are free IDE connections. I would SEEM... In reality I could see that Master/Slave communication might prove slower than IDE/USB. There is still the power issue. I'll check the power usage of all devices attached and see if I'm really in need of a PS upgrade.

There's also the problem that if your running windows on your home machine that it can only recognize up to 137gb (i think) without having a special PCI card. I wouldn't want to risk losing 63gb of free space.

Depends on which windows. windows 98 and up will support it with updates. If you have windows XP, just install XP service pack 1, install Intel application Accelerator, or update your bios. Its easily overcome and not a problem anymore. If it isn't recognized search for an answer at the manufacturer's website.

As for the hard drive if it runs hot like that then maybe its the way its suppose to be.

You will run out of power and have eventual problems if you try to put it all through the internal supply.
This is only something I read, so take it as that only: wrap your unsheilded wire in foil and then electrical tape and it should be fine.

a friend of mine has 2 drives like those, although they are for video editing so they are fire wire, but they get hot as well. so i guess its the way they are made, i wouldnt go messing around and install fans in those things. if you mess it up your warranty is gone blah blah blah and all that crap. so just set it some where with decent ventilation and it should be ok.

Attach ugly heat sinks to them .  They do get hot, but it shouldnt be a problem.
