If you believe there's a Devil, you sorta gotta believe in God since God created the Devil.

Perhaps God and The Devil are just two names for the same thing

Or maybe they are only programs installed by culture which bare no actual resemblance to reality.

in fact, maybe the devil is a metaphor for the destructive nature of the human psyche. The aspect of human functioning that lends itself to primitive and animalistic operation, in defiance of reason and the law of God

If there is a god, there is no evidence that it exists.  None.  Well, the same types of evidence for god are the same for Elvis sightings after his death, Bigfoot, Loch Ness, and gods impregnating virgins.

who said that if there was no god, we'd need to create one?

Either way, God exists, the universe, and everything in it was designed. Some people figure it out looking at DNA, some by thinking, others through near death experiences. Some will convince you otherwise, or use strawman arguements (I to don't believe in a bloke wearing a toga with a beard on a cloud).

But this is not your question. You asked: Is religion real? Religion is real. It's a very real form of mind manipulation, getting people to do as the priests tell them to do for fear of divine retribution.

Good point.  Religion is real.

Is god real?  Probably not, but it's possible that god exists in some form.

It's real when you put faith into whatever it is.

It's also a social structure; antequated but still very socially relevant.

Humans are more social and auccessful as a group.

Find faith in your heart and love in your community, however which way you do it.

Haven't read thread and post isn't directed at anyone.

awesome logic. because if there is no visible proof of God, then clearly there is evidence that there is, and can never be, a god. There is no proof that gravity will continue to hold me to earth in 5 minutes, therefore I wont be on the ground in five mintues

there is such a terrific lack of knowledge in this thread it's laughable. people promoting their nihilistic and empty views on the world, depriving themselves of a real understanding of what it means to create and sustain.

There is no evidence that invisible pink elephants live up your ass.  They might, but until I get some evidence I will not believe.  I use the same logic for God.  You should too.

Is religion real? Sadly, yes.
Is there a God? I hope not.

so what do you believe in? magic "spirits" came out of nowhere, and "POOF!"- the universe is made!?? Or some inexplicably elegant formulation that there was a specific point in time when all the matter consisted in an infitesimly small quanitity of matter. Even analogically quantifying would make it an area of a point on a 2D line. Aka, infinitely small. From all this came the entire quanitity and dimension of the entire universe.

So are you with me?

First, what caused this? What was the 'first cause'? Also, how did such a potential even develop- like when did it come to fruition and what was prior to it?

Okay. Now how do your views accommodate nature and natural phenomena? Do you understand science?

There is a God.

There could not be otherwise.

This is, aside from a specific religion.

You can make assertions about an ontological god, and things that would be necessary to his existence. As far as a religion goes, it would require a search for what you intuitively find truthful (and that is also internally consistent (no contradictions), and externally consistent (i.e., matches nature, science, etc.))

How do you know it needed a catalyst and that it's not just the natural order of things? As long as we're speculating it's fair to argue that the universe works cyclically and that there is no beginning or end because every few billion years or so it contracts and then starts back over with the next big bang. There's actually some objective evidence for this idea and therefor it is already more likely than creationism. Furthermore, what created god? What was prior to god's existence?

You can obviously retort with god existing outside of time and space, but I can say that the membrane that contains our universe is also larger than the dimension of time and exists outside of it.

Your inability to conceive of a beginning that wasn't created by an intelligence comparable to your own is humanly arrogant and laughable.

There must be something that had created anything but in my opinion that is irreverent.  Religion is a belief and beliefs exist.
