Insomnia is getting too much
    #19315405 - 12/23/13 09:35 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

I work night shifts right now. The way I'm scheduled is very random so I never have a chance to get used to it. Lately I have been very sleep deprived. In the last four days, I slept two hours tops yesterday, and am still up since. I can sleep. It's fucking impossible. No matter what I do my body is getting used to this, but I'm tired, my muscles are sore, I'm bitchy, my heart fucking hurts my BP is definitely up. I don't know what to do. Getting another job is obvious but this one was hard enough. In the last two weeks I have missed at least 8 days of sleep, and that's not divided. I can't even remember anymore. I feel like I'm just fucked. Last night I was hallucinating WELL. Maybe not crazy but for someone who was dead sober it was just not right. It's becoming a pattern. For a while I loved this, because it was essentially eliminating my weed tolerance, but now I just want to sleep on the regular. If I come home and lay down right away, I don't sleep. If I stay up to tire my mind, I become too over tired!

I need some advice from people who are used to working night shifts like this, and how they get to sleep. This is ridiculous. I have a history of insomnia but that was a couple years ago now. It's like I've awakened the murderous whore in my mind who wants me fucking dead. I  feel like I'm constantly on the edge of snapping. Please, for the love of fuck, give me some ideas to put my ass to sleep.

I want to sleep but I want to have a life too. HELP.

Melatonin has helped me in the past, but I tend to become pretty tolerant to it after a while.

I have diphen, it's not working for me. Is melatonin something I could get a the pharmacy without a script?

It's a bad situation to be in. To survive it well requires a lot

1) a major shift in mental paradigms. (You've probably already done this by instinct, the trick now is to feed it with conscious thoughts) Repeat the phrase, "This is life during war time. I am at war." Laugh a little bit, all insane like, soldier, cause you're at motherfucking war, and if you're about to survive this, it's going to take all of those years of training/education that you have to figure out a way to access while in a totally zapped, sleep deprived state.

2) A cocktail of over the counter sleep aids and caffeine. Meltaonin is alright to take, but keep in mind that it's going to leave you drowsy in the morning. There's anihistamines. I suggest pot, but perhaps this isn't a possibility in your situation. Kava Kava tea is great, and if you have a local co-op, you can just buy kava root and brew it in water yourself, making really strong kava tea that'll put you out (for a few hours. Now that your in this state, even the mightiest of sleep aids may only grant you 3-4 hours of sleep. Masturbating often helps, when you wake up in the middle of the night.)

If you ever have a significant period of time off where you can afford to sleep 12 hours, go out and find someone with a script for seroquel. You'll wake up feeling like a champ, hopefully with enough time to job search elsewhere.

You're going to need uppers, and you're going to need the right kind. Black coffee. No sugar = no sugar crash. Make your coffee dark with dark roast beans, and if timing/taste is an issue, make it hours before you plan to drink it, stick it in the fridge, and then pour it over ice and drink it with a straw, bypassing most of your tongue. In this fashion, you can actually put down 6 cups of coffee in less than ten minutes.

I avidly support 5 hour energy. It doesn't really jack me up, but it improves my mental clarity when I'm in a fog. It supposedly does so by giving you toxic levels of B vitamins so 1) drink the whole 5 hour energy slowly. Sip on it for over an hour 2) Some B vitamin complexes wouldn't hurt. In all honesty, I LOVE taking the occasional niacin. Other vitamins should be factored in as well- your body is going through hell and you are losing years off of your life living like this.

Take all of my advice with a grain of salt. I dont even know if your healthy enough for 2 cups of coffee etc. especially since your BP is elevated. Learn to really listen to your body and use your best judgement.

Best of luck to you man. Life during wartime...sometimes you never really come back, even when the war is over

Thanks man

I'll give some of that a try. My GF is walking to the pharmacy for me to look for melatonin since I'm not good to drive right now.

The worst part about this for me is, like you said, it's incredibly unhealthy and I'm a very health conscious individual.

Sometime the universe teaches some tough lessons. Y'know, it doesn't always agree with western society. At this moment it's probably screaming "Dear Jeebus!, make this boy quit and take care of him until he finds different work, so many of you have surplus!"

The good thing is that the universe is probably on your side here. Just be impeccable, and things will fall into place soon for you

I couldn't find Kava Kava anywhere, and melatonin was completely ineffective. If anything, I would describe where it took me, was meditative.

kava is available online then. kava kava tea is sold at almost any grocery store in the yogi brand, but gets pricey like that. Valerian root supplements might be the next approach.

take a super fat bong rip of some heavy indica strain, should knock you out eventually, that or drink yourself to sleep.

I smoke weed all the time, and the amount of alcohol I would be comfortable drinking would only make me more aware.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

That smells like stale ass, . I'm drinking it atm.
My heart vibrates my whole body so i have to do deep breathing for about 5-10 minutes before i settle down and that calms it. I have a trick of counting in a non linear pattern,

1 1000 5 1000 3 1000 4 1000 2 1000, 1 1000 5 1000 3 1000 4 1000 2 1000 over and over then switch to a different pattern when it gets boring, 2 1000 3 1000 1 1000 5 1000 4 1000,  2 1000 3 1000 1 1000 5 1000 4 1000, whatever really. It's hard to keep it up without your thoughts wandering but it puts me out in half an hour if i keep at it.

I'm prescribed Amitriptyline but a lot of people don't like the side effects. They're non addictive though so i'm happy to put up with it for the extra help. They stop me feeling strung out like that shitty insomnia feeling.

Getting to bed earlier when i'm tired instead of staying up late is helping but i don't think that's much good for you.

I was thinking about making a insomnia forum here with info and stuff but i wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not.

The insomnia forum is worth a shot. I'll try your counting thing later. I'm definitely at the strung out phase. Earlier I felt tweeked, like I was on speed or some shit.

It's worth a try. It's sort of meditation i suppose. It breaks up your thought patterns. Don't get stressed if your mind wanders, just get back to it.
Good luck.
