Peace Pilgrim - a simple American woman and her message of goodwill and peace
    #18707424 -

I just found out about this woman tonight. She walked around the country vowing not to stop until mankind had learned the way of peace. She had only one pair of clothes and no money, only relying on the generosity of others for food but she never asked for anything only accepting what was offered. She called herself Peace Pilgrim and preached a message of inner peace. Here is a documentary about her which I really enjoyed http://www.spiritual-happiness.com/nightlotus.html#peacepilgrim

I plan on being a lazy mf until humans learn peace.  I I'm not stopping until it happens. :mad2:  I heard a piece on NPR about a black guy who was very upset at the world and heard about her and so decided to do what she did.  I think he gave up and out in less than a week or two. No body trusted him and he just about starved.

I can imagine this being much harder for a black person to pull off.

The people who need to consider it the most aren't usually the generous sort, so she was preaching to the choir if they were all so generous to her?

Who says they were all so generous? She had many days when she had nothing to eat and nowhere to sleep. Furthermore, let's say she talked to 10 people a day. If nine out of those 10 weren't generous, it wouldn't matter because it would only take one person to give her a meal or a place to sleep. I think you might be underestimating her sincerity. She spoke about once being attacked by a mentally ill teenager whom she took for a walk thinking it would be good for him.

Of course it's always the case that spiritual teachers and peacemakers are going to be preaching to the choir because obviously spiritual people and peace activist types are the ones who are going to be most interested in that kind of thing. It's just unlikely that a bunch of gun toting rednecks are going to show up to the anti-war rally. But that doesn't mean it's useless. Just because you agree with someone's basic message doesn't mean you cant still learn from them. Was Jesus preaching to the choir when he taught in his public ministry? To a degree, yes, but even his closest followers were still deeply challenged by his message.

In conclusion, let me put it this way. Whenever you preach a message, there is always only going to be a small minority of people who are genuinely affected and changed by that message while the majority is unaffected.  Take Tropica orange juice for example. When they put an ad on tv it will be viewed by several different kinds of people. You have your Tropicana faithful, with whom you are just preaching to the choir. Then you have your Flordia Orange Juice loyal, who are going to keep drinking Florida OJ no matter how man ads they see. You have people who like apple juice and couldn't care less about your orange juice ad. But there is a small % of people who are on the fence about what kind of orange juice to drink and those are the people whom you hope to reach with your ad.

As the advertising industry has proven, advertising is extremely effective and worthwhile despite the fact that the majority of people who see your ad are not going to be changed by it.

I believe it is the same with the kind of messages we see in the world. When you meet someone is genuinely concerned with promoting a simple and peaceful lifestyle, it makes you think about that kind of lifestyle. Even if youve heard the message before, you might have not truly thought about how it applies to your life until you meet someone who is living in a completely different way. SHe did speaking engagements all around the country and she spoke often to children. I personally believe that the messages children hear are very important and the fact of the matter is that most of the adults in our society are insane and completely self absorbed. How valuable is it to have your children meet an old woman who had an heir of sanity about her, a quiet simple sanity, in this insane world. A woman who wasn't concerned with accumulating material possessions or social status or looking stlyish or even basic material comforts like a bed and a hot shower. You don't see the value in children getting a chance to meet a role model like this instead of idolizing some millionare basketball star or rock musician?
