Lobster mushrooms suck?
    #17758344 -

Apparently the lobster mushrooms are a choice edible on certain shroomers list, I see stores selling em as a "Gourmet mushroom" but I don't really see it. I picked em plenty of times fresh myself, and I find them to be less then par, I see posts about them being seafood tasting? seriously like wtf they don't taste like that at all... They are full of sand and stuff, when cleaning I personally blow mine out with a compressor to get rid of all the sand and stuff. In the end it's really not worth it and they taste poor. Does anyone actually think these are good or are these just hyped up because of the name?

(My first post btw I'm an avid mushroom picker from MB, where no psilocybin shrooms grow, I love the hunt of picking!)

It sounds like you guys have no frigging clue what they taste like.
Let's name some shitty tasting mushroom Lobster and people will buy it,

It's probably the best mushroom marketing scam ever, just add to the allure why don't you.

You ask for people's opinions then tell them they have no clue what they're talking about.  What was the point of that?

I've seen people confuse Lobster Mushrooms (the red-colored, parasitic fungus Hypomyces lactifluorum as grown on Lactarius and Russula sp.), with Lion's Mane (Hericium sp.), which does have a seafood-like flavor.

I thought they tasted like Lobster. Mine were dried. Rehydrated in a coconut milk reduction. Delicious!

maybe it was the person cooking them that made it taste not so delicious-- something like when the computer fucks up-- its not the mouses fault for not working o.O

people love to blame the equipment and never the user.

I never understood the appeal of Hypomyces lactifluorum.  To me, it is bland and crunchy, even if well cooked.  Maybe I am preparing them wrong, but I pretty much ignore them when I find them.

But I am also unimpressed with Chanterelles, even though I have had them prepared where they were pretty good with a nice texture.  But the flavor of the unseasoned chanterelle just doesn't do it for me.

I really like Boletus edulis, now that's a mushroom.

What!?!?  I worked in the boundary waters in northern Minnesota for one summer.  I pretty much had fish and mushrooms with every meal, most often chanterelles.  They are fantastic imo.  Although with only being able to carry around with use as much as we wanted to portage and carry on our backs we did not cook fancy meals.  Working 12 hours a day outdoors all of our food was very lightly seasoned but still some of the best tasting food i can remember.

I feel exactly the same way as you do. Maybe it's a region thing, or in the case of the lobsters, the host mushroom perhaps. For me the chanterelle doesn't bring much to the table either, however the ones later in the season I find to be a lot better then the early ones. With chanterelles, I think it's all about the texture anyways though which I believe to be Superior to a lot of vegetables let alone mushrooms and if marinated well are fantastic.

On the other hand, I always thought lobster mushrooms to be below par, the texture alone is something that is very hard to get passed, I'm surprised to see so many people are backing them up, which leads me to believe region and or the potential host mushrooms is an extreme key factor.

Or maybe they do just suck... This post has the first evidence otherwise, I'm interested to see what others say still. After all sheep will be sheep, just saying..

I know a lot of people who have wrong opinions... its not surprising that there are wrong opinions about mushrooms considering how many other things in life people insist on having wrong opinions about.

I have considered regional differences as an explanation.  Eastern chanterelles are supposed to be more aromatic and flavorful than the western versions.  And I know Italians that consider the North American boletes inferior in taste to those from Europe.  But there is no accounting for taste.

For sure, region has to play a part of it, that's like a roma tomato grown in north America as apposed to Europe. With the roma tomato that really isn't a debate because they have tested pure strains, logic points to region for sure. But then there's strains. (either way a roma still tastes like a roma and a chanterelle still tastes like a chanterelle, though the flavor may be weaker)

But going back to the lobsters, what's your opinion on the lobster mushrooms then? I mean, there's a big difference between something supposed to taste like lobster/seafood to having absoluty no taste at all.

As for lobster mushrooms, they call them lobsters because they look like actual lobsters, especially the claws. To go out and outright say they taste like actual lobsters is ludicris when they resemble a lobster. It's just good to be true.

Yea, you definitely have to peel them just to get rid of the sand. I use an air compressor though and take a knife to em after.

I just don't care for lobster mushrooms.  They are bland and crunchy and only minimally better than the host Russula.  I always assumed the name was for the lobster red color and nothing more.  Maybe if the host was a Shrimp Russula (Russula xerampelina), but I don't think that even happens.  And those are still crunchy, but at least they taste good.
