Installing a second Hard drive
    #2747692 - 05/30/04 09:31 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I have a computer that is running right now (2.53ghz 1 gig ram, windows XP) and I have a second Hard drive that I want to install. I've got the hardware installed, but i'm kind of confused on what to do next. I put in my XP disc and it went through a few steps but i was unsure of the next steps. Can anyone give me some linkage to a helpful site?

right click on my computer, go to manage, click on Disk Management, find the new disk, rightclick and format

should work fine

what else did you want to do?

In addition to what Suffer said, make sure you set the jumpers right on your new HDD. Set it to SLAVE; you will see it where all the connectors are (power [molex], IDE).

If you haven't already, you should set your primary HDD to MASTER.

Generally with XP all you have to do is set the jumper cap to slave as daba said then simply plug it in and you should be up and running.

Make sure your original hard drive is set as primary master. You do this by switching the jumper on the drive. That means you take the drive out of the system.
Set your new drive to slave.

Your CDROM/Burner should be set up as secondary master.

Format the new drive as you like. Use NTFS, not FAT32.

Cause sometimes bios is all screwy with cable select. Master/Slave takes a few extra seconds and is definitive.

You will have to create a partition on the new disk before you can format it. I *think* you can do that in disk management but it's been a while since I used Win to do that.

Now everytime i plug in the drive, when it boots up i get a Hard drive Boot Error, and it tells me to put the boot disk in drive A: .

You'll have to check the boot sequence in the BIOS. You probably have the new HD as master or as first in the boot chain sequence.
