What's everyone's view on antabuse?
    #17627755 -

Having a lot of trouble quitting on my own. Figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to take a drug that will prevent me from drinking. I don't know a ton about it besides for that when you drink alcohol, ya get sick...

I have an appointment with my psychiatrist in a few hours and I'm sure he will write me a script if I ask.

I'm just hoping that I won't end up going through the DT's while I'm taking it. I haven't been drinking anywhere near as much as I used to, but I went on a pretty heavy bender this past weekend.

Oh, and me not drinking as much as I used to is still drinking more than the normal person does. Maybe I can get a script of xanax off him too for when I get the shakes and sweats real bad.

I've never tried it.
But dude, I think what you need to do is man up and start telling yourself the withdrawals are something in your own head, and thus something you can beat if you put your mind to it -without just taking another drug. Yes it will suck, let it suck, get through the suck, and then you'll have a really good reason to not go back and make the same mistakes.

I feel like it would be good to be on something that keeps me from drinking. If it doesn't keep me from drinking I'm gonna get super sick when I try which will hopefully keep me away from it more.

I'm just thinking that doing something different is better than doing the same thing and expecting different results. I would check myself into rehab, but I only have a few more months of school and I am done. I really don't want to stall finishing up my semester another year.

I'm just hoping there aren't too many side effects other than when you drink. Anyone on here taken it? I see that one of the side effects is sleepiness. I can handle that okay.

I think beating your mom's sister is wrong.

But seriously, it makes drinking extremely unpleasant. It would probably be effective, if you are disciplined and take it as prescribed. It would be a bad idea if you are willing to drink despite tht effects of Antabuse,

I sure as fuck don't want to drink but my mind wanders towards the drug a lot which results in me thinking it is okay to just have a couple.

Then I wake up 3 days later trying to figure out how it is Monday morning and not Sunday morning.

I'm just hoping antabuse will give me a little extra push to not use. If I still test the waters while taking it I am in for a shitty ass day.

If you drink while taking antabuse, you can experience these symptoms:

Flushing
Nausea
Copious Vomiting
Sweating
Thirst
Throbbing in the Head and Neck
Throbbing Headache
Respiratory Difficulty
Chest Pain
Palpitations
Dyspnea
Hyperventilation
Tachycardia
Hypotension
Syncope
Marked Uneasiness
Weakness
Vertigo
Blurred Vision
Confusion
Those are the "mild" symptoms. Severe reactions can include respiratory depression, cardiovascular collapse, myocardial infarction, acute congestive heart failure, unconsciousness, arrhythmias, convulsions, and death.

I don't know man... That's kind of like putting your life at risk. Especially when your a compulsive drinker...

Do you think you would drink knowing you have a certain amount of time before the acetaldehyde builds ups and you start feeling bad?

I don't know what is gonna happen to me this week, month, year?

Right now I don't want to touch the stuff, but in a few days I will probably want to use. I want to take this so that I will know there is no good feeling to it.

It sounds like the symptoms are the same as after I am coming off a drinking binge. I don't have much guilt for anything that I do when I drink so the blackouts and idiotic things I do aren't really keeping me from using.

It's the side effects of alcohol that makes me want to quit. If I'm gonna get sick as hell from drinking it and never feel the euphoria, I think taking this medicine is a good idea.

Get some sort of plan together, dude.
You obviously have the want.

I will suggest once you start getting clean, contact an admin for a name change so you're no longer IDing yourself as an addict.
I would imagine with these circumstances Wiccan would do it for free. (And if not I will pony up the cash for you, if it'd help)

Good luck and report in with progress and concerns along the way

Your idea about changing the name is important.

Not identifying with the addiction itself, smart.

ANTABUSE CAN HAVE NASTY SIDE EFFECTS IF YOU DRINK ALCOHOL WHILE TAKING IT, LIKE PAINFUL VIOLENT VOMITING.

ASPIRATION PRECAUTIONS ARE IMPORTANT.  YOUR CLOSE FRIENDS & FAMILY SHOULD KNOW IF YOU ARE HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH ETOH AND ARE TRYING TO QUIT USING ANTABUSE.

The vomiting can also cause severe electrolyte depletion/imbalances as well as dehydration having been made worse, essentially losing fluids through drinking the alcohol and then vomiting.

If you pass out after drinking and you have taken Antabuse you could be at serious risk for aspirating on your own vomit and dying.

Xanax not the best stuff because it can put you out, especially if you have had ANYTHING to drink that day or even a couple days previously.

Xanax and alcohol could also cause overdose and/or aspirating on vomit while passed out leading to death.

Ativan is actually extremely useful for someone going through ETOH withdrawal.

ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL IS VERY SERIOUS AND SHOULD BE MEDICALLY MONITORED IN A CLINICAL SETTING THAT IS EQUIPPED TO DEAL WITH SERIOUS MEDICAL EMERGENCIES.

ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL IMPROPERLY MANAGED CAN AND HAS KILLED PEOPLE.

NEVER SLEEP ON YOUR BACK IF YOU HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY WITH SUBSTANCES.  SLEEP ON YOUR SIDE, THAT WAY IF YOU THROW UP YOUR AIRWAY HAS A BETTER CHANCE OF REMAINING CLEAR.

KEEP YOUR AIRWAY CLEAR AND DON'T DIE (PLEASE).

Well, my psychiatrist was afraid to give me antabuse. He said that to be given a serious drug like that I would need to see a drug and alcohol professional on the regular to monitor my use, but he did give me a medicine that is supposed to help with my cravings. I guess it is similar to that of chantix for a smoker.

We'll see how it goes I guess. The only way you could think that the withdrawal is in my head is because it is in my brain.

My GABA is all fucked up from this drug. The shakes are not because I think they are there, but because they actually are there. This really sucks, but I don't think I have to worry about seizures.

I hope not at least. Right around 2 days is when my body starts to realize that something is missing from its system.
