My recent mental problems...result of mushrooms?
    #3522355 - 12/19/04 11:21 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I am 23 years old, and started smoking pot in 7th grade, whenever that was. I smoked very heavy until 3 years ago, and I quit. I started shrooming when I was a senior in high school and shroomed very heavliy as well for a good 2 years. Ive done acid and opium once in a while through the times.

Anyways. I have not shroomed in over a year, havent smoked a puff of pot in 2...drug free for a year.

However, I have noticed some problems as of late, and just realized that they started after my last shroom trip. It was my last one, because I basically lost my mind. I ate 7 dried grams of Copelandia cyans and thought I had commited suicide (literally).

Since then I have had problems being in areas with other people. (Being in class, eating at restaraunts, parties, grocery stores...etc. ) 95% of the time, I will start by my heart rate going super high. I then start sweating. I then feel my neck start pounding. I get so nervous being around these people, I feel like im going to puke, shit and pass out at once. I guess its anxeity as well.. I dont really know what it is. But, all I know its in my head.

Last time I went on the airplane, I almost had to get off. I just put my head in between my legs passed out, woke up and I was dripping with sweat. It wasnt the fact I was flying, it was the fact that there were people around me. Ive flown 4-10 times a year since I was a baby. I never had problems until this past year.

So what Im asking if anyone else has had these problems? What should I do? I dont really want to take any perscription drugs to remedy my situation, but, Im thinking that its gotten to the point that I would be much happier without freaking myself out all the time.

Well I am no doctor, but that sounds like something a shrink (maybe) could take of...probably by dosing you with pills and stuff.

I know that sucks, but its better than freaking out all the time.

I don't know if it has to do somehing with shrooms.
It sounds like social phobia that causes panick attacks in certain situations.
you should see a psychologist/psychiater if this is disturbing your daily life (it sounds like it does). There are other treatments for this than medications.

Agoraphobia, a fear of the marketplace.

I have it also, it seems to be something that some people are born with, this social anxiety. I don't believe shrooms are the cause, but they can definitely be the air added to the fuel. In my opinion, you don't need counseling or drugs. Everyone in the world is constantly misdiagnosed (especially in the U.S.) with ADD, social anxiety, you name it. It's bullshit and these doctors make livings off these silly evaluations of people. People need to learn to face these issues and work through them, a doctors chair and unlimited prescriptions is rarely the answer. I got over this by exposing myself more. Face the fear, feel the anxiety and find a way to get through it.

And I say get some help before too long. At least you are coming out and saying you have a problem, this is extremely important. If you have not already, consulting someone in your real life as opposed to the shroomery would be a good first step to kicking this shit.

you're right, it sounds more like agoraphobia, that's what I ment in the first place. (I just had an exam on all this kinds of stuff but somehow I got confused)

does this apply to you angryshroom?
People with agoraphobia fear crowded, bustling places such as the marketplace or, in our times, the shopping mall. They also fear enclosed spaces such as buses, elevators, or subways. Finally they fear wide open places, such as open fields, particularly when they're alone. In general, people with agoraphobia fear any places where they might have trouble escaping or getting help in case of an emergancy (a panic attack for example)

NB: I'm not giving you a diagnosis here, because I'm not capable of that and not (yet) a professional, but I suggest you have this checked out and see what can be done about it in your case. I'm just saying what I think it could possibly be.

Thanks for the replies guys.

First off, yes, Ive talked to my mom and my girlfriend about it, and they too think I should go get some help. Its really effecting my every-day-life.

Stefan, the first part is true. I cant handle the enclosed areas where people are. Theres too much "energy" boucning off teh walls and hitting me in the head. Plus, I keep thinking about that I am inhaling all their breaths, and IM going to get sick.

However, I find my peace in wide open areas. I feel most comfortable on the beach, by myself. I love going on solo hikes through the redwood forests too. I drive down to the most desolate deserts of Baja every year, just to get away from people.

It could be the fact of socail anxeity sure... I just dont understand why its picked up so fast in the last year. I honestly never had a problem with people all my life...I loved parties, and being social. Now, I cant handle being around them!!!

Your experiancing a type of panic attacks that have been brought to the surface by mushroom abuse ...Ive seen it all my life
Shrooms can and will make you want to have no contact with other humans other than ones that are extremely close in your life ...
You get to where you dont need or want outside human interactions..
If you people think you can do massive amounts of shrooms without any side affects you are sadly mistaken...shrooms can make you very testy and you think you know it all..your temper can flare for the stupidest littlest thing..Ive seen in in MJ bigtime.
I`ve seen it in you Angry ...you can only dip in the well so many times before it starts affecting you in a negative way.
Shrooms arent something you can do for an extended amount of time without sacrificing something somewhere down the line.
I have witnessed this thruout my lifetime//Im no expert but damnit i grew up in the field of dreams here in this cowtown i live in..
I have watched people before consuming and seen what happens to some that consume for extended amounts of time....The ones that keep the consumption high stop answering their phone eventually and withdrawl from society ...I still have a certain amount of anxiety before heading out to take on the world and i think its related to shrooms.

I wish it wasnt this way but it is ...moderation with shrooms isnt the way i wanted to go but thats the way it has to be if your going to keep some sanity.

I reckon you have PTSD and it has lead to other problems - that can happen. I have had PTSD after a bad combo of drugs, and I did a bunch of reading and worked out how to deal with it (I have a psych background and am almost finished my training as a psychologist) and got better. You need to see a psychologist who knows how to treat it. Ring around and find someone who specialises in the PTSD preferably who uses CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy). The other important thing to do is meditate. The therapist will prob tell you that too. Drugs might help also.

psychs can and do surface problems. If you arent "pure", drugs can steer you into a world you that can make you regret living. Im 24 and have been using since I was 13...LSD and shrooms. They have done bad and good. Unfortunatly the old saying, "to good to be true", is in fact a very wise saying.

I have had similar problems for the last couple of years,i am getting much better though as time goes on,i know where the panic stems from and what triggard it as well.
I had been smoking weed heavealy since the eighth grade and when i turned 18 my mom died i continued to use drugs as i slowly spiraled down, for about a little over a year afterwards, then one day i took six wood rose seeds i felt the effects for forteen hours very unpleasent as well, the next couple of days i felt fine then i noticed i would shake when i got high, feel cold wake up in a panic, thought my best friends were out to get me,my heart raced for no reason and seemed to skip beats i thight i had tumors thought my brain was rotting crazy things.

I have not smoked weed in three years i drink a beer or two soom times i triped shrooms this summer it was a good trip, but it took a long time for me to recover i had to relize why i felt this way, it was because i was using these drugs to blur my pain and they have a way of showing you it instead, i still feal the panic some times but i learn to calm my self and know that the fear is an illusion,i still get sudden rapid heart rates some times but i just remain calm because its out of my hands, there is no need to fear what you cannot control as long as you take steps in the right direction along the way,it all takes time, you need to find the source of what is going on and learn how to heal from there.

I think that to answer your question it is important to understand the circumstances of your bad trip. If you flipped out around a lot of people (not even neccesarily BECAUSE of other people) you could easily be making unconscious associations to crowds and that panicky feeling. If this is the case, it sounds to me like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that gives off symptoms of social anxiety.

My bro has PTSD from acid. He ate LSD every day for a week straight and on the last day he had a seizure while tripping. It scared him really bad and really fucked his head up. Recently he's been moderately eating shrooms and he says it's helped him get over the fear. I remember reading about experiments they're doing to see if psilocybin can help tread PTSD and that they've gotten promising results back.

In my opinion, moderate use of psychedelics (especially psilocybin) can be very beneficial to your mental health, but (just like everything else in life) if you take them in excess they WILL fuck you up!
