^^That is terrible advice. (Edit: Was talking to Anon #2, not #3)
You should call the number that is on the hospital bill. Explain to them that you are uninsured and broke because you're an unemployed student (or whatever you are). They will either front the bill to the government or put you on some kind of charity program. Or they will give you a huge discount and you will probably only have to pay closer to the $200 range.
Even though bills only remain in collections for 7 years, it can prevent you from getting an apartment that isn't in a seedy area. That's why even though I make pretty good money now I still live in the ghetto paying cash on my place, because I have some ER medical bills from 2007 that I never paid. I can't afford to send anymore bills to collections anymore though, because now that I have a car in my name they would repo that shit if I defaulted on any payments.
Word of advice, some companies will actually conduct a collections background check on you too when you go to get hired.
My advice to you, is you talk to them and try to get the payment reduced. After the payment is reduced, pay as little as you can (Maybe $15 a month) until you get a job. As long as you are making SOME sort of payment each month, even if it's only $15, they cannot send the bill to collections.
