no, it's not. it's history, and history always repeats itself. because of the type of people that register here, it is almost guaranteed to happen. it isn't about shoddy moderation unless we're talking about people being unable to moderate their own emotions. people are mean, people online exceptionally so as there is the anonymity factor.

even the admin who started our IRC channel and made Ythan promise to keep it up after he left understood why it finally needed to die. your lack of experience in these things is indicative of why you couldn't possibly understand why chat was removed. you've only heard about their happenings, you haven't weathered the storms like the administration has.

History only repeats itself when EVERYONE makes the same mistakes, meaning a fresh approach could solve the problem. Since when is people being mean just a part of chat? Plenty of flaming goes on in the forums and the mods have no problem dealing with that.

I don't know why questions on how the site is run always come down to, "I've been here longer so I know better than you ever possibly could." :rolleyes:

You know, to be quite honest, it got really damn tiring babysitting 15 year olds. Popping into these other chats makes me realize how terrible these new users are and what a liability they are to the website.

I don't even know if you guys could take another $25k hit.

If you guys have to deal with the shit we did on a day-to-day basis, then I can completely see why you got rid of it.

Sitting there with notepad open waiting to copy/paste stuff for an official ban thread just got tiring. Couldn't even really chat anymore.

I can say, with solid conviction, I completely respect all the fellow Ops and thank them for time well spent, considering it's an unpaid volunteer position (as it is on the forums).

Maybe I'm just being old, I don't know, but internet babysitting isn't on my list of priorities right now.

I'm just glad Chatterbox didn't put you guys in any messy situation. In a way, it's for the best.

we definitely could not take another $25k hit, we probably couldn't even take a $5k hit.

so when it comes down to the site's ability to stay online or the dissatisfaction of a few members, we will always choose that the site stay online.

Joie, she's right. I was in IRC when Ripper died and it really shook this community to its foundations.

Hell, one user was talking about how they were killing themselves, how things had started to change since they took x,y,z.. nothing to lose, someone contact a relative, etc etc.

This was early on, even, and sure I may have overreacted but with due cause and I can say that to myself with sincere honesty.

Had this user killed him or herself it would've caused a shitstorm of volleyed fury, and if I were this kid's parents, I'd have sued the shit out of everyone involved for not doing anything. A suit like that wouldn't have won, but it would've likely tapped every penny of MM LLC and shroomery/growery would be gone.

The IRC chat still exists, maybe not on irc.shroomery because shroomery's web server isn't set up to be an IRC server... I think it actually makes more sense to have it hosted on the current network that it is on now, as the people who are kind enough to host #shroomery and #cultivation have multiple servers.

irc.socialirc.com and #shroomery #cultivation.  Again they may not be on shroomery.org but they are the official IRC channels.  We average 60-80 people at any time.

I support this decision. There was too much risk to the site. Real time chat causes a lot of drama not just on the shroomery, but everywhere.

Having said that, I think that a lot of the chat moderators are really awesome people. I never went in chat, but in the forums they were always awesome. I don't think this should reflect on them, and I don't think this was their fault.

Drama can be minimized nooneman, and now that the chatrooms are on a different network they are not a liability or issue for the shroomery's web server.  They might not be making money for shroomery, but they aren't costing money like before either, so it's more of a win-win situation now.
