Anyone else have a hard time understanding the career mentality?

From my perspective, life is best when it's full of variety, and we don't dwell on any one experience for long...

careers are all about locking ourselves into a specific field, for the sake of long-term security, but even the best careers eventually become a series of repetitive tasks...

...which makes me feel like having a career makes it harder to enjoy life...

...but without a career, a person doesn't have the financial means to afford occasional freedom...

...

Can't help but feel like human beings fucked up their existence.

I believe we did,  i dont look at the Native Amazonians and other tribal people as primitive either- i feel they were closer to whatever purpose man was to live.

I listen to alot of McKenna as well.  Also im not bringing down religion by any means but my people worshipped animal totems similar to native americans before the spanish invaded and took over.  LOL that Avatar movie resonated with me alot lol. but then again always been different as a kid, wandering the woods etc.

If you were a 5o year old scumbag working at mcdonalds like the 5o yo scumbag working at mcdonalds I've seen before, you'd probably have a different opinion.

Society.  In order to have security in the world you need to gain significant experience in a specific field.  If you career hop often, you're pretty much always going to be stuck toiling at the bottom of the ladder.  Less pay, less vacation time, less respect, etc. etc.  Things we've invented to make it appealing to be career-oriented, but also go against what I see as a biological urge to remain nomadic and ever-changing.

Exactly, that's basically what happens to people who never invested in a career.  Could be for various reasons, but a lot of people don't like careers because they're rather do other things (namely find themselves or travel the globe), and then when they come back and try to integrate into society, they have nothing but life experience, and that isn't as appealing as degrees or years of field experience.

We aren't free to experience Life anymore.  A few people can escape this, but most people have no choice but to experience only man-made things for most of their lives, which is likely why a lot of people end up relying on man-made chemicals (speaking pharmaceuticals here) that fuck them up in order to cope with a man-made existence that fucked them up.  Honestly, the older I get, the more painful it is for me to return to nature, and I'm pretty sure I'll eventually get to a point where I stop camping trips and nature walks entirely.  It's so relieving to escape manmade existence for a while, but heartbreaking to come back, and know that this is what life is now, and we'll probably never get back to our roots.  That's an emotion so intense that it makes me physically depressed for a while, almost so bad that it's debilitating.  It's no wonder so many people are messed up these days.  The world is way too complex and far too chaotic for what our instincts can handle.

I was wanderlust and only in my late 20's, but have no career options, just jobs. Eventually you have to choose something, or you will be like the fellow at Mcdonalds.

My dads ex is in her mid 40's, and totally a cool woman, but she works nights, at staples. Wasted potential, and it's a wake up call to people like me (us.)

I've found philosophy to be a black hole that's difficult to crawl out of.

Although society is fucked, it's all we've got, so best make the most of it ASAP.

I'm in the same boat.  I graduate with my masters degree next year and I've got to make some decisions.  Right now I am working with a team that flies all over the world doing first response stuff for disasters.  It's always something new, exciting, tons of travel, ect..


At the same time my girl is home pregnant and im starting to think more about my future family.  I'm only going to be home for 5 days in the month of July, and its tough to think about this being what I do throughout my child's life, all that i will miss..  Before i started a family this was my dream job but I'm getting to the point where I just don't know if variety is the right thing for me after all.  Sometimes i dream about having an easy day to day job so I can have a diverse life outside my career.

Decisions decisions...
