i gave you completely valid reason. IRC cost this site a ridiculous amount of money, and with complaints about the moderation of chat increasing on a regular basis, we could see it going down the same way. should the site just open its pocket book to you so you can chat with your friends? there are other options for you to be able to do that. the decision was made in regards to what was best for the longevity of the site, and it's forums. the discussions that go on in the moderator and administrator forums are of a sensitive nature, if we wanted everyone to be a part of it, it would have been a public discussion.

If you were going to remove the feature based upon something that happened long before chatterbox was implemented by implement it in the first place? Why completely remove something because of possible future problems rather than addressing the issue? Since I, along with many other members, open my pocketbook to this site I don't see why keeping the chat is a huge problem. How much was chat honestly costing the shroomery, since that was apparently a big factor?

What sensitive nature was there regarding the discussion of whether or not an aspect of the site should be removed? I think the real reason it wasn't open to the public is because the public would favor it and the 19 (or so I forget the number Ythan offered up) people who were against it would have been largely outnumbered.

long before? chatterbox was a replacement for the recently disabled IRC chat feature. do you want to foot the $25,000 bill for a DDoS attack caused by ticked off chat users?


i didn't think so.


this site, within the past 6 months, forked over $25,000 caused by a chat related DDoS. this site makes a very small profit, almost all of which goes back into the site. i think you should keep this in mind.

I hope everyone who has logged into Chatterbox during its inception gives this user-created forum a chance.

Fair warning - I had made a My Little Pony subforum to mess around with functionality, but it's not going any further than that original thread.

The pubic doesn't have to moderate chat or deal with the repercussions from disgruntled members. The poll was open to all moderators and administrators, the people who are actually affected.

i'm almost certain that all the major issues this site has ever had have stemmed from chat. it has been nothing but a sinkhole, both emotionally and financially, for the people who run this site. you're failing to grasp that we saw these same issues arising in the future if chat were to remain in place. THAT is your reason.

The forums are easier to moderate because discussion doesn't take place in real-time, and we already have a team of professional and dedicated moderators in place who are willing to patrol their respective forums. We don't have any trusted staff members who are willing to sit in chat all day and keep it in line.

Well, sucks for us users who hung out in Cultivation chat who generally kept on topic of cultivation and helped countless newbies.  I avoided General chat because it was useless noise just like the Pub or OTD and suspect most if not all drama came from there.

Now back to having to use the forums in place of the chat and having every word indexed by google.

i was sitewide banned from the shroomery by gretchen over a debate about whether or not vermiculite provides minerals to psilocybe cubensis.


the power abuse was rampant, in general and in cultivation.

So you think it was inevitable that another DDoS attack would come from a pissed off chat user and instead of diffusing the situations and selecting better mods it was decided that just getting rid of it entirely would be better?


I still can't understand why addressing the actual problems was impossible. When there's a big problem with a user continually breaking rules on the forum, the user is dealt with not the forum itself.

the problems stemming from chat have been something we HAVE tried to solve for more than the PAST DECADE; from when it was originally implemented to now. many, many avenues have been tried and none of them have been fruitful.
